Crew-6 reentry as seen from Tampa (Sep. 2023)

HollisPictures 2023-09-04 | A lot of the video is out of focus. I also had to brighten the video some to see it better. It was a lot brighter in person.

This was the Crew-6 mission, on a Dragon capsule, returning to Earth from the International Space Station. The trajectory was from the southwest to the northeast, with reentry over the East Pacific, crossing Mexico, the Gulf of Mexico and Florida, before splashdown at 12:17am EDT off Jacksonville in the Atlantic.

I would recommend that people in an area that can see reentries try to catch one. It really is neat to see. This was the first I have seen of a Dragon capsule.

Idalia flooding on Dana Shores Drive in Tampa (2023)

HollisPictures 2023-09-01 | Much of Dana Shores drive was flooded in Hurricane Idalia. From around 6am until late in the afternoon, the road was flooded. I heard that at least one car had issues in the flood waters when driving out, perhaps driving into a ditch. For much of the day police blocked the road until the waters receded enough.

I had evacuated Pelican Island early in the morning after the worst wind conditions, but before the surge got high enough so that the front entrance to Pelican Island would flood. I didn't want to risk my car getting flooded in case it got that high at my house. I first stayed near the entrance to Pelican Island. Once the water started climbing there, I drove to Rocky Point Golf Course a little down the road and stayed there until the water came down again.

Hummingbirds in Tennessee

Four parts water and one part sugar is all you need to put in the hummingbird feeder. My aunt puts four cups of water and one cup of sugar in the taller feeder each day. I never had luck in Tampa, Florida doing this, but she has over the years. (I used food you buy too) From just before sunrise, to just after sunset, they are constantly eating from it all day long. Wasps and bees are also after it, so that can be an issue too. (my problem was ants when I tried to feed them in Tampa years ago) I saw up to 8 or 9 hummingbirds at once, but it's hard to count because they dart around so much. It's likely that there are many times that, as I assume the same ones are not eating all day long. She used to have more when the feeder was in a different location in her yard.

Did you know a hummingbird eats with its tongue? I didn't. A video here from the University of Connecticut shows it in slow motion:

I saw a little bit of white at times come out of its beak and looked up what it was. At one point in my video I show a clip, including frame by frame, of an instance where a hummingbird sticks its tongue out.

Interesting boat in a canal in Tampa

HollisPictures 2022-12-11 | This drove by window. On water. Naturally, I grabbed my camera. I had never heard about it before. It's from a company called JetCar USA. It never went fast as you're not supposed to go fast in the canal next to my house. But from looking at other YouTube videos, it can go pretty fast.

I forgot to upload this sooner. This was filmed on October 8th, 2022 north of Rocky Point in Tampa, Florida.

Starlink launch as seen from Tampa (May 6th, 2022)

HollisPictures 2022-05-06 | Another spectacular view from where we are in Tampa, about a mile west of Tampa International Airport, looking across the state at the SpaceX mission launching more Starlink internet satellites from Kennedy Space Center. It initially looked like a red dot. Once it was far enough away, the sun shining provided a spectacular view as Stage 2 continued on and Stage 1 fell back to Earth. Stage 1 eventually landed successfully on the drone ship.

When there are launches shortly before sunrise, while it is still dark, but the sun is shining where the rocket is, you can get spectacular views like this.

Filmed on May 6th, 2022. The launch was at 5:42am EDT. Sunrise in Tampa where I am was at 6:47am EDT.

This wasn't the only SpaceX activity that could be seen overnight. At 12:43am EDT four astronauts splashed down west of central Florida after having come back from the International Space Station. I didn't realize they were coming back west of me, I thought they were likely going to land south of the Florida panhandle. So I didn't try to see if I could see it.

I saw a post on social media of pictures from the Gulf coastline of Pinellas County that showed the return. I also saw a picture from someone around the area, possibly around Tampa, that showed it just above some trees. But since it was low on the horizon, it wouldn't take much to block someone's view.

I did however, because I am just west of Tampa International Airport, hear a helicopter brining the astronauts to Tampa International Airport. At about 3:18am EDT I heard the helicopter carrying the astronauts come over my house. (going over 100mph) From flight information online, the helicopter carrying the astronauts was a Eurocopter EC225 Super Puma (tail number N554AC).

A second helicopter that was circling the area around where they landed flew over me at about 3:54am EDT. Tracking for that helicopter:

The astronauts, at least the American ones, flew back to Houston on a Gulfstream V. The tracking for that plane was here:

It had been scheduled to take off at 4:29am EDT, but took off around 5:02am EDT heading north on the easternmost N-S runway. (so I didn't see it)

At 4:43am the helicopter that had carried the astronauts flew back over my house to go back to the ship. At 5:53am EDT it flew over my house again and went back to the airport. I don't know if all four astronauts were on the first helicopter. There must have been at least three because the NASA plane bound for Houston had already taken off. There was a European astronaut as well that was to eventually return to Europe. I don't know if they were to do that from Houston or Tampa. So it's possible they were on the second helicopter. Or maybe they were flying some other crew to the airport from the ship. I don't know.

