UnpackedWhen Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson became leader of Chabad-Lubavitch in 1951, he created a global phenomenon that would change Judaism forever. Chabad-Lubavitch is one part of the greater revival movement called Hasidic Judaism which developed in the 18th century and began to spread across Europe with each Hasidic court following their own religious leader or “Rebbe.”
Scholar, engineer, and visionary leader, the Lubavitcher Rebbe created a blueprint for how to spread a love for Judaism. With his guidance, emissaries or “shluchim'' have built Jewish infrastructure across the globe, ensuring that Jews from all walks of life have the opportunity to take part in Jewish life, no matter where they are or where they’ve come from.

#Chabad #Lubavitch #JewsShould The IDF Be Held To A Higher Moral Standard?Unpacked2022-12-28 | Today’s armies are subject to international humanitarian law, national pressure and public scrutiny. Yet they must also uphold themselves to their own specific ethical and moral codes.
For decades, Israel’s military, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), has fought for the state’s very existence. Over time, many of Israel’s enemies have moved beyond the traditional battlefield and brokered for peace…or political warfare.
Enemies like Hamas, Islamic Jihad and Hezbollah have tested the IDF’s morality by using unethical tactics beyond the accepted principles of warfare, putting innocent human lives at risk. Until Israel’s enemies hold themselves to a higher moral code, the IDF will remain prepared and armed to defend Israel from constant threat while striving to maintain its own ethical code.

#IDF #Israel #MilitaryDid Saddam Hussein Launch a Nuclear Attack on Israel?Unpacked2022-12-14 | Back in the first Gulf War, Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein attacked Iran, resulting in thirty-four countries entering an alliance against him. Hussein’s response? Threatening to start a war with Israel if anyone attacked Iraq.
Rather than striking Iraq in defense, the Israeli government issued gas masks to all citizens and instructed them to keep them on hand at all times in case of chemical attack.
When the US-led coalition attacked Iraq in 1991, Iraqi missiles rained down on Israel. While the Israeli death toll was low during the second Gulf War, the experience had a lasting impact on the country. The weaknesses that had been revealed during the experience inspired the invention of the Iron Dome, the installation of bomb shelters in all new homes and a massive overhaul of Israeli security.

#GulfWar #Israel #middleeastHave Palestinians & Israelis Ever Made Peace?Unpacked2022-12-07 | After years at war, Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) sought out a change of pace. In January 1993, the Israelis and the Palestinians opened secret negotiations on neutral ground in Oslo, Norway.
In September of 1993, a series of peace agreements called the Oslo Accords were signed by Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and PLO leader Yasser Arafat. However, within eight months, terror reigned down on Israel once again.
A new agreement called Oslo Two was signed in an attempt to re-establish peace. Many Israelis and Palestinians were hopeful about the new agreement, yet the haunting events that followed still impact the Israeli-Palestinian peace process today.

#israel #palestine #westbankDid Israel Take Over Palestine?Unpacked2022-11-30 | The Land of Israel has been referred to by many different names throughout its history- Canaan, Judah, Judea, Israel and Palestine. Each of these names has deep historical significance based on the inhabitants or conquerors of the land.
Though modern day Israel was established in a land known as Palestine, named by the Romans who took control in the Second Century CE, its inhabitants have been historically Jewish since biblical times. No matter where Jewish people live across the world, the land of Israel continues to be their homeland.

#Israel #Palestine #westbankHow Did Israel Become the Tech Capital of the World?Unpacked2022-11-23 | While Israel’s economy today is widely associated with the image of a fast-paced “start up nation,” the founding fathers of the modern state envisioned it as a Socialist utopia.
In its early years, Israel’s economy was controlled by the “Histadrut,” a socialist labor union. This union held control of the economy through decades of mass immigration, war and economic collapse.
Finally, in the 1990’s, the Israeli government moved to nationalize health insurance and, almost overnight, control by the Histadrut was eradicated.
This gave way to Israel’s current market economy. Through the ups and downs of a journey from a socialist to a capitalist economy, Israel’s ability to innovate has paved the way to it having one of the top GDPs per capita in the world.

