The bog is so large that I couldn’t get it all in one shot even at the drones maximum altitude of 120 meters. I went down lower and did a 360 degree pan to give you a better idea of the size.
I have always wondered where the bog got its name . I have no proof what so ever but I have always wanted to attribute it to my ancestor Robert Calder who is thought to be the first Calder to settle in the new world. He was an Argyle Highlander and was disbanded shortly after the war and arrived on Campobello at some point in the 1760’s. He was originally given a grant of land around New Castle , NB but didn’t like the area he was from a costal area in Scotland and wanted to be near the water, so he moved to Campobello. I have no proof that he fought with General Wolfe but I have always wondered. He was married three times and two of his wives died before him he had 8 children. There is a legend that says there has always been a Robert Calder on Campobello from that day to this.
Black Beauty Zucchini grows on open semi-upright plants producing glossy black-green fruits that grow to be 15-20 cm x 5 cm (6-8" x 2"). The firm fruit is very tender and the creamy-white flesh has a delicious flavour, making it a great choice for the home garden.
2. Spacemaster Cucumbers produce heavy yields of large, uniform fruits that grow to 18-23 cm (7-9"). Growing on dwarf bush vines, these cucumbers are never bitter and easy to enjoy. Compact and bushy, this variety is ideal for small growing areas such as containers and hanging baskets.
3.
Rouge Vif d'Etampes. maxima.
This French heirloom produces beautiful deep red, flat pumpkins with deep ridges that are the first to colour in the pumpkin patch. Sow Rouge Vif d’Etampes pumpkin seeds for a sprawling plant that produces two to four lovely 9kg (20lb) fruits. These are good for artistic carving, decorations, and winter meals. Moderate resistance to powdery mildew. Rouge Vif d'Etampes translates as "bright red from Etampes." Etampes is an ancient commune near Paris, and the fruits were said to be popular in Paris' Central Market in the 1880s.
4 SQUASH WINTER, BOSTON MARROW
105 days. Lovely 15 lb fruit is hubbard-shaped and a brilliant red-orange in color. This variety was first documented back to 1831 by Fearing Burr, the author of Field & Garden Vegetables of America. This variety was first mentioned being grown by Mr. J.M. Ives of Salem, Mass. Mr. Ives had received seeds from a friend in Northampton, Mass, who had obtained his seeds from a friend in Buffalo, NY. This variety came to be grown in the Buffalo area after a tribe of Native Americans traveled through the area and distributed seed. From this historic introduction, Boston Marrow soon became one of the most important commercial squashes for 150 years.
5. LETTUCE, TENNIS BALL
55 days. Rather loose heads are petite, 4-6 inches in diameter, Bibb or Butterhead type. This variety is documented to have been grown at Monticello by Thomas Jefferson, who noted: “it does not require so much care and attention” as other types. We offer the correct, black-seeded original strain. Listed in the Slow Foods Ark of Taste, and beloved by many about a century ago.
6. Aleppo Pepper
A excellent variety with medium sized pods with very good flavor. Plants grow very well in most climates with very good yields. This variety is most often use in Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cuisine and is very good for salads and salsas it also makes excellent powder. It is also grown commercially in Syria in a town called Aleppo where it is said to come from.
7. Gardener's Sweetheart Tomato My personal favourite cherry tomato! Large, shiny, heart-shaped cherries with a smooth texture and rich flavour. Low-juice compared to most other cherry tomatoes. This variety originated in the gardens of Maine seed steward Will Bonsall, from a chance cross between Gardener's Delight cherry and a plum tomato. Vigorous and productive vines.
8. Manitoba tomato
Manitoba Tomato seeds produce vigorous determinate plants that thrive in cool climates with short seasons. An early producer with excellent yields, Manitoba Heirloom tomatoes were originally developed in the mid 1950's by the Morden Experimental Farm in Morden, MB to ripen during the short summer season. An excellent choice on the West Coast.
A prairie favourite, Manitoba tomato plants bear medium-large fruits 170 grams (6 oz.). The bright red fruits have smooth skin and firm, meaty flesh with a refreshing, tangy tomato taste. Well suited for slicing and preserving.
9. TOMATO, THORBURN'S TERRA-COTTA
75 days. Incredible flavor, color and history! Introduced in 1893 by James Thorburn of New York, this is one of the most sensational tomatoes we have ever grown. With honey-brown skin, orange-pink flesh, and green seed mass, this is an eye-catching slicer with an out-of-this-world flavor.
10. Verbascum moth mullein
Verbascum blattaria, the moth mullein, is a flowering biennial plant belonging to the figwort family Scrophulariaceae. A native of Eurasia and North Africa, it has naturalized in the United States and most of Canada since its introduction and has become an invasive species there.
11. Verbascum species - might not over winter hardy to zone 6
12. Yarrow 'Colorado Mix’ Achillea millefolium
Yarrow has a long-standing tradition as a healing herb, and many a soldier relied on the leaves of Woundwort or Herbe Militaris to stop the bleeding of battlefield wounds. Medieval peasants gathered its pungent leaves to add to the wild-crafted salads of the day, giving rise to another folk name, Old Man's Pepper. Yarrow Colorado Mix is a powerhouse bloomer adding sheets of flat-topped flowers above gray-green ferny leaves in garden borders and rock gardens. Cut for fresh or dried flowers, deadhead, or cut back once the long-lasting flowers eventually fade.
