Back in 2008, Marc Centanni began taking guitar lessons from former Shadow Gallery axe-man/keyboardist/background singer Gary Wehrkamp. Centanni was something of a writer, and a poet, with an interest in religion.He showed some of his work to Wehrkamp, who was suitably impressed. He decided to put the words to music, just to see what would happen.Neither man could have imagined that it would take so long for the project to come to fruition. Life provided challenges. Wehrkamp’s home and studio were destroyed by fire—although the Harpazo tapes were saved. Covid put things on hold. The pair were continually refining the work, changing words, trying new instrumentation, and looking for a goal that they weren’t quite sure existed.But it did. Harpazo – which basically translates to the biblical Rapture – comes out with the album “The Crucible” today (June 28). The final story, as Wehrkamp and Centanni told our contributor Mark Boardman, is a bit of a mashup. There are many references to the Bible’s Book of Revelation, with an anti-Christ figure and an ending of redemption and salvation. But it also has touches of AI, cyber tech, and more. Wehrkamp’s music—most of which he performed, with the help of several guest vocalists and instrumentalists—drives the Rock Opera to greater and greater heights.The conversation also touched on the nature of faith and how the project brought each of them into a deeper understanding of and relationship with God. Slowly but surely, Rufus started to learn basic chords and to play grunge songs, which to this day are a massive influence on his work.Rufus joined Sting's band for a few tours and split the six-string duties with his father on many shows. This move kept him on his toes every night, with Sting pushing the envelope and challenging his band to change bits and pieces of songs from one show to the next. He is determined to carve his own path though, and released his first solo album, "Pop Skull", in 2018.Rufus' sophomore effort, 2020's "Make It", is an evolutionary quantum leap: more cohesive, with stronger songs and a bigger sense of how he wants his career to progress. GLEN BENTON On DEICIDE’s “Banished By Sin”: “I Don’t Do It For The Money, But For The Respect /Fans” Sonic Perspectives 2024-04-19 | Pondering the definition of darkness and evil might be a daunting task for most, but for death metal pioneer and Deicide frontman Glen Benton, it’s just another day at the office. Originally cutting his teeth in the local Florida metal scene in the mid-80s, he would garner a reputation as the guy who scared everybody’s girlfriend off at the local show upon assuming vocal duties and becoming one of the key figures in the formulation of the signature guttural style that has since become the death metal standard.But it would be his fateful union with drummer Steve Asheim and the Hoffman brothers, then under the moniker of Amon, that his prowess as a bassist and his unique vocal approach would find a welcome home in which to develop and ultimately shine its morbid darkness beyond the confines of Florida.Following the name change and the subsequent unholy quadrilogy of classic studio albums with iconic engineer Scott Burns at the controls in the eponymous debut, "Legion", "Once Upon The Cross" and "Serpents Of The Light" respectively; the stylistic direction of Deicide would become a bit more fluid, and with it some chaos in the original lineup. Following a partial return to form on 2004’s "Scars Of The Crucifix" and the subsequent departure of the Hoffman brothers from the fold, a different yet equally ferocious Deicide would emerge with the entry of ex-Cannibal Corpse guitarist Jack Owen and especially shred maestro Ralph Santolla to the fold, unleashing arguably the most consequential post-90s death metal offering in "The Stench Of Redemption" and kicking off the present era of the band.The road since has naturally had its fair share of additional bumps and detours, but no one could suggest that at any point Glen, Steve, and company would ever compromise their principles or stray too far from the sound that has come to be associated with the Deicide name. That being said, the recent resurgence of interest in the primordial era of the band and particularly their 1992 sophomore opus "Legion" would lead the band to revisit the album while on the road following the loosening of Covid restrictions.One wouldn’t be too far off base to conclude that this eventuality rekindled this fold’s interest in their own roots, thus having a heavy impact on the highly old-school character of their 13th and latest studio LP "Banished By Sin". Very much a multifaceted affair, this soon-to-be-released opus carries with it the stylistic hallmarks of not only "Legion," but just about every Deicide entry from the beginning up until the present to some degree, though the aforementioned sophomore album is pretty heavily favored in this entry’s overall execution and tone.Though some may have the impression of Glen Benton being a demonic sorcerer who simply sprang from a flaming hole in the ground of Florida in 1990, the man himself is very much a good-humored and affable fellow by every