The Computer That Got Us to the Moon - The Apollo Guidance Computer SciJoy 2019-08-02 | #TheApolloGuidanceComputer was built to navigate and guide the #Apollo astronauts to the moon. The #AGC and the inertial measurement unit (IMU) told astronauts where they were. The IMU contained gyroscopes and accelerometers. The IMU was calibrated using an onboard telescope and sextant. The AGC also controlled the engines and reaction control thrusters. The astronauts talked to the computer using verb and noun commands on DSKY (display and keyboard). The computer itself was make of core memory. The fixed memory was woven core rope memory. This is where the programs, constants, star charts, and landmark charts were woven and saved for each flight. The logic unit was make of integrated circuits (dual NOR gates). The computer could only run one job at a time. The executive determined what jobs to prioritize and run. The computer could restart programs, put them to sleep, and had very basic error checking. It was designed by MIT's Instrumentation Lab and built by Raytheon. There was one for the command service module and one for the lunar excursion module. New versions were built for every flight.Many of the images and video came from this site. How do servo motors work? | Teardown and explanation beyond the pulse. SciJoy 2019-04-13 | I did a teardown of a servo motor to see what it is made of and how it works. Inside the casing is the DC motor, gears, a potentiometer, and an integrated chip.I couldn't find great data sheets for the chips in my particular hobby servos. Instead, I looked up some popular RC servo chips. They all seem to have the same basic components - a potentiometer hooked to a voltage regulator and one shot generator, which converts position of the armature to a PWM pulse. This PWM pulse is compared to the original one sent by the microcontroller. This logic board finds the difference between the pulses, which is called the error. The magnitude of the error is sent to a pulse stretcher and the direction of the error is send to a flip flop to be stored as a high or low. The magnitude of the error is stretched out by the pulse stretcher. Then both parts of the error are sent to the output driver, which is probably an h-bridge. Most servos are 50HZ, which means this control loop is happening 50 times every second until the error is "zero". The dead band for the pulse stretcher sets a minimum pulse length that it will stretch. Anything below this limit is considered zero error.There is also a resistor goes between the IC and the motor. The back EMF from the motor is used to dampen the control loop. Tracking Raspberry Pi Robots Distance with Encoders | Twitter Controlled Robot Ep 4 SciJoy 2019-01-24 | We looked at how optical and magnetic incremental encoders are used to measure the distance moved by our Raspberry Pi Robot. How to control motors from Raspberry Pi with Adafruit DC Motor Controller | Twitter Controlled Robot SciJoy 2019-01-18 | I learned how to control DC motors with a Raspberry Pi Zero W and an Adafruit Feather Motor Controller board using CircuitPython. I learned how to use the TB6612FNG chip to drive the motors. That chip has two full h-bridge circuits to control the direction of the motors. The Feather also has a PCA9685 chip, which is a PWM driver. It communicates with the Raspberry Pi over I2C. The library for this board is written in CircuitPython, which is a version of MicroPython. It is meant for embedded systems. Setting up a Raspberry Pi Zero | Twitter Controlled Robot Ep 2 SciJoy 2018-12-05 | We set up a new #RaspberryPi Zero for our Twitter controlled #Robot. We show how to install #Raspbian with a monitor and without ( #headless). We setup #FTP and #SSH in order to control the Pi from our computer. I used a Mac, but I reference some alternatives for Windows.This video discusses the installation of the Rasbian operating system onto a microSD card either by unzipping NOOBS or flashing with Etcher. One way to load Raspbian onto the Pi uses an HDMI external monitor, a mouse and keyboard. A second method uses the boot partition on the SD card to setup WiFi and SHH. Then you can control the Pi Zero from the command line. I believe this boot partition method is new to the Pi Zero. For the Pi 3, I've used the peripheral method.You can enable SHH from the interfaces menu from the command line or from the configuration menu on the Pi desktop. File transfer protocol is setup using Netatalk (Windows could be Fillezilla). This does not give access to the root files, but you can access user files like on the desktop and in documents. This is where we will store our Python code.I set up a static IP so I know the server address. I it also useful if we use MQTT to talk to the Pi from other devices or the from a service on the internet. Using Circuit Playground Express to Count Punches SciJoy 2018-11-21 | We use #CircuitPlaygroundExpress boards by #Adafruit to light up and track the number of punches thrown. The three axis accelerometer triggers an event in the #MakeCode program every time a certain acceleration threshold is crossed. Purple neopixles track the number of punches thrown in a set. Vacuum Chamber Build with CNC Mill - BTS SciJoy 2018-06-28 | This is a BTS video of how and why we built a vacuum chamber. This was the first time Jacklyn used a CNC mill. The tube (chamber) is made of polycarbonate. The end caps were machined out of aluminum. And the seal is made from silicon and cornstarch. We initially used this to demonstrate high altitude balloon concepts. We hope to use it a lot more in the future.

Lofty Design Using CAD SciJoy 2017-11-07 | Computer modeling is how three engineers from different states were able to design and build a custom tracking and camera system for a high altitude balloon. Tim took the terrible drawings that Zach and Jacklyn made and used Fusion 360 to turn them into a computer model. This allowed the team to iterate designs, determine weight limits, understand each other, and use the files to 3d print parts. The team only met in person once to assemble the whole rig. Just like you can't keep track of how many steps you walk in a day, motors can’t monitor how far they turn. Depending on the encoder, they can monitor how many rotations, what direction it is turning, and what angle exactly the motor has rotated.Incremental encoders track the number of rotations of a devices.Quadrature encoders can determine directions in addition to the number of rotations traveled.Absolute encoders determine a more accurate position of a device. But it is best practice to sample your signal at twice the signal frequency. This is call the Nyquist rate. If your sampling is less than that, you might not capture the true shape of your signals curve.