#israel #socialism #capitalism5 Surprising Differences Between Ashkenazi & Sephardic Jews | Big Jewish Ideas | UnpackedUnpacked2022-11-16 | New channel alert youtube.com/@todayunpacked
- Oftentimes, Jewish people depicted in the media typically appear to be of European descent, yet most Jews don’t fit into this category.
While the two largest groups of Jews in North America are Ashkenazi Jews from countries like Germany, France and Eastern Europe, and Sephardic Jews from Portugal and Spain, there are also Mizrahi Jews from the Middle East, Ethiopian Jews, and so many more across the globe.
Although there are many differences between these groups such as the languages they speak, the foods they eat, or even the Jewish customs and traditions they keep, they all share the core connection of Judaism and are a part of one peoplehood.

#Ashkenazi #Sephardic #JewsHow Did Israel Destroy Iraqs Nuclear Ambitions?Unpacked2022-11-09 | On the night before the holiday of Shavuot 1981, Prime Minister Menachem Begin shocked his cabinet by announcing they would be launching a surprise attack called “Operation Opera” on a nuclear reactor in Iraq, known as Osirak.
Should the operation fail, the lives of four million Israelis would be at risk, however Begin chose to go ahead with the plan. Despite the large criticism Israel faced in the aftermath, Operation Opera was successful in protecting Israel and preventing Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein from building nuclear weapons.

#Iraq #israel #warDid Jews Fight the Nazis during the Holocaust?Unpacked2022-11-02 | By the 1930’s, Jewish life had existed in Europe for over 2,000 years. Despite facing expulsion, persecution, and antisemitic rhetoric, Jews survived, sometimes through bribery for security or relocation to “safer” parts of Europe.
While this survival tactic served them for centuries, the Nazis rise to power was swift and calculated. Though historians who study this time period can theorize about where and how the tragic death of six million Jews could have occurred, hindsight is 20/20.
What the Jews of Europe endured was beyond their control. The reality is that there was nowhere to go, and escape was nearly impossible. With surrounding countries and borders closed to Jews, the pre-World War II European Jewish community of approximately nine million had only a tiny number of survivors to carry on Jewish tradition and continuity into the next generation.

#Holocaust #Jewish #antisemitismDid He Sell Jews to the Nazis in the Holocaust?Unpacked2022-10-26 | In January 1954, the Attorney General v. Gruenwald case AKA the Kasztner trial began. This was seemingly an open and shut libel case between an elderly Hungarian Jew and Israeli government official, Israel Rudolf Kasztner. However, when the story of the impossible choices Kastner faced at the hands of the Nazis came to light, Israel was in an uproar. Somehow, this seemingly straightforward trial sent the country reeling, causing a government fallout and led to one of Israel’s first political assassination.

#israel #Rudolfkastner #historyIs there a Jewish Messiah?Unpacked2022-10-19 | The Jewish concept of a Messiah, or Mashiach in Hebrew, has been discussed extensively by rabbis, philosophers, poets and even featured in Jewish prayer.
However, much like many other Jewish concepts, there are debates amongst Jews over what a messianic era is, how or when it will come about and how to help the Messiah arrive. Despite these debates, the belief in Mashiach is a fundamental ideal that has been passed down for generations and has created a cohesive peoplehood of Jews, bonded over a shared history and belief of a shared, peaceful future.

#Peoplehood #Messiah #TikkunOlamWas the IDF Responsible for the Death of Palestinians?Unpacked2022-10-12 | After a horrific attack on an Israeli family by a Lebanese teenager working with the Palestine Liberation Front (a faction of the PLO) in 1979, Israel looked for an ally to help create a secure buffer zone between Israel and Lebanon.
However, working with the President-elect of Lebanon, Bashir Gemayel, proved to have deadly consequences. His paramilitary group, the Phalangists massacred between 800 and 2,000 people in two Palestinian refugee camps called Sabra and Shatila.
With the world in an uproar over the horrific news of this event, all fingers pointed blame towards Israel. Although the IDF entered Lebanon to stop the PLO’s terror, Israel accepted responsibility for the part they played in the dark story of Sabra and Shatila.