definition. Jonathan Smith was honored to catch up with this key figure in death metal’s genesis and development to discuss the soon-to-be-released Deicide album "Banished By Sin," as well as the upcoming tour in support of the album, the road that brought the band to this point, and even Glen’s take on the current music scene. Even the story of Deicide initially being invited to and ultimately declining to take part in the filming of the iconic scene from Ace Ventura: Pet Detective that ultimately went Cannibal Corpse was a topic of discussion. DAVID VINCENT On VLTIMAS New Album “Epic”: “We Put A Lot Of Blood, Sweat & Tears Into This Record” Sonic Perspectives 2024-02-01 | When considering the origin of death metal, and especially its early development in Tampa, Florida; few can claim to have made such a consequential impact as that of Morbid Angel. What has since come to be known as the dreary, dissonant aesthetic that truly separated this sub-genre of extreme metal from its thrash metal roots can be traced to the chaotic blend of sludgy riffs and frenzied guitar soloing, blast-happy drum work, and most especially the deep and forbidding voice that would unleash the uncanny opus of darkness that was “Altars Of Madness” upon the masses in the late 80s. Indeed, one could argue that David Vincent’s blend of abyssal growls and harrowing bass vocalizations set the standard by which death metal came to be known as the 90s rolled in, and consequently, a trail of auspiciousness would surely follow his voice wherever it may choose to hang its proverbial hat.Though the band that originally accompanied Vincent on his rise to underground fame on college radio, MTV’s Headbanger’s Ball and Beyond is now several years in the rearview for a second time, this Charlotte, North Carolina native has continued blazing trails, with his most recent project being the textbook definition of a power trio and supergroup rolled into one dubbed Vltimas. Conceived in the mid-2010s and bringing on board the colossal talents of former Mayhem and longtime Aura Noir guitarist Rune “Blasphemer” Eriksen and virtuoso drummer of Cryptopsy fame Flo Mounier, this newly codified fold would unleash a torrential downpour of blackened death via their 2019 debut Something Wicked Marches In, mixing elements of each member’s prior endeavors into a vicious witch’s brew of sonic carnage that would make a respectable splash despite its marketing and corresponding tour being stymied by the subsequent Covid lockdowns.Now nearly five years to the day that this union of the extreme metal elite first broke into the market, an aptly named follow-up dubbed “Epic” promises to shake the pillars of the earth again on March 15th. The same blend of Northern European frost, Canadian brutality, and old-school Florida mystique has been maintained and further augmented with an even more ambitious songwriting approach that further explores the sonic possibilities of Rune’s mastery of the six-string and David’s Wagnerian vocal persona, to speak nothing for the precision-based frenzy of percussion gymnastic that always follows Mounier’s involvement. Along for the ride in a studio capacity is live bassist turned permanent member Ype Terwisscha van Scheltinga as Vincent has opted to focus solely on vocals in this project, as well as live second guitarist Jaoa Duarte to further fill out the arrangement. In every respect, Vltimas has proven to be far from a one-off side project for those involved and promises to be the full package on stage in the coming months.While some might have the image of an immortal titan born from the underworld in their heads based on his stage and studio performances, David Vincent is among the most approachable and candid of individuals to reign within the Lovecraftian limelight. TOM WARRIOR On Live Album “Resurrection Of The Flesh: “We Tried To Be True To What HELLHAMMER Was” Sonic Perspectives 2023-11-02 | Retracing where the primordial, hard rock adjacent origins of heavy metal ended and its more extreme cousin began is a fairly subjective and complex proposition, and few are more qualified to do so than one of the latter musical movement’s proverbial founding fathers Thomas Gabriel Fischer, better known to the masses today as Thomas G. Warrior. As the guitarist and one of the principle vocalists of early 80s death metal trailblazers Hellhammer, his career stood at a crossroads between the gritty yet still hard rock oriented world of Black Sabbath and Motörhead and the slightly nastier and darker NWOBHM associated stylings of Venom, helping to pave the way for the eventual the more extreme expressions of thrash, death, black and even sludge metal on both sides of the Atlantic. Even in a 2023 context, the iconic riffs and sepulchral subjects that burst forth from this underground trio’s small smattering of demos alongside an EP and a single still hold up and speak to a vision that was well ahead of its time.Yet behind these lofty accomplishments is a man who has a humbler take on things, recounting a band that simply made music on their own terms, bucking every trend during their relatively short run in the 80s and often being