Last week we showed you our JIMGLO lightweight open trailer and how easy it is to use. Also last week we announced a giveaway contest with our homie Dennis Caco from MaxBoost/Autocannon fame. The deal was that whomever guesses the weight or the closest to the weight will win the brand new MaxBoost Omibus book and a VTEC Academy tee shirt. So, Brian brought out the scales and this is the result!

I started a part list to swap this into the 94 accord and would just like to make sure I have most of what I will need. Thanks
you in advance and for any tips in doing this swap."
B18A1 into EG Civic
"I have 92 Civic VX and want to swap a B18a1 into it. What wiring harness, distributor, ECU, alternator, and axles will I need to make it a bolt-in swap? In addition, if I utilize the HA Sport engine mount kit for the EG chassis, will I need to make a dent in the frame rail to get the motor to fit? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!Michael"
2002 Civic EX K Swap"Hello i have a 2002 civic ex coupe with a d17 and 5 spd manual. Just purchased a k24a2 from a 2005 tsx vin 9. Complete with harness ecu even gas pedal. But it is an automatic. I have found a few 6spd manuals but havnt bought one yet. This is my first honda project so all the db dc gd em names i have no idea what they mean. There seems to be a ton of almost info out there but none is very accurate what i need for swap.So far ive learned i need an rsx subframe but nothing about what years compatible. I did find a 2002 rsx subframe but dont know if its what i need? Also ive learned i need a crv engine bracket on passenger side. And 2005 civic hybird radiator and air con parts.Hasport mounts but dont know which ones?Unsure if the 2005 tsx exhaust header and down pipe will fit? No clue if i can use the tsx throttle body? Every video shows it replaced with others but dont understand why cant use it? If its throttle by wire i am getting all wiring complete. On to wiring is it feasible to use tsx at engine harness to passenger compartment harness? Will i need special convertors for speedometer etc? Going to 6spd manual how do i go about deactivating automatic trans sensors in ecu so no engine codes and everything work properly?Or should i be looking at using the manual trans ecu allready in car? Also best half shaft and axles to use 4 lug wheels Seen a video mentioned an imobilizer deactivator. Is this something i have to do also? And would really like to keep shifter looking oem so nobody suspects k swap. What is best option? And the million other things i havnt discovered yet that i will need.Oh ya and im far from rich so price is importantThank You for your time.Sincerely Chuck""
"How i know you are a real professional. When you strip wire you did not twist the end before crimping.Long time ago worked for a luxury ship company that lost huge amount of money over a single employee who "knew it all". That employee had twisted every wire before terminating. Over time wire relaxed where twisted and fell out of terminals.Guess its just my pet peave at my current employer i randomly remove a wire if twisted i tell employee redo it all.I litterally said outloud. Hell ya that guy knows his shit. When seen you did not twist ends.

We have loaded cars on trailers many times and sometimes it can be a pain and really sketchy depending on the trailer, car and if we're doing it solo. Brian found a great option for people that need to tow their lowered car places from JIMGLO called the JIMGLO Ego. It's a lightweight aluminum single car open trailer. With the help from our friend, Dennis Caco the creator of Max Boost!, we show you how it works and its features.
More info on the trailer is available at jimglo.com/open-car-trailer

Last time our Project TSX got a front big brake upgrade from Fastbrakes and front adjustable camber upper control arms from K-Tuned. Well, what's good for the front is good for the back. So to bring the car back in to balance on braking we are installing much larger rotors in the rear. Since we have the TSX in the air, we're going to install some adjustable camber arms to eliminate the hot boi stance negative camber.

The transmission that comes with the K24 from a TSX is pretty well matched for the K24 power, but it is missing one very important performance feature: a LSD or limited slip differential. A LSD helps with traction by getting the wheels to turn when you need them the most. That added traction really helps with launching from a dead stop AND when exiting out of corners. Brian walks through the installation.

The SEMA Show came back in full force this year. We don't know the exact attendance numbers, but it seems there were way more people at the show. What there were fewer of were OEMs including the ones that really matter, Honda and Acura. But, just because Honda and Acura didn't have a booth in the show, that didn't mean there weren't Hondas and Acuras scattered throughout the venue. There were also companies that support the Honda aftermarket.

This is a long time coming. We are finally doing something about Budget EG's pulled fenders. For year now people have been ripping on the "custom" pulled fenders on Budget EG and thanks to Touge Factory people will have to find another issue with our project. These are going to look sick!

