April 27 2011 Alabama Tornadoes - Radar and Tornado Tracking EquusStorm 2011-07-04 | Using images from http://mesonet.agron.iastate.edu/ and data from NWS survey pages, I have compiled a radar loop from the April 27 2011 Alabama tornado outbreak and labelled the image wherever/whenever a tornado was down. Note that the times and locations are not meant to be precise, just a general idea of where and when the tornado occurred. The primary purpose is to show which cell produced which tornado and which tornadoes were down at the same time. PLEASE NOTE! The Marshall county MCS that dropped nearly a dozen tornadoes in the morning round is only labelled as a complex, since the series of tornadoes was too complicated to track precisely. I will probably go back later and fill them in anyway. I have also excluded a tornado from the noon round in Marshall county because HUN has not yet defined its precise time of occurrence. ALSO, only a few select tornadoes from MS and GA are labelled! Therefore, do not use this video to track tornadoes in any other state until I update this, as I will probably go back and fill the rest in later. The survey data I used is from the event pages on the Huntsville, Birmingham, Jackson, Memphis, and Peachtree City NWS offices' websites. Also, data is considered preliminary and is subject to change.
NS 75G and NS A79 Simultaneously in Parrish, AL EquusStorm 2024-09-09 | Finishing off a day of railfanning with @freebrickproductions in the Birmingham, AL area in Parrish on September 7 2024 in a very interesting way; the delay from a broken brake hose and the subsequent repair led to both trains (NS 75G coal train on the right we were initially chasing and NS A79/former 329 on the left) arriving nearly simultaneously. Carbon Hill Tornado 11/10/02 WBMA Coverage EquusStorm 2021-03-28 | There is a shorter clip of this tornado coverage on one of 33/40's DVD specials, but this several minute longer version used to be on the ABC 33/40 website over a decade ago and I haven't seen the 16 minute version uploaded anywhere else yet.This F3 tornado killed three people in Walker County and caused major damage across Carbon Hill, destroying the newly rebuilt high school that had burned earlier the same year. Coverage of the second F3 following this tornado about an hour later a little to the southeast that killed seven in Saragossa is already uploaded elsewhere on YT.Very long night; lived one mile from this tornado at the time
Gulf Shores AL Small Waterspout Funnel 09/10/19 EquusStorm 2019-09-12 | From Mo's Landing between Gulf Shores and Fort Morgan, AL, looking just a little offshore into the Gulf of Mexico over Little Lagoon. Saw at least two from developing cumulus just offshore but the first was too low a contrast to be filmed successfully. Neither ever extended their condensation funnel more than a third of the way to the water surface but I still looooove to see these when down here on the Gulf. Especially the ones with decent contrast.
February 23 2019 Wall Cloud and Inflow Wind Saragossa AL EquusStorm 2019-02-23 | Tiny supercell ahead of the main Moderate Risk event rapidly ramped up as the meso moved less than a mile to my southeast. Apparently Saragossa is a severe weather hotspot. This video did not capture much, but there was high speed rotating scud, a low ragged strongly rotating wall cloud, and fairly strong inflow to this wall cloud. No damage was reported from this storm so, while brief touchdowns in extremely rural areas where no damage was ever documented can certainly happen, the storm did not produce any confirmed tornadoes. Of course, later that day, the storm that produced the Columbus EF3 passed through the western edge of Walker County and DID drop a brief tornado.Sorry nothing could be seen through all the trees. Not gonna get on the road and follow it being this close to a dangerous storm in heavy rain with trees blocking visibility everywhere.
June 22 2018 Saragossa AL Brief Tornado EquusStorm 2018-06-23 | Rapidly rotating and rising scud on the north side of a weakly rotating decaying shower at ~5:43pm. Minor tree damage occurred just down the road. There is indication of a weak touchdown but I cannot prove this. Right before the second clip, there was small tree debris being lofted into the lowering, but I did not have my camera going and had to scramble for it; I was obviously not expecting anything interesting to come of this lol. I will gladly allow parts of the video to be used for spotter training purposes, regardless of what this actually was, which we might never truthfully know; just message me and ask.There was a Slight Risk in place, and parameters were noted to be favorable for a few isolated tornadoes. Shear was actually decent for June on the south side of a passing storm system. At least one tornado has been confirmed with injuries in Vinemont an hour or so after this, so conditions were certainly not hostile for such things to happen even here.Having seen my first tornado one year and one day before this, my luck with stumbling across weird Alabama vortices in June is apparently alarmingly good.
TS Cindy Summerdale Alabama Brief Tornado June 21 2017 EquusStorm 2017-07-22 | The actual brief wispy rope that initially touched the ground at the very beginning isn't visible, just the funnel above in the first few seconds of the video, but this is the extremely brief tornado just south of Summerdale, AL, spawned by Tropical Storm Cindy, on June 21st. Radar evidence (very strong rotation and multiple tornado warnings) and spotter reports, along with someone else's video taken from a much better angle, have led to enough evidence that this tornado is listed on the official AL database for 2017, though little if any damage occurred.It is the first tornado I have ever seen. It was caught only because I happened to be staying down south at the time and happened to notice the warning, ending up seeing multiple rotations and this brief touchdown. I can't be 100% certain it was all the way to the ground even as a trained spotter, but the brief quickly rotating smokelike rope was extremely close to the ground. June 12 2012 Jasper, AL Scud EquusStorm 2015-01-17 | This is the kind of scud that often gets reported as a tornado. It's a seemingly amorphous little appendage of cloud in a fairly benign non-severe summer storm, in this case, and there does seem to be quite a bit of general lateral motion in the scud - but not the strong, persistent rotation indicative of a tornado. Severe weather in Alabama was pretty absent this day, but a powerful MCS did cause significant wind damage through the area the previous day.