seen as outcasts in their home nation of Switzerland. Thomas often recounts playing shows in small venues to maybe 10 or more onlookers as a frequent occurrence during Hellhammer’s run from 1982 to 1984, as well as being at the receiving end of numerous jokes due to the unorthodox nature of what they were bringing to the table. Even upon the dissolution of the band and the formation of the more polished and refined Celtic Frost, this marginalized artist and his musical cohorts would ultimately seek greener pastures in Germany for label support and an audience. But there remains an unmistakable mystique surrounding the small and lo-fi catalog connect to the Hellhammer name that has continued to inspire many, including The Warrior himself as his spin-off/tribute to the original band Triumph Of Death embarks on further touring since their 2018 inception.In stark contrast to the arguably sloppy and amateur character of the source material, there is an air of professionalism surrounding Triumph Of Death’s approach to recreating the Hellhammer sound in a live setting. Thomas credits some of this to his growth as a musician over the past 40 years, as well as to the highly competent group of musicians that round out the fold, consisting of drummer Tim Iso Wey, bassist Jamie Lee Cussigh, and particularly the addition of guitarist/vocalist Andre Matheiu, resulting in an arrangement that is markedly fuller and larger in scope than the power trio format of the original. In many ways, Fischer considers it a different band due to the greater professionalism that has resulted from the aforementioned factors, yet he stresses in no uncertain terms that the primary goal of the band is to faithfully recreate what Hellhammer originally set out to do. It is a sound that could be likened to what Hellhammer might have sounded like had they rerecorded their work during the early 90s death metal explosion in Florida and Sweden and then adding crowd noise for good measure.Though a man that is often surrounded in a dark cloud of moribund mystery in the media and prone to sardonic humor, Thomas G. Warrior retains his affable qualities and continually proves a veritable wellspring of knowledge on how things were in the days when metal was considered the most dangerous music around. Our contributor Jonathan Smith caught up with the iconic guitarist and vocalist to discuss Hellhammer’s place in metal history, and among other things settling the longstanding dispute as to whether the death, thrash, black, speed or sludge metal sub-genres could truly lay claim to their legacy (Tom decisively places his band’s pioneering work in the death metal camp, while acknowledging the massive changes the style has gone through in the years since). TREVOR RABIN Discusses His First Vocal Solo Album In 34 Years, Plus Stories Of YES, ARW And More! Sonic Perspectives 2023-10-04 | Long before he joined Yes, Trevor Rabin was a superstar in his native South Africa with the band Rabbit. Moving to London and eventually to Los Angeles in order to break out to a wider audience, it was several years and solo albums before the pieces came together to form a new band Cinema with Chris Squire, Alan White and Tony Kaye. When Jon Anderson entered the picture, the pressure from record execs to recapture the Yes name was too great, and Rabin found his new band had morphed into an old band, albeit a re-invented version. Several chart-topping hits later, Rabin was seen by many as the man who had saved Yes in the 80s, but his ambitions continued to progress. Starting in the 90s, Rabin would switch careers to scoring Hollywood blockbuster film soundtracks, a world which consumed him for decades. Aside from a brief pause to record the instrumental genre-hopping “Jacaranda”, Rabin didn’t dabble in the rock world much until 2016’s reunion with Jon Anderson and Rick Wakeman for a series of live shows featuring Yes music. 200 concerts later, Rabin’s voice and fingers were primed to record his first solo rock album since 1989’s “Can’t Look Away”. The resulting album “Rio” is jam packed with fretboard frenzy, multi-tracked harmony vocals, masterful production and an extremely diverse range of styles. It’s a wonderful release, both a return to form and a stab at breaking new ground all at once. MIKE MANGINI Discusses Diverse Creative Approach On His Upcoming Solo Album “Invisible Signs” Sonic Perspectives 2023-10-03 | Michael Anthony Mangini started playing drums when he was two and a half years old, inspired by Ringo Starr. Although he quickly became very proficient in his instrument, he put it aside for a few years, to pursue a computer science major at Bentley University. It would take him a few years to get his big break into the mainstream, and that came in 1991, when he joined the prestigious Canadian thrash metal band Annihilator.Following a tour cycle with Annihilator, Mangini played with hard rockers Extreme and spent a few years in Steve Vai’s band, having appeared on the studio albums “Fire Garden” and “The Ultra Zone”, and in the live album “Alive in an Ultra World”. In 2005, he accepted a full-time teaching position at the Berklee College of Music in