When the first gen CRV dropped it seemed like the enthusiasts didn't really take notice. It was the mid-1990s and anybody that wanted to go off-roading wasn't choosing the new Honda CRV. But, that didn't seem to matter much to the general consumer. Even though it is based on the 6th gen Civic, people bought it up since it brought the utility that Honda is famous for. Little did we know that the CRV was a truly capable off-roader.
The suspension and the AWD system is the real star of the show. In fact, Carter found this out for himself while taking his CRV into the desert over hills and through washes where 4Runners and whatnot only dare to go. So, now we're all in and taking the CRV to the next level with Mamba wheels and a lift kit from HRG Offroad.

The K series crank pulleys on the Honda K series engines from 2001 to 2015 are all interchangeable. That is somewhat common knowledge, but did you know that choosing the right pulley for your specific application can make you more power? Brian knows and he breaks it down.

The NSX Club of America held NSXPO 2022 Track Day right in our backyard at Podium Club in Casa Grande, AZ. Of course, with it so close we HAD to go check it out. There's something so cool about seeing nothing but NSXs (and two S2000s) tearing up the track. There were OG NSXs and new NSXs. There were bone stock NSXs and highly modified NSXs. So many cars to check out! Brian and our friend Claude walk the pits to look at a few different takes on the Honda supercar.

Honda injector impedance isn't cool. It isn't fun or sexy, but it's important if you want your car to actually run and survive. Typically Honda injectors are either low impedance or high impedance. But, how do you know what your engine uses or what you injectors do you have? Brian breaks it down and shows you.

Last time our Mini TL TSX got big brakes and steel braided brake line from Fastbrakes, "new" 5Zigen FN01RC wheels, and coilovers from Tein. This time we are upgrading the suspension with the addition of a rear sway bar from Progress. The Progress rear sway bar for the TSX steps up to a 22mm adjustable bar and that should really help the sedan rotate when attacking the corners.

Exciting times around the shop! Full-Race makes a bolt-on turbo kit for the FK8 Civic Type R and while we no longer have a Type R, Brian bought it any way. Why would we buy a turbo kit for a we don't even have? We aren't getting a Civic Type R any time soon. But, Brian has a plan.

Back in January 2022, Brian's new-to-him TSX was smashed and the damage was pretty bad, totaled. Some times the universe works in mysterious ways. As he looked for a replacement Brian found a smoking deal on a newer first gen TSX and then he scored another silver TSX. Now instead of one project TSX we have two, possibly three if we can pull the body on our smashed TSX!
That brings us to this TSX dubbed Mini TL. It's running great, but it is stock and we don't really do stock around here. So, first up on the modification agenda are the the suspension and brakes.

When you do a K swap the accessory belt is usually not included and if it is, it typically isn't great. But, did you know that the belt size isn't the determining factor. Brian shows why one belt will work while another will not.

Meet Vic. Vic owns and races his B16A swapped 1986 CRX Si. This CRX is the first Hasport Performance engine swap kit that Brian designed from the ground up way back in the day. Flash to some 20 plus years later and Vic wants to hunt higher horsepower cars and to do that he needs more power and torque. Of course, K is the answer! A JDM K24 swap to be more exact.

Mishimoto compact catch can is a great product on paper. It's a solid design proven to work and the price won't break the bank. So imagine our surprise when we saw what came with our catch can for mounting it to our project car! That's after making a phone call to Mishimoto for help with fittings for the catch can. Watch out now, Brian is coming in hot!

B17 swapping our EF hatch, Project Backmarker, should be a relatively simple process. After all Brian has been doing engine swaps since the '90s! But, things aren't always so simple and every swap seems to come with its own little hiccups. Luckily upgrading the brakes was hiccup free thanks to help from Mr. Fastbrakes, Brian Hasty. We go from a totally stock setup to discs all around and bigger rotors up front.
See the OG feature on Project Backmarker here: motortrend.com/how-to/modp-0906-project-1988-honda-civic

We received a viewer email and wanted to address some of the questions. This time around it is about other options for wiring a reverse lockout and Synchrotech rebuild kits.
Michael writes:
"Hello again!
I was very pleased to see my question answered here - https://vtec.academy/6-speed-element-reverse-lockout-and-02-04-rsx-ecu-kpro-conversion-harness-for-integra/
1) I watched the video and thought of an even easier way to potentially do this/make this work. I wanted your take on it - would it be possible to wire that RSX lockout solenoid to the brake light(s) or reverse light(s) in my converted Honda Elements? I think the ground cable(s) can be wired to basically anywhere on the chassis.
If this would work like I think it would, the mechanism would only engage/you would only be able to get into reverse, if you were on the brake. I don't see people on the brakes when they are intending on going into 6th gear (bottom right in the pattern), so this could be a cheap and good solution.
Also, I've found a pigtail for this too - ebay.com/itm/255078095442?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&fromMakeTrack=true
I also have 2 other questions:
2) What is your opinion on using Synchrotech parts? I've read conflicting things, ranging from, the parts are great, to, I'm a Honda mechanic and I've had nothing but problems with customers' transmissions, that have Synchrotech synchronizers/rebuild kits.
3) For a 2009-2010 Element, would this (MK-SYN117 (hptautosport.com/products/synchrotech-carbon-master-rebuild-kit-civic-si-2006-2010-mk-syn117-3 or sync-trans.com/products/mk-syn117-carbon-master-rebuild-kit-6-speed-k-series-05-15?pr_prod_strat=copurchase&pr_rec_pid=7329843216634&pr_ref_pid=7340008767738&pr_seq=uniform)) kit be the right one to use?
Thanks!
Michael"