2018 Tampa Riverwalk Holiday Lighted Boat Parade

I viewed the boat parade from various locations along the Riverwalk, starting at Curtis Hixon Park. Since the bridges were not raised for the large boats to come up the Hillsborough River, only smaller boats came by Curtis Hixon Park. However, viewing the smaller boats along the river is the best way to see the smaller boats. After viewing the smaller boats I walked to the Tampa Convention Center to see the larger boats, as well as all the small boats that had arrived by then.

The video starts by me crossing the Kennedy Boulevard bridge. Views of the moon around downtown Tampa appear in earlier parts of the video. I walked around Curtis Hixon Park taking video before the boat parade started.

2017 Tampa Riverwalk Holiday Lighted Boat Parade

I viewed the boat parade from two different locations. The first location is at Curtis Hixon Park. Since the bridges were not raised for the large boats to come up the Hillsborough River, only smaller boats came by Curtis Hixon Park. However, viewing the smaller boats along the river is the best way to see the smaller boats. After viewing the smaller boats I walked to the Tampa Convention Center to see the larger boats, as well as all the small boats that had arrived by then.

There was an impressive turnout of boats for the parade. Looking back to an archived page for the boat parade for that year, it said they had nearly 100 boats signed up before the registration deadline. They likely had even more than that since a lot of boats probably didn't register.

SpaceX/NASA Crew-2 mission as seen from Tampa (April 23rd, 2021)

HollisPictures 2021-04-23 | A spectacular view from where we are in Tampa looking across the state at SpaceX and NASA's Crew-2 mission sending four astronauts to the International Space Station. I included a little bit of what it looked like at first and then pick back up when it started to get really spectacular. I didn't expect it to look quite this good, so I didn't bother using a tripod. I wish I had.

Peacock in Pelican Island on May 14th, 2020 in Tampa, FL

Filmed over two hours on the morning of May 14th, 2020 in the Pelican Island neighborhood in Tampa, Florida. I followed the peacock as it traveled from the north side of our neighborhood to the east side. This peacock has lived in the surrounding area for over a year.

The peacock was probably roosting in the tree at the start of the video. It was heard in that area before daylight.

The peacock fully extended its feathers quite a few times in the video. Video times are below for some of the highlights.

Peacock in Pelican Island on May 13th, 2020 in Tampa, FL

HollisPictures 2020-05-13 | Filmed over two hours on the morning of May 13th, 2020 in the Pelican Island neighborhood in Tampa, Florida. I followed the peacock as it traveled from the east side of our neighborhood to the west side. The peacock, and a peahen which I didn't see on this day, have lived in the surrounding area for over a year.

The peacock only fully extended its feathers once near the start of the video. (from 1:27 to 3:00)

On May 14th the peacock extended its feathers many times and flew out of a tree as well. You can view that video here:

Regina Blue Walking Iris blooms opening in Florida (Neomarica caerulea)

HollisPictures 2019-04-25 | Filmed in Tampa, Florida on April 25th, 2019.

The first part of the video is of the Regina Blue Walking Irises. (Neomarica caerulea) You can see two of the flowers opening in real time (at 0:21 and 1:24 in video) which I have never tried to capture before. The last ones opened just after 10 a.m. This season they have been blooming occasionally since April 1st. We had 19 on this day. On another we had about two dozen between two plants. Sometimes we go three or four days and haven't got any.

The smaller plants originally came from the parent plant. One of the smaller plants hasn't had any blooms yet. I think it was planted in too much sun and we eventually moved it to where you see in the video, which still might have too much sun.

The second part of the video (3:30) is of dragon boats practicing because it happened 15 minutes later. The dragon boats were practicing for the 2019 Tampa Bay International Dragon Boat Festival on April 27th, 2019.

Green anole lizard changes from green to brown

HollisPictures 2017-09-21 | When I zoomed out and then back in, I didn't expect to find a different color lizard. I had no idea these lizards could do this, like a chameleon. I've taken lots of pictures of green lizards before. I guess now I'll have to follow and film them more closely.

2017 Solar Eclipse as seen from Tampa (Slideshow)

HollisPictures 2017-08-22 | I constructed various solar eclipse viewers, all of which worked. Binoculars also worked very well, though you have to be careful not to use them too long to project onto a piece of paper or they might be damaged. A neighbor had some extra glasses and after the maximum part of the eclipse I was able to take photos through the glasses using my camera, which has a 50x optical zoom.

Trees provided a really unique view, with hundreds of eclipses visible through the leaves. This was occuring under lots of various trees.

I had heard on NASA's stream about trying to use a strainer and that worked really well.

Had I known how well the holes in a strainer worked, I would have tried to punch holes in a piece of paper or cardboard, perhaps spelling "Tampa" and other things. 2024!

Bald Eagles & Deer in David Crockett State Park in Lawrenceburg, TN (March 2017)

HollisPictures 2017-04-09 | This video contains footage of bald eagles and deer in David Crockett State Park in Lawrenceburg, Tennessee.

