Alice then enters a kitchen where she encounters a cook and a woman holding a baby. Alice convinces the woman to give her the child and takes the infant outside after the cook starts throwing objects. However, the baby suddenly transforms into a pig and slips out of Alice's grip. Alice discovers that the woman is actually a duchess. The Duchess's Cheshire Cat emerges and disappears a few times, directing Alice to the Mad Hatter's Mad Tea Party. After some time, Alice leaves.

The Queen invites Alice to participate in the royal procession, a march of playing cards and others led by the White Rabbit. When Alice unknowingly offends the Queen, she summons the executioner. Alice strikes the executioner's ears, then flees when all the playing cards pursue her. Alice wakes up and realizes that it was all a dream.

The story begins with a series of murders being committed in London by a serial killer known as "The Avenger." The murders are causing widespread panic in the city, and the police are under pressure to catch the killer.

Meanwhile, a young couple, Daisy and Joe Bunting, rent a room in their boarding house to a mysterious lodger, who they suspect may be the Avenger. Despite their suspicions, Daisy becomes increasingly attracted to the lodger and begins to fall in love with him.

As the lodger's behavior becomes increasingly strange and erratic, Daisy becomes convinced that he is the Avenger. She confides her suspicions to her brother, a police detective, who is also investigating the murders.

The lodger is eventually arrested and put on trial, but Daisy's testimony is inconclusive, and he is acquitted. However, as the lodger is leaving the courtroom, a woman in the crowd recognizes him as the Avenger, and he is finally caught and brought to justice.

The film ends with Daisy and Joe happily married, and the Avenger is behind bars.

▸▸Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans (also known as Sunrise) is a 1927 American silent romantic drama directed by German director F. W. Murnau (in his American film debut) and starring George O'Brien, Janet Gaynor, and Margaret Livingston. The story was adapted by Carl Mayer from the short story "The Excursion to Tilsit", from the 1917 collection with the same title by Hermann Sudermann.

Murnau chose to use the then new Fox Movietone sound-on-film system, making Sunrise one of the first feature films with a synchronized musical score and sound effects soundtrack. The film incorporated Charles Gounod's 1872 composition Funeral March of a Marionette, which was later used as the theme for the television series Alfred Hitchcock Presents (1955–1965). Frédéric Chopin's A minor prelude also features prominently in orchestral arrangement.

Sunrise won the Academy Award for Unique and Artistic Picture at the 1st Academy Awards in 1929. Janet Gaynor won the first Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role for her performance in the film (the award was also for her performances in 1927's 7th Heaven and 1928's Street Angel). The film's legacy has endured, and it is now widely considered a masterpiece and one of the greatest films ever made. Many have called it the greatest film of the silent era. In 1989, Sunrise was one of the 25 films selected by the U.S. Library of Congress for preservation in the National Film Registry for being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant". The Academy Film Archive preserved Sunrise in 2004. The 2007 update of the American Film Institute's list of the 100 greatest American films ranked it number 82, and the British Film Institute's 2012 Sight & Sound critics' poll named it the fifth-best film in the history of motion pictures, while directors named it 22nd.

Although the original 35mm negative of the original American version of Sunrise was destroyed in the 1937 Fox vault fire, a new negative was created from a surviving print.

PLOT

A vacationing Woman from the City (Margaret Livingston) lingers in a lakeside town for weeks. After dark, she goes to a farmhouse where the Man (George O'Brien) and the Wife (Janet Gaynor) live with their child. She whistles from the fence outside. The Man is torn, but finally departs, leaving his wife with the memories of better times when they were deeply in love.

The man and woman meet in the moonlight and kiss passionately. She wants him to sell his farm—which has not been successful recently—to join her in the city. When she suggests that he solve the problem of his wife by drowning her, he throttles her violently, but even that dissolves in a passionate embrace. The Woman gathers bundles of reeds so that when the boat is overturned, the Man can stay afloat.

The Wife suspects nothing when her husband suggests going on an outing, but when they set off across the lake, she soon grows suspicious. He prepares to throw her overboard, but when she pleads for his mercy, he realizes he cannot do it. He rows frantically for shore, and when the boat reaches land, the Wife flees.

Convinced the Wife has drowned, the grief-stricken Man stumbles home. The Woman from the City goes to his house, assuming their plan has succeeded. The Man begins to choke her. Then the Maid calls to him that his wife is alive, so he releases the Woman and runs to the Wife, who survived by clinging to one last bundle of reeds.

The Man kneels by the Wife's bed as she slowly opens her eyes. The Man and the Wife kiss, while the Woman from the City's carriage rolls down the hill toward the lake, and the film dissolves to the sunrise.

