How Much Asparagus Can ONE Family Eat? That 1870s Homestead 2024-05-01 | Today marked the beginning of a long-awaited project on our homestead: planting our very own asparagus beds. After prepping the soil a couple of days ago – a mix of grass lawn, dandelions, violets, and clover – we were eager to dive in. Armed with our trusty tiller and a single bottom plow, we tackled the task of breaking up the ground to make way for our future asparagus haven.It was quite the sight seeing our tractor pulling that plow, a tool Todd had acquired years ago in a trade. We managed to create neat trenches about 12 to 14 inches wide for our precious asparagus crowns. Once the groundwork was laid, it was time for some enriching – composted manure, about 3 to 4 inches deep, to give our future greens a nutritious start.We meticulously followed the "head to tail" planting method we learned from Living Traditions Homestead, ensuring each crown was snugly nestled in its new home. With two rows down the length of our trenches, spaced about 12 inches apart, we felt a sense of accomplishment.As we worked, thoughts turned to future care – watering diligently, mulching for moisture retention, and contemplating how to handle potential weed pressure. Despite the rain threatening to pour down on us, the excitement of what's to come kept us going.Sure, it'll be a few years before we enjoy a full harvest, but with our dedication and a little luck, we can already picture those fresh, tender spears gracing our plates. Until then, it's all about nurturing these plants and watching them thrive on our homestead. The SNAIL ROLL Gardening Hack | Huge Space Saver That 1870s Homestead 2024-04-21 | If you follow gardening content online like Instagram or TikTok you may have seen the Snail Roll Trick. It's where you roll-up soil like a snail and plant your seeds at the top. Similar to this Inspirational Instagram Reel: instagram.com/p/C4drRx1O9GPI'm running seriously low on space over on my grow-tower, and I'd really like to get my sweet potato slips into some soil soon before I plant them out. They seem to do a little better when they're acclimated to soil first, instead of just being in water. So why not try the snail trick with my slips and see how it goes? Depend on the length of the roll, I was able to fit between 25-40 slips in each bundle. I will continue to bottom water only like this, and probably won't try to even move the bundle until it's time to transport it outside and plant. Sprucing things up with 2 Year Old Sweet Potatoes That 1870s Homestead 2024-04-20 | Hey there! Welcome back to my 1870s Homestead! Today, I'm getting creative with some leftover sweet potatoes. Instead of tossing them, I'm giving them a new life as beautiful container plants. Even the firm ones that wouldn't win any beauty contests are perfect for this. I just grabbed some moistened potting mix and filled a pot. Then, I carefully tucked the sweet potatoes in, fat side down, making sure they were nice and cozy. These guys love warmth, so outside they go (as long as the temperature stays above freezing). If it gets too chilly, I'll just cover them up or bring them inside for the night.For the smaller sweet potatoes, I like to plant a little party of two or three in a pot – the more the merrier! It's amazing how these humble potatoes can transform into lush, cascading vines. They're perfect for hanging baskets, adding a pop of color to my porch, or trailing around my patio. Plus, these guys are super low-maintenance. Bottom watering is a breeze with this method, and all they need is a warm spot to thrive. So, next time you have leftover sweet potatoes, don't ditch them! A Government Program That WORKS | CHEAP Native Plants That 1870s Homestead 2024-04-18 | It's a windy but beautiful spring day here in Southeast Michigan, so let's get outside together and make some improvements to the homestead ♥ First up, we have new peach tree that we purchased from our local Conservation District spring plant sale. We'll also plant a few new flowering dogwood trees - and we plan to start thinning down the few bradford pear trees we still have on our property. We're also planting (2) new concord grape vines to expand our orchard area from one lonely vine to a total of (3) now. Our brassica plants (cabbage, broccoli) have also been in the ground for about 3 days now, and we're already seeing sings of cabbage moths flying out and about. So the covers will go on the frames today, to keep them out. There are other options for cabbage moths like BT, but we found simply keeping the moths completely out does a fantastic job. Planting 500 Onions | My Tips for a Successful Harvest That 1870s Homestead 2024-04-10 | It's the first week in April here in Southeast Michigan - which means it's time to get our onions in the ground! We typically buy our onion starts every year from Dixondale farms: dixondalefarms.com We grow "long day" onions here in Michigan, and my choice for this year is Patterson, Red Zeppelin, and Walla Walla. I have nearly 500 onions to plant, but in this video we're only going to get the first bed done. Proof Gardening Makes You Happy | Spring Planting That 1870s Homestead 2024-04-08 | Today is the day for our little baby cabbage and broccoli to move from the house out to the garden. I've been hardening them off outside on and off for the last week, so they should be ready to go! It's early in the season here in SE Michigan, but with cold hardy crops like these, you should be totally fine. That 1870s Homestead 2024-03-24 | In the next couple of weeks, we'll be putting the first of our cold-hardy crops into the ground and begin the 2024 garden season. We're trying quite a few new things this year, with the first being the application of landscaping fabric in some areas - as a trial run to see how it goes. Not all of the things will grow will work well with this, so we're being selective and only installing in certain areas. Getting Ready for Spring | Gardening