Pulling up in a loud car can be fun. People turning and staring at your car because it's making an annoying, whiny sound can be the opposite of fun. It can be embarrassing with people thinking that your Honda is a hunk of junk. A lot of the time the culprit for extraneous noises is a leaky power steering pump. Replacing a power steering pump with a new OEM unit can be an expensive proposition. But that is not your only option. In many cases replacing the OEM seals, gaskets and o-rings will fix your power steering pump. Today we have our buddy and mechanic, Doug Ruthroff, will show us how to disassemble and reassemble the power steering pump for a 2006 Honda Ridgeline. This process is very similar for Honda power steering pumps across the board. In fact, the part numbers for the replacement seals, gaskets and o-rings are the same as the ones that come on the EM1 Civic Si! Be sure to check your specific power steering pump for the correct parts.
These are the parts used in this video:
Honda 91249-PNC-003 Seal, Power Steering Pump
Honda 91345-RDA-A01O-Ring (13.0X1.9)
Honda 91347-PAA-A01O-Ring (16.7X1.8)
Honda 91347-P2A-003O-Ring (15.2X2.4)
Honda 91348-P2A-003O-Ring (51.0X2.4)
Honda 91349-P2A-003 Seal, Power Steering Pump Cover

Getting your air conditioning to actually work in your K swapped DC2 Integra requires some rewiring. Unless you bought your engine harness with it prewired, you're going to be sweating it our when the temperature rises. So, Brian breaks it down after getting this question from Jose A. Rodriguez:
"Kswap a/c

What is better than a screaming K20 ripping iVTEC all over the place? If you answered "Nothing," you'd be wrong. And if you answered with "Your mom," you'd be immature. The real answer is a screaming K24 ripping iVTEC all over the place with it's sweet bump in torque and top end power. In the real world the best replacement for a K series is a K series. The 8th gen Civic Si already K powered, but it is not a straight up swap. We show you what needs to be changed to get a K24 into the engine bay of your FA5 or FG2

It's been a LONG time since we first started up our 8th gen Civic to find the K20 swap we had smoked like crazy. So, now we are super psyched to finally get the replacement K24A2 from a TSX installed and possibly running. If you need a refresher on what we needed to change from our K20 setup just go here youtu.be/IMIhQCnYThY and you can see it's not a straight up swap.

B series into the 4th generation Civic is the classic Honda engine swap. Yeah, the ZC was the OG, but with the B series swap was when people really started to take notice of Honda performance. However, as classic as it is, it is not a bolt-in affair. The biggest struggle for most people is the wiring. Luckily we've been doing this for a while and with the resurgence of B swaps, we want to show you to what needs to be done to change a 4th generation ZC or Civic Si harness to work with the VTEC B series. It's relatively simple and Brian breaks it down step by step.

We have been doing a lot of wiring lately. And it looks really easy when you have the correct tools. Wiring is not an area you want to have issues with, so it is best to get it right the first time.
These crimpers and other tools and parts we've used in our videos are available here: amazon.com/shop/vtec.academy/list/3QV1EQLQU08A5
We used the Iwiss IWS-1424B, IWC-1424A and SN-28B crimpers.

When we left off Brian was taking apart our ZC engine. He found that the ZC was not in the best shape. Since then we have decided to power our Civic with a retro B series. The B series that we will go with is the B18C1 from a third gen Integra, but that engine needs to be rebuilt. In the meantime we're going to install the unicorn of USDM second gen engines, the B17. Not a bad fall back, eh?

Have you ever stalled your car when you don't normally? It's happened to all of us. Usually it's a brain fart. But ever stalled more than once? The problem probably doesn't lie within your driving, but in your car. Brian walks through what to check out to get your car back to shifting like it's supposed to.

