BRILLIANT Concept Trailer Caravan for 2025 - Bürstner Talis

Andrew Ditton 2024-09-01 | The phenomenal Bürstner Talis Concept Caravan was unveiled at Caravan Salon Düsseldorf 2024.

It's a design concept which looks at reducing weight but also streamlining the aerodynamics - very important if towing a caravan with an Electric Vehicle. As well as being an EV-friendly caravan, the Burstner Talis Concept Caravan is also a versatile product, as you can use a lot of the furniture (including the kitchen) inside AND outside.

Please be aware that because this is a design study, there are no weights and no price available, and at the time of filming, the caravan is not available to purchase. Hopefully it will become available for the 2026 season.

In Cambridge, we visit The Orchard Tea Gardens in Grantchester, Anglesey Abbey NT, and Kettle's Yard - the art gallery of the University of Cambridge.

From Cambridge we head to Daleacres Caravan and Motorhome Club Site in Hythe in Kent, for a day out on the Romney Hythe and Dymchurch Railway.

We use the RHDR to get to Dungeness and a visit to Prospect Cottage, as well as to explore this gorgeous landscape.

Calm Caravan Holiday with Dogs Part 3 - Daytrip to Whitby, final fling on NYMR, then home

APRIL 2024. In this third and final Slow Video about my caravan holiday to Yorkshire, we take a daytrip to Whitby on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, climbing the 199 steps to Whitby Abbey and enjoying the panoramic view.

That evening, it's time to wind down with a nice home cooked meal.

The next day, our final day, it's time for a Last Hurrah on the NYMR before a final dog walk, hitching up the caravan, and heading home.

Calm Caravan Holiday with Dogs Pt 2 - Pickering and North Yorkshire Moors Railway

Andrew Ditton 2024-06-16 | In the second part of my relaxed and chilled caravan holiday, we travel to the town of Pickering in North Yorkshire and a delightful Camping and Caravanning Club Certificated Site (CS). The CS is right next to Pickering Station and the North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR).

For the next couple of days we do little else than ride in vintage carriages in this delightful Heritage Railway to Grosmont and back, take long walks with the dogs, and prepare and cook simple and wholesome food. It's my idea of heaven :)

One night it gets very cold (we even have a frost) and I find the gas heating too noisy. I instead use an electric oil-filled radiator powered by the V2L connection of my Kia EV6. The V2L allows the car to be used as a 220 volt 13 amp power supply. I measure the battery before bed, and after I get up, and the overnight consumption of the 750 watt heater might surprise you.

APRIL 2024. In this video we start with my last day at work as an International Train Manager with Eurostar taking my lunch break in the busy and beautiful city of Paris.

We then step things down a gear by hitching up my caravan to my Kia EV6 and heading off on holiday. First stop is at Clacket Lane Services on the M25 to charge the car and have a cup of tea. We then continue on to Kingsbury Water Park Camping and Caravanning Site near Tamworth to settle in for the night.

The next day we start slowly and enjoy the nature around Kingsbury Water Park before a quick grocery shop at Lidl. On we continue to Statfold Barn Railway at Statfold Country Park, where the annual Model Railway Exhibition is being hosted.

The next morning, we hitch up and head off to our next destination, stopping off first of all at Kimberley Caravans in Nottingham to buy a gas hose and exercise the dogs in the fields opposite. On we continue to Leeds Skelton Lake Services to charge the car and brew up a much-needed cuppa.

Knaus Yaseo - Innovative Lightweight Caravan ideal for EVs

Andrew Ditton 2023-09-10 | August 2023, Caravan Salon Düssseldorf. Knaus launches the Yaseo, a lightweight caravan aimed at the EV market but can be towed by any kind of vehicle. As it's an all-electric caravan, you can power it using a regular Electric Hook-up from a camp site, or the vehicle to load socket that's now becoming a feature on the newest generation of EVs. Live Work Connect Concept Caravan from Fendt

Andrew Ditton 2023-09-01 | One of the most exciting innovations at Caravan Salon Düsseldorf 2023 was the Fendt Live Work Connect Concept Caravan. This mobile Live Work Space boasts a host of innovative features that would really appeal to anyone who works on the road, from a musician to a content creator.

Health and Ergonomics are at the heart of the AdFENDTure project, protecting posture while sat for long periods working. There's the coolest water filter ever providing packaging-free water on hand with variable mineral content and with or without gas.

The Live Work Connect Caravan is the brainchild of Tom Hirschbach-Taddey from Cisco who has worked in collaboration with established and respected German caravan manufacturer Fendt to produce two flexible caravans: A smaller single-axle caravan aimed at freelancers and creatives, and a larger twin-axle caravan aimed at the corporate market, allowing large organisations to take their presentations and products to client site.

Mutt Sabbath 125 vs Mongrel 250 Which is best for returning bikers?

Andrew Ditton 2023-08-03 | A change to the normal caravan and motorhome content this week. Many bikers find it hard to decide between a 125cc motorcycle or a 250cc machine when getting back into biking after a break.

When I moved to the Hebrides I gave up my motorcycle as it would have sat unused in the shed for about 360 days a year. Moving back to sunny Kent means that I can once again get a motorbike.