#terrorism #israel #lebanonWho Were the Black Panthers in Israel?Unpacked2022-10-06 | The integration of Mizrahi Jews into Israel was not an easy one. Jews from countries like Yemen, Morocco, Iraq, Egypt, and Syria had lived there for generations and after much oppression found themselves running for their lives to Israel.
Enraged by the inequality they faced in their new home, a group of Mizrahi Jews took inspiration from the Black Panthers movement in the United States.
The Israeli Black Panthers, HaPanterim HaShchorim, who emerged from this painful time period fought for systematic change and their impact is still felt in Israeli society today.

#blackpanthers #israel #mizrahiWho Are The Mizrahi Jews? | The Jewish Story | UnpackedUnpacked2022-09-28 | In the second century CE, the Romans exiled the Jews of Judea and created a far flung diaspora which saw many Jews make their way to Europe, Asia and North Africa. Those who ended up in the East in countries like Iraq, Iran, and Syria and in North African countries like Egypt, Morocco and Tunisia would later become known as Mizrahi Jews.
Mizrahi Jews often prospered under Muslim rule in these countries, however by the twentieth century, as Nazi ideology spread to the Middle East, they found themselves facing violent attacks from their once peaceful neighbors.
By the mid-twentieth century, Mizrahi Jews were in desperate need of a safe haven. From 1948 to 1972, nearly 600,000 immigrated to Israel alongside other Jewish refugees from around the world. Though they faced a difficult transition and discrimination in their new home, Israel today is known for its richly-integrated Mizrahi culture.

Despite retaliation from the Israel Defense Forces, Hezbollah’s power continues to grow and remains a serious threat to Israeli lives; a fact which will remain until true peace is found between Israel and Lebanon.

#hezbollah #israel #jihadWhy were Jews Murdered in the Hebron Riots Massacre?Unpacked2022-09-14 | In the summer of 1929, the British-controlled region of Palestine saw growing fault lines between Arabs and Jews. Tensions rose until they erupted one fateful day. In the city of Hebron a riot quickly turned into a gruesome massacre, and in a mere two hours, 67 Jews were murdered. The Hebron Riots were the catalyst for the week of terror that followed. In total 133 Jews and 116 Arabs were killed and most peaceful Jewish-Arab coexistence came to an unfortunate end.

#History #Israel #hebronIs Judaism a Religion?Unpacked2022-09-07 | Throughout the ages, people have debated whether Judaism is a religion, a culture, or a nationality…and where Israel fits into the mix. In fact, the Jewish experience encompasses all of these. While different denominations such as Reform, Modern Orthodox, or Haredi Jews may focus on different elements to define how they relate to their Judaism, there is a shared understanding that despite these differences, Jews still make up one Peoplehood based on so much more than just religion.

#Peoplehood #Judaism #ZionismThe Secret Agreement That Shaped the Middle East | History of Israel Explained | UnpackedUnpacked2022-08-31 | It was 1916 and World War I was raging. Countries were fighting for resources, land and power and the Ottoman Empire was on its deathbed.
With all eyes on the Empire’s territories, the secretive Sykes-Picot agreement was created to decide who would get control over what would become Syria, Lebanon, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, and Iraq, as well as parts of future Saudi Arabia and Turkey.
However, in 1920, representatives at the San Remo Conference tossed these secret plans out in favor of “mandates'' AKA territory temporarily governed by an Allied power. This led to the British Mandate over Palestine, and the eventual establishment of Israel as a legal national home for the Jewish people.

