Kings and Generals' historical animated documentary series covering the Pacific War continues with a video on the Papua campaign of 1942-1943 as the allies score their first victory headlined by Australia. After Midway, Japan’s momentum in the Pacific was shaken—but not broken. Determined to isolate Australia and seize Port Moresby, Japanese commanders launched a brutal overland offensive through the jungles and mountains of Papua New Guinea. Standing in their way were exhausted, undersupplied Australian troops fighting along the Kokoda Track, at Milne Bay, Buna, Gona, Sanananda, and Wau. This full-length documentary follows the Papua Campaign from Japan’s cancelled Operation FS to the desperate battles that turned the tide in the Southwest Pacific. We cover MacArthur and Blamey’s defense of New Guinea, the formation of Maroubra Force, the brutal fighting at Kokoda and Isurava, the Australian victory at Milne Bay—one of Japan’s first major land defeats of World War II—and the costly Allied assaults against the fortified Japanese beachheads at Buna-Gona. Outnumbered, sick, starving, and fighting in some of the worst terrain of the war, both sides endured a campaign of attrition that decided the fate of Port Moresby and opened the road to future Allied offensives against Lae, Salamaua, and Rabaul.
