Still working hard to get a playable demo.Wide Open Sky (temporary name). June 8th update. Solo devblogGlenn Melenhorst2025-06-08 | This month has mostly been about trains, cars and finding the fun in my solo game. Developed in godot and leaning into LLM's to help me code.A late MAY 2025 update to my UFO game, built in Godot engine.Glenn Melenhorst2025-05-22 | Still fun. I got downvoted to oblivion on reddit, and some speculate it was because people thought I was generating AI art - which I am not. I am, however leaning into LLM's to help me code which I have made public from the start, because if there is one thing I am not, it's a coder. :)A MAY 2025 update to my UFO game, built in Godot engine.Glenn Melenhorst2025-05-05 | An update to my UFO game in Godot engine. I'm still having a ball :)An update to my UFO game in Godot engine.Glenn Melenhorst2025-04-12 | An update to my UFO game in Godot engine. It's slow progress but I'm adding new things all the time. I'm having a ball to be honest :)UFO game small update :)Glenn Melenhorst2025-03-25 | Added a few updates based on some feedback I recieved.Big open Sky or UFOh! WIP (Dont have a name as yet)Glenn Melenhorst2025-03-23 | This is my first ever game, and the first time I've tried Godot.
My scripting is terrible, so I have been leaning into Claude and Mistral AI to help me. I have learned AO much about coding watching them make code and also make mistakes. It's been a journey to find what's wrong when the AI doesn't know and you barely speak code. Anyway, as an artist, I have found it super useful.Generating artwork that isnt mine.Glenn Melenhorst2025-02-01 | Just seeing what out there and how it can be used. I like to learn this stuff to know what's coming - you know? It's nothing I want to keep or use for anything. Although many will say 'it's junk' I'm still intereted in your thoughts. An update! Learning digital puppetry in Unreal Engine 5.4Glenn Melenhorst2024-12-10 | I have added textures, extra canned animation cycles, control with Xbox controller, legs and walk cycles, a more cmplex bone system, springs on the nose..... generally lots more learning. How its going.... Learning digital puppetry in Unreal Engine 5.4Glenn Melenhorst2024-12-08 | How my tests are going. Remember I have no real idea what I'm doing :) Using Live Link Face and Blender.celebrationGlenn Melenhorst2024-11-30 | ...Live Link Face in Unreal Engine 5.4Glenn Melenhorst2024-11-30 | This also assumes you have loaded the apple ARKit plugin under edit/plugins. Oops! I forgot to mention that one.
This is for me to help remember what I learned using Live Link Face to control a digital puppet in unreal Engine. I thought I'd doccument as I go so I can refer to this later rather than go back through all of the various youtube links and pages to re-learn.
Next I will learn how to move the puppet around using my Meta Quest VR controllers and do a lot of tidy up.
I'm very new to it all so aplologies if I have done something stupid :)Playing with Tiny GladeGlenn Melenhorst2024-10-30 | ...Harper Woo trailer created with Midjourney and Luma Dream MachineGlenn Melenhorst2024-07-01 | A faux trailer for a screenplay I wrote a few years back. Most of these images (99%) are AI generated. I think its an indicator of where we are headed with AI filmaking.I finished a novel! A kinetic sculpture.Glenn Melenhorst2023-12-21 | FINALLY! After so long playing around in blender and trying this and that I'm calling this piece done. Lots of bearings and cams and fiddling with tolerances and I think it's turned out okay. :)Frame accurate animation on an Arduino mega.Glenn Melenhorst2023-11-04 | I used Blender to animate the bones and my own code on the Arduino to run it all. This is a string out of some of my work. Most of it just for fun, and some for illustrated or interactive books I have published. The Thief boat automata - assembly.Glenn Melenhorst2023-03-20 | A long-ish video documenting the assembly of the thief. A boat automata I designed.Boat Automata - WIP 07-ishGlenn Melenhorst2023-03-05 | I built sturdier cams to support the boat, added a sun rethought many of the components and how they worked. Made it so that most of the sculpture clicks together, relying less heavily on the glue. General improvements. More to come I guess. I need to borrow a resin printer too :)Boat automata update.Glenn Melenhorst2023-03-01 | This shows a rethink of the mechanism for the seagull. A simpler design with less friction. Also, I'm starting to work out the sailor's motion. The counterweight barely (doesn't) fit inside the boat so I'll need to get in and adjust the hull.Boat automata updateGlenn Melenhorst2023-02-26 | A small update on modifications to my boat automata! :)Boat automata prototypeGlenn Melenhorst2023-02-24 | Nearly complete print of my boat automataWIP 03Glenn Melenhorst2023-02-18 | I still have a way to go but these test prints really help.Boat WIP 2Glenn Melenhorst2023-02-15 | Further refinement. More bearings. more fiddle. More things need gluing. I hope to have a full printed prototype to share soon.Boat Automata Wip 001Glenn Melenhorst2023-02-07 | Where I am at with the 3D printing of my AutomataThe one that got away WIP #2Glenn Melenhorst2022-11-23 | Working on the model of the boat and also the mechanics. Staring to test print little bits as I go to test the ideas. The stolen fishGlenn Melenhorst2022-11-21 | This is a rough idea for an automaton I'd like to make. Needs a LOT of refinement before I'm done. :)Bird Automata WIP09Glenn Melenhorst2022-05-26 | ...Bird Automata WIP08Glenn Melenhorst2022-05-11 | Update to my automata project.Bird Automata WIP07. New tools and refinements.Glenn Melenhorst2022-04-18 | There's still a LONG way to go but this week I rebuilt the wooden frame (bad but better than the old one) and reworked the mechanics of the head. Lots of simple other updates happened as well.Bird Automata WIP06Glenn Melenhorst2022-04-13 | Update to my Bird automata project.Bird Automata WIP05Glenn Melenhorst2022-04-08 | The beak motion was larger than I figured. The up-down motion was quite large on the wheel down below which would have made very steep peaks and valleys on the wheel. So, I have been thinking about how to change a big string move into a smaller one. That's why the little off-centre see-saw is now in the body. I think it will work.. printing tonight to see!Bird Automata WIP03aGlenn Melenhorst2022-04-07 | An extraordinarily rough prototype of my base. Super janky but shows the workings in theory.Bird Automata WIP04Glenn Melenhorst2022-04-07 | Just an update to my fiddling with a Cockatiel automata.Bird Automata WIP03Glenn Melenhorst2022-03-28 | Update to my try at building a bird automaton. I have been printing as I go, updating the things that haven't worked and learning a lot! Still, a long way to go.Bird Automata WIP02Glenn Melenhorst2022-03-23 | WIP number 2 of my bird automaton. Designing it in Blender and am not sure if it's going to work. I have decided to try my hand at a little woodwork for the base as frankly, 3d printing a case and everything would take forever.
I took a screengrab of the animation curves for the body and mapped that image onto a circle in order to see the shape I need to make for the cams. in the video, you can see the body motion reflected in the line. The cam's shape stores the bird's movement like a record and pulls the threads to affect the motion... that's the idea at least :)
I will probably never make this, just noodling around and seeing what might be possible.