#jihad #Israel #JewishDid Jews Always Support Israel? | Big Jewish Ideas | UnpackedUnpacked2022-08-24 | In the late 1800s, rising antisemitism had people concerned that Judaism would disappear entirely. Two very different solutions arose in an attempt to solve this crisis: Reform Judaism and Zionism.
Reform Judaism aimed to emphasize more universal Jewish values rather than rituals in an attempt to better integrate with non-Jews. Zionism focused on the desire for Jews to re-enter the world stage as their own people in a Jewish state.
Eventually, after the horrors of the Holocaust, the Reform movement recognized the need for Zionism and moved to support it. Today, Jews both in and out of Israel have different and often polar opposite views about how to be Jewish, yet they remain part of the same peoplehood focused on Jewish continuity.

#Reform #Judaism #ZionismThe Shocking Story of Jews Murdered in KishinevUnpacked2022-08-17 | When two young Christians were murdered in Kishinev, the heart of Moldova, in 1903, popular journalist Peva Krushevanl seized the opportunity to blame the Jews for their deaths.
Using his daily newspaper as a personal soapbox, he riled up thousands of Kishinev’s civilians to take revenge against the Jews in a deadly pogrom which killed 49 people.
This attack inspired Jewish poet Chaim Nachman Bialik to publish works to awaken the Jewish spirit and successfully invoked Jews across the world to take action against the rampant antisemitism in Europe.

#History #Israel #JewishWhen the Jewish State was Almost in Uganda | History of Israel Explained | UnpackedUnpacked2022-08-10 | Upon witnessing the danger and suffering Jews were experiencing from rampant antisemitism, Theodor Herzl proposed a temporary safe haven in Uganda. However, a Jewish homeland in East Africa was heavily opposed by the Zionist Congress.
After much debate, the Seventh Zionist Congress decided against executing the Uganda Plan and Herzl focused his efforts on aiding the future establishment of a Jewish state elsewhere. Fifty years later, Israel was established, keeping the Jewish state in a place rich with Jewish history, rather than merely a place of physical safety.

- Antisemitic tropes about Jewish wealth have been around for centuries. While there are some truly wild conspiracy theories out there it does beg the question…are Jews rich?
While not ALL Jews are rich, Jewish people are still statistically overrepresented among the wealthy. This may be due to the overall Jewish value of education and a gravitation towards more urban environments where there are greater opportunities for economic advancement.
Historically, Jews have experienced periods of great economic instability, yet the challenges they have faced have created a culture of resilience and entrepreneurial perseverance still evident today.

Following the brutal events of World War Two, Jews in the Soviet Union attempted to escape their dire situation by applying for immigration to Israel. Unfortunately, these attempts were blocked by leader of the U.S.S.R, Joseph Stalin.
Enraged by the many injustices they faced, Jewish activists like Anatoly Shcharansky (later, Natan Sharansky) fought to help free the Jews of the Soviet Union, and in turn propelled the movement that successfully dissolved the Soviet Union in 1991.

#jewish #refuseniks #russia5 Elections, 3 Years: Inside Israels Knesset | Zionism Revisited | UnpackedUnpacked2022-07-06 | Israeli democracy is anything but simple. In fact, this fall, Israel will be undergoing a fifth election in three years.
In the early days of establishment, the young Zionist leaders knew that building a consensus was crucial for building Israel. However, each representative debated over how to establish a governmental system.
As many groups worked together to create democracy, the Knesset, Israel's parliament was born. This diverse government, while a bit chaotic, encourages members to be pragmatic and collaborate to support its people.

#knesset #Israelelections #zionismA Jewish American Tale | The Jewish Story | UnpackedUnpacked2022-06-29 | Jewish life in early 20th century America meant a constant question of identity. At a time when being an immigrant was far from celebrated, young Jews worked to free themselves from the “old country” traditions of their immigrant parents.
This all came to a head when the world witnessed the horrors of the Holocaust. Suddenly, progressive American Jews needed to decide what was more important: their American values or the suffering of fellow Jews across the world.
As Jews learned to balance the American dream with traditional Jewish values, a rich cultural diversity began to develop which has led to the great impact Jews have had on the United States until today.