April 27 2011 On-Air Call to 33-40 by Joseph Knight EquusStorm 2012-01-27 | "The entire city of Hackleburg has been... pretty much destruction." This call detailed the grim fate of Hackleburg for the world to hear. I imagine the feeling that many felt upon hearing this news was similar to that from the Guin tornado in 1974. This was at about 930pm. James Spann also talked to Gov. Bentley a few minutes after this call.The awful quality is due to me recording this off a VHS tape using a digital camera, but the audio is, of course, the important thing here. I have the rest of the day's coverage, including the early morning round of storms, and I will upload the segments that aren't already up once I get my VHS-to-DVD converter working. Unfortunately I have no idea when that might be. But yes, eventually.

Walker County Tornado Sirens, April 27 2011 EquusStorm 2011-05-17 | Tornado sirens from April 27 2011, going off as the Cordova/Sipsey EF-4 was passing to our south. The storm in the video is the supercell that produced the violent tornado but the rotation itself was not visible through the heavy rain, as we were on the north end of the cell.

The tornado itself passed several miles to the south, but we got a brief shower from the storm as it passed through, before the power went out as the lines from Gorgas were destroyed.
Storm That Produced Hubbertville EF-3 EquusStorm 2011-05-17 | From my house, April 27th 2011. This is the supercell that produced the Hubbertville, AL EF-3 tornado less than half an hour before this video was taken. The storm was passing across Nauvoo and into Winston County a few miles to our north as this was taken. Flanking line features can be seen in the video, along with a view of the supercell from beneath the anvil. A nearby CG bolt drove us all inside for a bit as the circulation passed a few miles to our north!
Storm That Produced Cullman EF-4 EquusStorm 2011-05-17 | Taken from my front porch, just north of Jasper in Walker County AL, April 27th 2011. This is the base of the tornado-warned developing supercell that went on to produce the devastating Cullman tornado shortly after this was taken.(Simona at 0:13 - god I miss my girls so much)
