Great Art Doesnt Happen By Accident Best Art Tips Erika Lancaster Artist 2025-07-03 | 🎶 Great art doesn’t happen accidentally- just like great music doesn’t. 🎨Think about your favorite song for a moment.Every note, melody, and rhythm was intentionally chosen and placed.A great composer leads the listener on a journey, building tension, offering release, guiding them from beginning to end.As visual artists, we do the same with our drawings and paintings.We just use different building blocks.These building blocks are called the Elements of Art, and they are necessary to create any kind of art, from fully abstract pieces, to impressionistic landscapes, to realistic still life, to human and animal portraits.They are:➡️ Line➡️ Shape➡️ Color➡️ Texture➡️ Form➡️ Value➡️ SpaceThe more you understand these elements and how they work together, the more intentionally and effectively you can design your compositions, leading your viewer’s eye, evoking emotion, and communicating your message clearly.Here are 3 ways to start thinking like a visual composer:🎯 Don’t just draw what you see. Decide what you want to say or the mood you want to create, then use the elements to say it. All elements have a psychological impact on the viewer. Use them intentionally.👁️ Establish a focal point and bring in visual hierarchy as you're deciding placements, amount of detail and contrast. This will help you avoid muddy and undesired colors.✔️ Protect your highlights and use the bright paper to help you create light value areas. White is not necessary!✔️ Activate pigment with water for smooth, painterly effects. Balance these painterly effects with sketchier textures that this medium also allows.✔️ Work in layers and allow each to dry completely before applying more color on top. You can damage your paper by applying color when it is still damp.✔️ Build up from lights to darks, using heavier coverage only where needed. Watercolor Pencil Rose Shading Erika Lancaster Artist 2025-04-28 | When it comes to shading with color, there are three main mixing strategies you can use: Analogous Colors, Complementary Colors, and Neutrals. 🎨In this time lapse, I’m using Analogous Colors—yellow, orange, and red—to shade my watercolor pencil rose.🖌️Analogous colors sit next to each other on the color wheel, so they blend naturally while keeping your colors fresh, clean, and vibrant.If you want to darken an area without muting your colors, analogous colors are a great choice! 🌟By contrast, shading with Complementary Colors (opposites on the color wheel) or Neutrals (grays, browns, or black) will mute the original color while darkening it.Complementary Colors create rich, muted, more complex shadows.Neutrals offer a more direct way to darken — leading to strong contrast and dramatic depth, but at the cost of losing some color intensity.Each method gives a different feeling—choose the one that fits the mood you want to create!Which do you find yourself using the most? 🎨🌹#watercolorpencil #watercolourpencilpainting