#americanjews #americandream #ww2What Life Is Like On An Israeli Kibbutz | Zionism Revisited | UnpackedUnpacked2022-06-22 | In 1909 when young Jews founded the first Kibbutz, they had no idea that they would be forming a symbol of Israel’s rebirth. These agricultural communities innovated the communal experience as an experiment in Democratic Socialism.
Jews from all over the world came to Israel in an attempt to find their identity and participate in advancing the country agriculturally, industrially and socially.
Over time, as individualism grew, kibbutzim have changed and adapted in order to thrive and yet, the kibbutz movement will forever be known for shaping Israel as it is today.

#kibbutz #Israel #zionismThe Other Herzl: The Legacy of Rav Kook | Great Jewish Heroes | UnpackedUnpacked2022-06-15 | In the early days of Zionism, the front-runners of the movement were largely secular Jews, many of whom were staunchly anti-religious.
This all changed with Rabbi Abraham Isaac Kook, who is accredited with shaping religious Zionism as it’s still known today.
Born in Latvia in 1865, the young Talmudic prodigy had a love of speaking Hebrew and felt a deep mystical connection to both God and the Jewish homeland.
When Rav Kook came to the Land of Israel in 1904, he became Chief Rabbi of Jaffa. He saw the divide between secular and religious Jews and worked towards bridging the gap between them. He furthered that mission as the first Ashkenazi “Chief Rabbi of Eretz Yisrael” from 1921 to 1935.
Today, 90 years after his death, Rav Kook’s teachings continue to shape religious Zionism and inspire millions to love the people and the land of Israel.

With immigration of Jews from all around the world placing a massive burden on the economy, and the constant threat of terror looming from neighboring countries, Israel’s leaders struggled to find solutions to ensure its existence.
Thanks to the financial help of German reparations, Israeli agricultural innovation and land deal negotiations with Egypt, Israel rose above these struggles and found the footing it needed to thrive.

#birthright #taglit #israelCan Americans Be Patriots and Zionists? The Louis Brandeis Story | Great Jewish Heroes | UnpackedUnpacked2022-05-18 | The first Jewish U.S. Supreme Court Justice, Louis Brandeis, was born in 1865 in Louisville, Kentucky to Jewish German immigrants. Brandeis grew up assimilated into American life and knew more about his German roots than his Jewish ones.
Graduating first in his class from Harvard Law at the age of 20, Brandeis worked as a lawyer and was a leading reformer, fighting against poverty and injustice and defending equality and workers’ rights.
While defending Jewish workers, Brandeis connected with his own Jewish heritage. Upon learning about Theodor Herzl’s call for a Jewish state in response to antisemitism and assimilation, Brandeis began to rally Jewish Americans around Zionism and support for Israel.
Though asked to lead the American Zionist Movement, Brandeis instead chose to be an advocate for Zionism and American Jews by becoming a supreme court justice and remained a vocal supporter of Jewish dual loyalty.

#Supremecourt #LouisBrandeis #JewishShould Jews Support Ukraine? | UnpackedUnpacked2022-05-11 | Despite Ukraine having a Jewish president, some Jews are conflicted about aiding the ongoing crisis due to the complex history of Ukrainian Jewry.
In the tenth century, Ukrainian Jews lived in relative peace, working as middlemen between peasants and the nobility. However, in the fifteenth century, Bogdan Chmielnicki, now considered a Ukrainian hero, brutally slaughtered tens of thousands of Jews.
In the years following the Chmielnicki massacre peace returned and Jews flourished. Jews and Ukrainians lived side by side, sharing both language and recipes that are still used today.
In the seventeenth century, Eastern Ukraine was absorbed by Russia and Jews suffered once more from pogroms, antisemitism and forced assimilation. Pogroms continued into the twentieth century, despite Jews taking part in the founding of Ukraine’s first attempt at a modern country in 1917.
Despite the atrocities Ukraine participated in during the Holocaust, Jews and Ukrainians found a middle ground once more in the 1960s and onward, even joining forces to free Ukraine from Soviet rule.
Today, while antisemitism still exists in Ukraine, so do flourishing Jewish communities and in 2019 Ukraine elected its first Jewish president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Subscribe and turn on your notifications so you don’t miss future uploads! youtube.com/UNPACKED?sub_confirmation=1