The transmission you choose to use for your K swap determines certain things for your installation. Things like shifter and shifter cables need to match the action of the gear selector on the transmission. Another thing that the transmission determines is how your car gets the speed signal. There are basically two ways that Honda K series transmissions relay the speed signal. The transmission will use either a countershaft speed sensor, a CSS for short, or a vehicle speed sensor, typically referred to as a VSS.
In this video Brian shows how to wire a K series engine harness that was previously used with a transmission using CSS to be used with a transmission using VSS. Using Brian's method of adding a VSS connector will allow you to keep the option of changing back to a transmission using a CSS in the future.

Race harnesses look awesome, but there's a method to choosing them. With our K24 EK Civic hatchback project we are going with a very specific kind of harness from Crow Safety Gear that places the shoulder portion properly on the HANS device. But, what will it work for you? Carter breaks it down.

Budget EG stomped Aaron's B18C powered EG and that was solid. But when Budget EG hit the track against muscle and sports cars, it wasn't enough. We could keep up in the corners, not coming out of the corners though. First we tried to swap a TSX K24A2 head on to our Accord K24A4 block and that was a no-go. The shape of the combustion chamber didn't play well with our pistons. So we pulled a K24A1 from a wrecked CRV in the yard. The K24A2/K24A1 combo should give us the boost in power that we're looking for.

It's summer and here in Arizona it is h-o-t. This is not a great time to drive without a good running air conditioner. We already know that we're wrestling with an electrical issue messing with our turn signal, but our 2012 Honda Fit now has a weak AC. An AC not blowing cold air when it's hot out can only be for a couple of reasons. Once we ruled out the fans not kicking on we decide to try refilling the R134A refrigerant to see if that fixes things.

In this episode, we tackle the job of creating an adapter harness for the Civic Si engine harness. We'll need to change how the power is distributed and the O2 sensors are wired. We could have just modified the stock harness, that process would be a little more difficult due to the location of the plug. Maybe we'll try that in a future episode.
A PDF of the instructions for the conversion is available on the VTEC Academy website here:
http://vtec.academy/8th-gen-k-swap-wiring-harness/
The terminals we used are available from Corsa-Technic. Here's the link.
corsa-technic.com/item.php?item_id=698&category_id=164
I used connectors harvested from a wrecked Civic, but if you would prefer new connectors instead of used, they are also available from Corsa-Technic:

The mount kit is also out now from Hasport Performance: hasportperformance.com/product/fgk1-mount-kit-for-k-series-engine-swap-into-2006-2011-civic-equipped-originally-with-the-r18-engine

A harsh ride can spoil a great car. When swapping a Honda using swap mounts noise and vibration are going to increase, but it doesn't mean it has to be super loud and uncomfortable. No two cars are exactly the same. Having driven multiple swapped cars with identical swaps using the same mount kits and having totally different experiences can speak to that. There are ways to install your swap using Hasport Performance mounts to get the least amount of unpleasant noise and vibration. Brian breaks it down in this Three Minute Thursday.

When you're taking your car to the track and really start to push it you quickly realize that keeping yourself in place can be a struggle with stock seats. Once you find that perfect seat you need to find a way to connect it with your car. If you're tall, you're going to want to mount it as low as possible so your helmet won't bang against the roof. You can always bolt it straight to the floor, but you lose adjustability. Don't worry, because PCI has a solution.

We are sick of getting passed at the track. Or budget K24 Accord swapped Civic hatchback performed well against our B18C powered Civic hatch, but the higher horsepower cars, not so much. We can hang through the twisty bits. But Camaros, Mustangs, BMWs and FK8 Type Rs just speed right by as soon as we hit the straights. So, we need a good chunk of power. Trying to stay "budgety" we try a TSX head swap. Unfortunately for us the head swap isn't quite so simple.

Brian is Mr. K Swap. One of the most asked questions he gets is about what K series shifter works with what transmission. It may seem kind of complicated, but it really isn't. In this Three Minute Thursday Brian shows the difference in shifters and transmissions while giving you an easy way to remember what works together.

We were fortunate to be invited to bring a car to turn some laps at the track by Max Boost creator, Dennis Caco. So, we brought out the Hasport Performance K24 turbo Prelude to run with the other YouTube personalities and influencers at AutoClub Speedway. This was Dennis' way to say thank you for supporting the Max Boost book series with the latest release being the Max Boost Omnibus which features all of the classic comics from the Import Tuner days AND all new stories. If you get the opportunity to pick it up, it's definitely worth it. It's available at shop.maxboost.com

VTEC Academy is a place for Honda fans who feel the same way and who seek the most accurate technical information and commentary to continue that very legacy and make whatever Honda it is that they drive just a little bit better.
