Well, let’s talk about their history and then break down the reasons the lesbians spaces of the 70s, 80s, and 90s have steadily declined and why so few queer women identify strictly as “Lesbians” nowadays.Who is “allowed to be a lesbian” is a debate the community has been having since the community existed. Do bisexuals count? Are femmes even real lesbians? Can a straight woman be a lesbian? In the 70s some people thought so. Lesbian activity has been happening for the entirety of human history but as a community, lesbians and other women who love women have had a hard time parsing out who “really belongs” in their community, to the detriment of their spaces.With threats from the outside in the form of anti-homosexuality laws, capitalism, and the looming threat of fascism, the lesbian community has come together time and time again and overcome this exclusionary rhetoric to literally save the queer community in the face of certain death. Keeping its histories and caring for the sick and dying in the face of unprecedented suffering in the face of the AIDS crisis. Fighting for women’s rights. Fighting for liberation. Joining with other marginalized people for mutual liberation. But exclusionary politics have plagued lesbian and feminist movements since the beginning. Causes that are only for “certain kinds” of lesbians. “Certain kinds” of women. This has never gone well. It has never led to liberation.