Guide & Seeding Tips That 1870s Homestead 2024-03-13 | The 2024 garden season is officially underway, as we pot up our first batch of plants we started from seed a few weeks ago. These are broccoli and cabbages that I started, which are now ready for their new expanded home. Growing Clean Food | Top 5 Dirty Dozen Crops That 1870s Homestead 2024-03-08 | Today we're doing to discuss top five crops you may want to grow yourself from the "Dirty Dozen" list. The "Dirty Dozen" are (non-organic) grocery store items which have high pesticide residues even after washing, making them risky for consumption from conventional farming. Growing these items yourself lets you take control of your own food safety. The first crop highlighted is strawberries, followed by spinach and peppers, all of which are commonly consumed fruits and vegetables. Strawberries, for instance, contain pesticides like carandasm and bifenthrin, which are linked to hormonal disruption and cancer. We Can do Better than This | Pruning to give Life That 1870s Homestead 2024-02-20 | It has been probably 3 years since we did a proper prune of the trees in our orchard. We have one peach tree left, two pears, and about six apple trees that are in some serious need of love. So let's head out back together and try to get things back in shape. And when Todd gets home from work, we'll have him break out the saw and maybe a ladder and we'll try to get what I can't get done on my own. We do plan on expanding the orchard a little bit this spring, by adding a few more peach trees to the mix, and a few other surprises coming as well. Move Over Aunt Jemima | From Tree to Table Delicious Syrup That 1870s Homestead 2024-02-17 | In our last video youtu.be/VpeOkRT9gGk we shared with you the process of tapping our maple and walnut trees to harvest the sap to make syrup. Over the last 2 weeks, we have harvested and boiled down over 60 gallons of sap from a total of 7 trees. After each collection session, we boil off about 90% of the volume of the sap, down into a concentrate and freeze it. Now that we've filled our freezer in the garage, it's time to do the final boil down in syrup! The final boil down is crucial because it determines the thickness and sweetness of the syrup. Too much boiling can result in a syrup that's too thick or even burnt, while too little boiling may produce a syrup that's too thin and watery. Finding the right balance is essential to producing high-quality maple syrup. We typically use a candy thermometer and keep boiling until we get right around 219°F. Then we filter the product to remove any sugar sand. When you jar it, don't too it while the syrup is too hot or too cool. Optimal jarring temperature is around 193°F. My Homestead Mess: Pantry, Wheat Milling, Bread, and Broth That 1870s Homestead 2024-01-07 | I have a lot of stuff to get done on the homestead today. My pantry is a bit of a mess after the holiday's, and I have a lot of new things I need to put away as well. However, one my main goals today was to grind up some Spring Wheat berries and try to make some bread with them to see if it comes out the same as Winter Wheat berries. We'll also whip up some chicken broth with what I find in the freezer, and I'll share a bunch of miscellaneous pantry tips along the way as well. Homemade Enchilada Sauce | Canuary Pressure Canning That 1870s Homestead 2024-01-04 | Welcome to the Canuary Collaboration Series for 2024! Each day of this month a channel will post a canning video. When you engage in these videos by posting a comment, you will be entered into a drawing to win some fabulous prizes from @forjars and @SuttonsDaze A list of all the channels and dates is provided below, along with a summary of the recipe I used in this video ♥🥫Caramelizing Onions: Heat olive oil and cook a mix of red and white onions until caramelized (30-45 minutes).🥫Preparing Sauce: Add smashed garlic and cook briefly. Combine three quarts of tomato sauce, ancho chili peppers, spices (salt, cumin, chili powder, smoked paprika), ½ cup brown sugar, and ¼ cup liquid aminos or soy sauce.🥫Blending: Blend the sauce in batches until smooth using a blender or food processor.🥫Simmering: Bring the sauce to a boil, then simmer for 30 minutes to 1 hour to thicken.🥫Canning: Fill sterilized jars with the sauce, leaving a ½ inch headspace. Clean jar rims, seal with Four Jars Canning Lids. Today we'll visit both of them with you guys and share a little bit of what it's like inside. We had two main reasons to shop today, the first was to try to find some Spring Hard Red Wheatberries to try, and some to plant & grow this year as an experiment. The second was to stock up on flour - as I depleted a large portion of my stock during the holiday backing season. Pantry Restock | Canning Smoked Chicken & Black Beans That 1870s Homestead 2023-12-14 | It's time to start some winter canning! During the dark times of the year, I spend a lot of time filling in the gaps in my pantry. I often can up dry things like beans during this time, and also go through my freezer and work on cleaning things out to make room up for the upcoming harvests. In this video, we'll start with Black Beans, as I only have a couple jars left on the shelves downstairs. We also pulled 5 of of our pasture raised homegrown chickens from the freezer and put them on the smoker to cook. We'll debone the meat from them, pack it up in jars, and have ready made chicken on the shelves. Home Brewery | Making Mead Step 2 Racking That 1870s Homestead 2023-12-11 | We started a batch of mead about 6 weeks ago. The first video can be found youtu.be/-lisDcFPBKQ here. Today is the day where we are ready for the next step, which is the rack off the mead. This step is crucial for improving the clarity and overall quality of the mead. The process involves siphoning the clear liquid (free from sediment) from the fermentation vessel to a clean container, typically leaving behind any sediment that has settled at the bottom.