The first part of this video is of the bald eagles, Ed and Lindsey, along with their new eaglet. The bald eagles nest high above the opposite shore of Lake Lindsey from the viewing area.

You will need to bring binoculars or a telescope to view the bald eagles during nesting season. From 0:03 to 0:06 in the video the camera is using a 50x optical zoom. For much of the video of the eagles the camera uses a digital zoom out to 200x, balanced using a tripod.

The bald eagle flying in from 0:07 to 0:32 was filmed using a separate camera with poorer image quality due to a lesser optical zoom. At 0:03 you can actually see the shadow of the bald eagle that flew in and was filmed from the camera on a tripod. During nesting season one of the bald eagles usually flies in shortly before sunset.

The deer were filmed from the gate along the road that overlooks the large field that is located about halfway to Lake Lindsey. In the late evening you will often find deer across the field, either on the ridge to the left or to the right further in the distance.

300 Drone Christmas Show at Disney Springs (2016) - Starbright Holidays

HollisPictures 2016-12-31 | The "Starbright Holidays - An Intel Collaboration" drone show contained 300 drones at Disney Springs (previously known as Downtown Disney) at the Walt Disney World Resort in Florida.

The free show ran nightly at 7:00pm and 8:30pm from November 20th, 2016 through January 8th, 2017.

Filmed at the 7pm show on December 26th, 2016 behind the Bongos Cuban Cafe on the West Side at Disney Springs.

2016 Tampa Riverwalk Holiday Boat Parade of Lights

HollisPictures 2016-12-21 | The 2016 boat parade, as seen from various locations along the Tampa Riverwalk, including Curtis Hixon Park and the Tampa Convention Center, and finally at Channelside Bay Plaza. I followed the parade along the Riverwalk and filmed some of the boats again at Channelside, where I also filmed some of the larger boats that were not filmed earlier.

The boat parade arrived early along much of the route. It arrived at about 6:30pm at Curtis Hixon Park, which was on time, but by the end, it arrived about 30 to 40 minutes early at Channelside and finished at about 7:45pm there. (it was scheduled to arrive at 8pm)

There were only a couple of large boats, in addition to the Yacht StarShips, that did not travel up the Hillsborough River due to the height of the bridges.

2014 Holiday Boat Parade in Downtown Tampa

HollisPictures 2014-12-21 | The 2014 Holiday Boat Parade, Twinkle in Tampa Bay, as seen from the Tampa Convention Center in downtown Tampa, Florida on December 20th. This year's parade featured more boats than ever before and traveled next to Channelside, the Tampa Convention Center, Curtis Hixon Park and Water Works Park.

Some footage at the end is from, and around, Curtis Hixon Park and includes video of the Kennedy Street bridge rising to allow the parade to come back through after coming back from Water Works Park.

If you ever decide to view the parade along the Hillsborough River, keep in mind that some of the sailboats cannot travel up the Hillsborough River even when the smaller bridges are raised. (The Crosstown Expressway bridge over the river is likely not high enough.)

2014 Dana Shores Holiday Boat Parade in Tampa, FL

HollisPictures 2014-12-07 | The 8th Annual Dana Shores, Pelican Island & Sweetwater Holiday Boat Parade in the canals of Dana Shores, Pelican Island, Sweetwater and along northern Rocky Point in Tampa, Florida on December 6th, 2014.

I filmed the parade from two locations. The first is at the basin in front of Bahama Breeze which borders State Road 60 (which travels over the Courtney Campbell Causeway) on Rocky Point. That video appears second. That was where the parade started, but I was further away from the boats so I put that video second.

The second location, which is along southern Pelican Island / northern Rocky Point, appears first.

2014 Labor Day Fireworks & Boat Parade at Channelside in Tampa

2014 Fireworks at Water Works Park in Tampa

HollisPictures 2014-08-17 | On the first weekend after the new Water Works Park's opening they had a fireworks display.

2:50 to 9:23 is muted because some people on a boat started blasting music and rather than try and mute all the bad words, I simply muted the video until their boat finally shut off. By the time they got it back on, the grand finale drowned out their music.

2014 Memorial Day Fireworks at Channelside in Tampa

HollisPictures 2014-05-26 | On May 25th, 2014, over Memorial Day weekend, Channelside featured fireworks and live music in Tampa.

2014's "Light Up Channelside" Summer Fireworks series occurs every Saturday from June 7th through August 23rd, except July 5th. (fireworks will be on Friday, July 4th) Fireworks are at 9pm, with live music and food trucks starting at 5pm.

Green parrots removing blooms from a tree

HollisPictures 2013-05-10 | The green parrots are still removing blooms from my bottle brush trees. They have really started working on this one now. Around 6 to 8 come and start biting off the stems. However, I did notice that they do often hold them for a bit and pick at them. After looking at the bottle brush blooms closely, I guess they could be after some kind of nectar inside.

Two friendly black snakes

HollisPictures 2013-05-10 | Two black snakes in my yard in Tampa, Florida on May 8th, 2013. I have never seen two at the same time. I have also never seen them so friendly before. They usually bolt but one voluntarily came up near my feet. I also never saw them climb into my screen before either.