#Ukraine #Jews #Zelensky1948: Israels Battle for Independence | The Jewish Story | UnpackedUnpacked2022-05-04 | Three years after the Holocaust and the devastating loss of six million Jews, Jewish refugees were desperately trying to immigrate to Israel. However, then British-mandated Palestine had extreme limits on Jewish immigration.
Head of the Jewish Agency, David Ben-Gurion attempted to work with the British to appeal this policy. Though unsuccessful in this approach, the 1947 UN-created resolution 181, which called for a partitioned two-state solution, changed everything.
Rejecting the resolution, Arabs rioted throughout the country. Battles broke out between Jews and Arabs and several thousand lives were lost. In the aftermath, the British withdrew from the country on May 15th 1948.
Later that day, David Ben-Gurion declared the establishment of the State of Israel leading the surrounding Arab countries to attack Israel on all sides. Against all odds, the Jews held onto their land and Israel’s war for independence ended with the UN officially recognizing the State of Israel, the Jewish homeland.

#Jewish #Heroes #GoldaWhy Israels Ukraine Refugee Policy is so Controversial | UnpackedUnpacked2022-04-13 | Since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, thousands of people have fled their homes, sparking an international conversation surrounding refugee absorption into other countries. One of the countries debating the issue is Israel, a country where refugee absorption is part of the national discourse.
With Ukraine being the world’s fifth-largest Jewish community, many Ukrainian Jews have sought asylum in Israel. Under Israel’s Law of Return, anyone with a Jewish grandparent can automatically receive citizenship to Israel. However, not all Ukrainian refugees who have arrived in Israel are eligible for citizenship.
While Israel has always been a safe haven for Jews, should that apply to non-Jewish refugees too?

#Ukraine #Israel #RefugeesWW2: The Emergence of Nazism and the Holocaust | The Jewish Story | UnpackedUnpacked2022-04-06 | Despite facing antisemitism in the 1920s and 1930s, European Jews, especially those in Germany, lived well as integral members of society. However, that all changed when a fringe political movement rose to power.
The National Socialist German Workers’ Party (Nazi Party) and their leader, Adolf Hitler, vowed to annihilate all Jews, whom they viewed as “parasites”. By the end of World War II, some six million Jews and five million others had been murdered at the hands of the Nazis and their supporters.
The effects of the atrocities of the Holocaust are still felt today by Jews around the world, and Jewish communities have worked tirelessly to educate the world about these horrors so that they never happen again.

With World War I raging and the Jews of the Land of Israel, greatly suffering under Ottoman rule, Weizmann petitioned the British and persuaded many, including Winston Churchill, of the urgency to declare Israel as the Jewish homeland.
On October 31, 1917, Herzl’s dream came closer to realization when the British parliament expressed Britain's official support of a Jewish homeland in Palestine through the Balfour Declaration.

#UnitedHatzalah #emergencymedicalservice #IsraelThe True Origins of Modern Zionism | The Jewish Story | UnpackedUnpacked2022-03-09 | While the State of Israel is barely 75 years old, the origins of Zionism actually go back a lot further than one might think. In fact, Zionism was born at three distinct moments in history that all contributed to Zionism as the world knows it today.
The first story of Zionism dates back thousands of years ago starting with Abraham in biblical times. This paved the way for the modern movements of 200 years ago during the Enlightenment and 125 years ago when the first political Zionist movement was created.
Each of these occurrences shared the same dream for the Jewish people to be recognized as a sovereign nation in their homeland, Israel.

- Jews have lived in the United States since 1654 — before the states were even united — when twenty-three Sephardic settlers fled to New Amsterdam. Today, the Jewish population of America stands at 7.5 million.
Overcoming brutal sweatshop conditions, assimilationist pressure, antisemitic regulations and even lynchings, American Jews have helped positively shift the country’s politics and economics. Though they weren’t always welcomed with open arms, and despite the challenges they have faced over time, American Jews have flourished in what is now home to the world’s second largest community of Jews.