the Percussion Department, but five years later his career would literally undergo "a dramatic turn of events". He was selected to join Dream Theater in 2010, after an audition that also included Marco Minneman (The Aristocrats), Virgil Donati (Planet X), Aquiles Priester (Angra, Hangar), Peter Wildoer (Darkane, James LaBrie), Derek Roddy (Hate Eternal, Nile, Today Is The Day) and Thomas Lang (Glenn Hughes, Stork among others).With Dream Theater, Mike has released five studio albums so far, and recently completed a successful run of shows with Animals as Leaders and Devin Townsend. As the end of 2023 approaches, he’s ready for his most ambitious musical step to date – the release of his first solo album, “Invisible Signs”. The twelve songs on the album showcase a different side of Mike’s musical abilities, with a modern metal edge and perhaps a more straightforward approach to drums than the average Dream Theater fan is used to. Having just released a live album with acclaimed keyboard player Derek Sherinian, he relentlessly continues to work as a producer, a session musician, and a band leader.Having started his career in 1969, Simon has worked with Jeff Beck, Gary Moore, Michael Schenker, Judas Priest, Tears for Fears, and Pete Townsend, among others. Perhaps he’s best known for his tenures with The Who and Toto, but a closer look reveals a wide array of collaborations and styles in his extensive discography. Last year saw the release of Protocol V, a jazz-fusion collaboration that had many members in its history, but with Simon as a constant. More recently, he played drums on the self-titled debut of the supergroup Kings of Mercia, and on Steve Lukather’s solo album “Bridges”.When it comes to “Sherinian/Phillips Live”, the album solidifies the collaboration between the two musicians, which has grown stronger since 2020. They have collaborated before, on albums such as 2001’s “Inertia”, 2004’s “Mythology” and more, and recruited Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal on guitar and Ric Fierabracci on bass for a night of multiple notes, many time signatures, and unexpected changes. Fans will have plenty of chances to say farewell to front-man Kevin Martin & and his gang, as the band has embarked on “The Long Goodbye” tour in the US. An album of the same name was just released - "The Long Goodbye", last August 25 via Round Hill Records. The LP's first single, "Punks", is a cautionary message to young bands that they won't be the hot new thing forever.In addition to "Punks", the 10-track collection, which Don Miggs produced, includes the sneering statement of independence "What Do You Need?”, co-written by Nick Brown of the alt-rock band Mona, who also appears on the track, and the moody, atmospheric "Elegante", where Kevin dives headlong into creative wordplay as Miggs and the band mimics a synth-pop vibe with guitars and drums. Elsewhere is the acoustic "Maze" and "Cellphone Jesus", where Kevin allows some of his worldview to seep in as he searches for a sign from above of a damaged society.Candlebox rose to fame after releasing their self-titled debut album in July 1993. The band's sophomore album, “Lucy” (1995), tweaked their sound and was certified gold, and was followed three years later by “Happy Pills” (1998). Troubles with the record company prompted a breakup in 2000, but the band reunited in 2006. While 30 or 40 years ago musicians focused on the one band they were a part of, nowadays having a side project is almost mandatory. The revenue streams are different, file sharing and instant messaging allows for multiple music outlets for anyone, so it’s natural that gifted players decide to explore multiple musical avenues.Volbeat’s Michael Poulsen dedicated over 20 years of his career to bringing the band to the status they have today. Releasing eight full-lengths, selling millions of albums, and filling stadiums worldwide was his only priority, and it comes as no surprise that they reached an incredible popularity across the globe. The combination of Elvis-style melodies and thrash metal riffs is unique, and they deserve every accolade they can get. However, the seeds of death metal were always there lingering in Michael’s brain, and finally a return to his roots is in order.Before fronting Volbeat, Poulsen formed death metal band Dominus, which recorded four fast, brutal albums in the mid ‘90s. When he was putting together songs for Volbeat’s 2021 album, "Servant of the Mind", he wrote a bunch of death metal riffs and saved them on his hard drive. When he was done with the Volbeat record, he reopened the rusty gates to Armageddon and started putting together songs for his new death metal band Asinhell, whose debut album "Impii Hora" (Latin for Ungodly Hour), is a tribute to Poulsen’s favorite old-school groups. The songs are rooted in crushing riffs yet injected with strong guitar hooks and shout-along refrains.From the opening cut, “Fall of the Loyal Warrior,” to the last song “Foj for Helvede”, Poulsen professes his love for bands like Death, Entombed, Bolt Thrower, Autopsy, Dismember, Grave, Mercyful Fate, Possessed, and other old-school acts. While he is proud