I've been looking at Mutt Motorcycles for many years. Mutt make the coolest 125cc and 250cc motorcycles on the market. Their HQ is in Kings Norton, Birmingham, only 4 miles from Chapel Lane Caravan and Motorhome Club Site.

I want a motorbike that is light in weight, flickable, and fun. However, I was undecided between a 125cc and a 250cc.

In this video, Mutt kindly lend me a 125cc Sabbath and a 250cc Mongrel so I can pitch the two engines side-by-side.

London to Scotland IN A DAY - 325 miles in an EV towing a caravan to Moffat, and how I plan charging

Andrew Ditton 2023-07-09 | I broke my self-imposed 'rule' of a maximum of 250 miles per day, and tow a caravan with my Kia EV6 Electric Car the 325 miles from Commons Wood Caravan and Motorhome Club Site to Moffat Camping and Caravanning Site in the Scottish Borders in one day.

I show you how I plan the my route to minimise the chance of needing to queue at EV Chargers.

Outer Hebrides to London in an EV towing a caravan May 23

Andrew Ditton 2023-06-11 | MAY 2023: Towing a caravan from Scotland to London with an EV - what is it like? How does it compare to last year? I tow my caravan from my home in North Uist in the Outer Hebrides, Scotland, to Commons Wood Caravan and Motorhome Club Site, about 20 miles North of London.

We look at how long the journey takes, the charging stops, and how much extra time the journey takes in an EV compared with a petrol or diesel car.

In this video we focus purely on the facts and not the advantages or disadvantages of towing with an EV.

Jewels of Scotland: Magical Mull, Inspiring Iona

Andrew Ditton 2023-06-04 | MAY 2023: Dougal, Ted, and I joined our friends Andi and Petra in their Bürstner Motorhome for a few relaxing days in the Isle of Mull.

We kick off with the ferry sailing from Oban to Craignure with Caledonian MacBrayne, or CalMac Ferries. calmac.co.uk

We stay at Fidden Farm Campsite in Fionnphort: fiddenfarm.co.uk

We decide on a couple of daytrips, the first of which to Iona where we take the ferry from Fionnphort to Iona. Iona is the place where St Columba brought Christianity to Scotland. Once in the island we take a nice walk before exploring Iona Abbey and then Iona Nunnery.

The next day we head to Ulva, but were surprised to find that there was no ferry on a Saturday, which is not mentioned on the website (you have to look on Facebook instead which is not convenient if you don't have a Facebook account.) https://www.ulva.scot/

CalMac Ferries of Scotland - Trip Report from MV Clansman

MAY 2023: Caledonian MacBrayne Ferries of Scotland, more commonly known as CalMac Ferries, has had more than its share of bad press recently. Struggling to maintain lifeline island connections with an aging and partly life-expired fleet, the West of Scotland's Ferry Operator has suffered multiple breakdowns as it waits for mis-procured new tonnage, some of which is now FIVE YEARS behind schedule.

But is it all that bad? As an Islander myself who lives in North Uist, I've had my fair share of cancelled, re-routed, retimed, and unavailable ferries. But I also travel with other ferry operators throughout the UK, and compared to some of the big names, there is a LOT to love about CalMac. In this video I take a trip aboard the MV Clansman from Lochmaddy in North Uist to Uig in the Isle of Skye.

Normally this route is served by the CalMac Ferries MV Hebrides, sister ship to the Clansman, but she was on her annual overhaul at the time of sailing.

The Clansman normally plies the routes between Oban, Coll, Tiree, and Colonsay, and on Summer Wednesdays her Coll and Tiree sailings are extended to Castlebay in the Isle of Barra to maintain a direct connection between the Inner and Outer Hebrides.

Carrying an Electric Bike with a camper van, motorhome, or caravan

Andrew Ditton 2023-05-21 | I was loaned an electric mountain bike from Mark2 Bikes, but my primary concern was how was I going to safely and conveniently carry this eBike on my caravan?

This led me down a rabbit hole of research which made me realise that the bike carrier on my caravan is NOT suitable for carrying eBikes. As such I decided to look into the best solutions for carrying an eBike on a motorhome, a campervan, a van conversion, and a caravan. The video is split up into chapters thus:

There were two things that I was not aware of when I bought my EV, and that is the Cobalt Mining that is necessary for the production of EV batteries, and also the fact that the rate of charge slows right down when the temperature is below zero, making Ultra-Rapid Chargers practically redundant. Then there is the huge stress of queueing at public chargers.

From Beach Waste to Camper Vans - Studio Vans Camper Kits

In this video we visit the team at Studio Vans, Benbecula, who make a modular camper van system that you can have fitted at their workshop in the Outer Hebrides, or can be sent to you to be fitted at home or at a local workshop to you.

At the heart of Studio Vans’ ethos is the use of sustainable materials, and making good use of ocean plastic washed up on the beaches in the island. This plastic is recycled and currently makes the worktops in the vans - although the team is hoping to expand how this is used in the future.

Being a modular system, it can go from van to van, so even if the van itself expires, you can take the interior and put it into another van. This makes it the ideal solution for people considering purchasing an EV in the near future, but are not quite ready to commit to electric yet. You can fit the kit to a diesel van now, and move it to an electric van when the time comes.

Being a kit, you can also start small and see what works for you before upgrading or adding to it down the line.