#AmericanJews #jewish #antisemitismWhat Were The Crown Heights Riots? | UnpackedUnpacked2022-02-13 | Despite strong ties in the years after the civil rights movement, the relationship between the Black and Jewish communities of Brooklyn began to deteriorate. Three decades later, the tension between these two groups came to a head during the Crown Heights riots of 1991.

#CrownHeightsRiots #civilrights #UnpackedWhy Amnesty Internationals Claim of Apartheid in Israel is Dangerous | UnpackedUnpacked2022-02-09 | On February 1st, Amnesty International published a report titled "Israel’s apartheid against Palestinians: Cruel system of domination and crime against humanity.” Unlike healthy criticism of Israel that offers space for dialogue, this claim is problematic. The report doesn't allow for a nuanced breakdown of the situation. The claim is also dangerous in that this accusation puts Jewish communities at risk during this time of rising antisemitism. Mislabeling Israel as an apartheid state won’t actually move the needle on this age-old conflict.

#AmnestyInternational #apartheid #IsraelCivil Rights Stories Youve Never Heard About | UnpackedUnpacked2022-02-06 | The Black community continued to face discrimination under the racist Jim Crow laws in the South which led to the civil rights movement. Jews across the United States, by overwhelming majority, joined the cause to end segregation and supported the civil rights cause. The partnership between the communities was, in some ways, epitomized by the little-known story of Esther Swirk Brown, a Jewish homemaker from Kansas City, and her legal crusade to end school segregation

#MartinLutherKingJr #civilrights #UnpackedThe Unknown Connection Between Black and Jewish Communities in America | UnpackedUnpacked2022-01-30 | The end of the nineteenth century found Black and Jewish communities in America living side by side, both facing discrimination from the white Protestant majority. Conflict and shifting in power structures brought on feelings of racism and antisemitism between the two groups, yet the horrors of World War II and the Holocaust would unite the communities around an unlikely cause: Zionism.

#civilrights #zionism #UnpackedThe Rise and Fall of Jews in the Ottoman Empire | The Jewish Story | UnpackedUnpacked2022-01-26 | Fleeing the massacres and forced conversions of Christian Europe in the Middle Ages, tens of thousands of Jews found a new safe haven in the Ottoman Empire. For the next few centuries, the Muslim-run empire became home for Ashkenazi and Sephardic Jews alike. Though relegated to second-class citizens called “dhimmis,” Jews brought with them useful skills in medicine, finance and trade, and flourished.
However, over time the Ottoman Empire began to crumble. Once more, the Jews faced antisemitism and suffered from poverty and violence. By the end of the 19th century, it was clear that the safe haven of the Ottoman Empire was no longer safe. Over the first half of the 20th century, the empire had collapsed and Jews fled to Israel, America and France in the hopes of finding the safety and prosperity they had had in the Muslim world.

In countries like China and India, the vast network of Jewish traders shaped the path for the wide spread of diverse Jewish communities.
In the 12th century, Jews settled across China in places like Kaifeng, a city on the Silk Road. Trading between China and the West meant Jewish traders could keep up with the global Jewish community while maintaining a place in Chinese society. Though the community thrived for centuries, over time the Kaifeng Jews have largely assimilated and roughly 1,000 members are left in the community today.
In India, the two largest Jewish communities were Cochin Jews and Bene Israel. Cochin Jews arrived as far back as the 1st century through the Roman-Indian trade system, while Bene Israel was started by a group of Jewish traders who settled after being shipwrecked on the coast of Maharashtra, India. As time went on, these communities grew, joined by Jewish traders from Portugal as well as those fleeing persecution from Ottoman Iraq.
Following Israel and India’s independence from British control, most of India’s 25,000 Jews immigrated to Israel, joined by many Jews across Asia. Despite this, both India and China have seen new Jewish arrivals in the 20th and 21st centuries leading to the continued diversity of widespread Jewish communities in the Diaspora.