to wear his influences on his sleeves, Asinhell developed its own identity. MAURIZIO IACONO of KATAKLYSM: Its All About Being Consistent and Using Music In A Therapeutic Way Sonic Perspectives 2023-07-22 | Some bands just take consistency to the next level. That is definitely the case with death metal stalwarts Kataklysm. Originally formed in Quebec, they have put out one album every two years since their debut, 1995's "Sorcery". The band went through some lineup changes, the most notable of which was the departure of founding member and lead vocalist Sylvain Houde in 1998. As a result of that, their bass player, Maurizio Iacono, took on vocal duties, and they brought in Stephane Barbe to take care of the four strings. The core of the band is completed by guitarist Jean-François Dagenais. The hot seat in the band is the drum stool, and currently, the skin-beating duties are being handled by James Payne, who joined in 2020.Lineup changes, COVID, touring challenges, changes in the music landscape…nothing seems to stop Kataklysm, and their fan base has increased with every new release. August 11th brings yet another offering from the band, the highly anticipated “Goliath”. Released under the Nuclear Blast Label, it utilizes metaphors of war, mythological creatures, and revenge to discuss current affairs and personal issues such as censorship, government control, summoning your powers in the face of adversity, and many other subjects. The mixing is perfectly done, and the listener can appropriately enjoy every little detail and every instrument, which is heard loud and clear. A rare feat for a death metal band, and even more so when you realize you can properly hear all the lyrics.Kataklysm’s front-man Maurizio Iacono is a busy man. CHARLIE THORPE Of MALEVOLENCE: “Our Album Malicious Intent Really Put Us On The Map” Sonic Perspectives 2023-07-07 | Sheffield's MALEVOLENCE are among the UK's fastest rising metal outfits, and they seem determined to continue their upward trajectory. Having just finished a run of shows in the US along with Trivium, Beartooth and Archetypes Collide, they are now getting ready for the summer festivals in Europe. Their most recent full-length release, entitled “Malicious Intent”, showed quite a leap in songwriting and production, and opened many doors for the band. Recently, MALEVOLENCE was also part of a three-way split EP with Fit for an Autopsy and Thy Art Is Murder. Each band is represented by an original song and a cover. In MALEVOLENCE’s case, they chose a rather unusual track, Anastasia’s pop hit "Left Outside Alone”. The EP was released on April 7th, and its cover shows the impressive work of Israeli illustrator Eliran Kantor, who also collaborated with MALEVOLENCE on “Malicious Intent”.While the band’s metalcore sound may be more appeasing to a younger audience, there’s something in their body of work that will also please old school fans. Little by little, they are bridging the generational gap in the metal community, and their music, while aggressive, surely has its melodic moments. JOE DENINZON Talks Joining KANSAS: Im Pinching Myself That I Get To Play In a Band I Grew Up With Sonic Perspectives 2023-06-22 | It’s been just a few weeks since Joe Deninzon was announced as the new violinist for the legendary band Kansas. He takes the seat previously held by original member Robby Steinhart and then David Ragsdale.Joe Deninzon has been hailed by critics as “The Jimi Hendrix of the Violin,” because of his innovative style on the “Viper” seven-string electric violin. Joe is the lead singer and violinist for the progressive rock band, Stratospheerius, which has just released their 6th album, “Behind the Curtain (Live at ProgStock).” He can be heard on over a hundred albums and jingles as a violinist and string arranger.Deninzon has performed and/or recorded with the Who, Bruce Springsteen, 50 Cent, Sheryl Crow, Ritchie Blackmore, Alex Skolnick, Smokey Robinson, Les Paul, Peter Criss from KISS, Michael Sadler, Renaissance with Annie Haslam, Kurt Elling, and as a soloist with Jazz at Lincoln Center and the New York City Ballet. A BMI Composer’s Grant recipient and winner of the John Lennon Songwriting Contest, he has written solo works for violinist Rachel Barton Pine, and in 2015, premiered his Electric Violin Concerto with the Muncie Symphony Orchestra. Joe holds a Bachelors degree in Violin Performance from Indiana University and a Masters in Jazz Violin From Manhattan School of music. KANSAS original member and drummer Phil Ehart commented about Joe joining the band: “We are extremely excited for Joe Deninzon to be the newest member of KANSAS. IHSAHN Talks Course “How It’s Done” with JENS BOGREN: “The Most Important Takeaway is Commitment” Sonic Perspectives 2023-06-21 | Earlier this year, Ihsahn released his latest EP, “Fascination Street Sessions.” The thirteen-minute EP included two original tracks and a cover of Kent’s “Dom Andra,” and featured the vocal talents of Jonas Renske (Katatonia) and Øystein Aadland (Avkrvst). Critics unanimously praised the rich sound, high-quality production, and continued excellence from one of metal’s most beloved artists.