PLOT

Dante is barred from entering the hill of salvation by three beasts that bar his path (Avarice, Pride, and Lust). Beatrice descends from above and asks the poet Virgil to guide Dante through the Nine Circles of Hell. Virgil leads Dante to a cave where they find the river Acheron, over which Charon ferries the souls of the dead into Hell. They also see the three-headed Cerberus, and Geryon, a flying serpent with the face of a man. They see the Devil eating human beings whole, harpies eating the corpses of suicides, an evil man forced to carry his own severed head for eternity, people half buried in flaming lava, etc.

There follows a series of encounters in which the two meet up with a number of formerly famous historical figures whose souls were denied by both Heaven and Hell, and they listen to some of their tales told in flashback. These characters include Homer, Horace, Ovid, Lucanus, Cleopatra, Dido, the Queen of Carthage, the traitor Caiphus, Count Ugolino, Peter of Vigna, Francesca Da Rimini and her lover Paulo, Brutus and Cassius, Mohammed and Helen of Troy.

The main attraction of the film are the fantastic set designs depicting the horrors of Hell, with excessive violence and gore, designed to frighten the audience into becoming pious or God-fearing.

▸▸The Kid Brother is a 1927 American silent comedy film starring Harold Lloyd. It was successful and popular upon release and today is considered by critics and fans to be one of Lloyd's best films, integrating elements of comedy, romance, drama, and character development. Its storyline is an homage to a 1921 film called Tol'able David, although it is essentially a re-make of a little-known 1924 Hal Roach feature, The White Sheep, starring Glenn Tryon.

PLOT

The Hickorys are a respected family in Hickoryville. Sheriff Jim and his big, strong sons Leo and Olin have little respect for the youngest son, Harold, who does not have their muscles.

When Jim, Leo and Olin go to an important town meeting to discuss a dam, Harold is left behind. He puts on his father's gun and badge and is mistaken for the sheriff by "Flash" Farrell, who runs a traveling medicine show for Mary after the death of her father. Farrell talks Harold into signing a permit to let him, strongman Sandoni and dancer Mary perform. Later, Mary tries to avoid the unwanted attentions of Sandoni and encounters Harold. They are attracted to each other.

When Jim finds out that Harold authorized the medicine show, he orders his son to shut down the performance. Harold tries, but Farrell makes a fool of him, then has him tied up. Harold's sworn enemy, Hank Hooper, pelts him and accidentally starts a fire that consumes the medicine show wagon. Harold invites Mary to spend the night in the family home. Jim is asleep, so Harold cannot get his permission; Harold has to use his wits to overcome the opposition of his brothers. However, Mrs. Hooper and her son Hank show up and take Mary with them, as it would not be decent for Mary to spend the night in a house without "womenfolk".

The next day is a town celebration, where Jim is supposed to turn over to a state official the funds raised by the residents to help build the dam. However, the money is gone. Jim strongly suspects Farrell and Sandoni of being responsible, but Sam Hooper accuses him of the theft and refuses to let him go after them. Jim sends Leo and Olin, but not Harold, after them. When they return empty-handed, Jim allows himself to be tied up. There is talk of lynching.

Harold confesses to Mary that he is not the person he pretended to be, but she tells him she has faith in him. Then Hank accuses her of being in on the robbery. Harold fights back when some men grab her, only to have Hank knock him out and set him adrift in a rowboat. He awakens after the boat reaches an abandoned, beached ship. Aboard he finds the real thieves. Sandoni disposes of Farrell after they argue over the division of the loot. Then the strongman spots Harold and chases him all over the ship. Eventually, Harold subdues Sandoni and races back to town with his prisoner and the money to save his father. An impressed Jim tells him, "Son, you're a real Hickory." As Harold and Mary walk away, they encounter Hank. Harold musters the courage to fight his longtime nemesis and beats him up.

▸▸The King of Kings is a 1927 American silent epic film produced and directed by Cecil B. DeMille. It depicts the last weeks of Jesus before his crucifixion and stars H. B. Warner in the lead role.

Featuring the opening and resurrection scenes in two-color Technicolor, the film is the second in DeMille's Biblical trilogy, preceded by The Ten Commandments (1923) and followed by The Sign of the Cross (1932).

PLOT

Mary Magdalene is portrayed as a wild courtesan, entertaining many men around her. Upon learning that Judas is with a carpenter she rides out on her chariot drawn by zebras to get him back. Peter is introduced as the Giant apostle, and we see the future gospel writer Mark as a child who is healed by Jesus. Jesus casts the Seven Deadly Sins out of Mary Magdalene in a multiple exposure sequence.

Jesus is also shown resurrecting Lazarus and healing the little children. Some humor is derived when one girl asks if he can heal broken legs, and, when he says yes, she gives him a legless doll. Jesus smiles and repairs the doll.

Jesus and his apostles enter Jerusalem, where Judas incites the people and rallies them to proclaim Jesus King of the Jews. Jesus, however, renounces all claims of being an Earthly king. Caiaphas the High Priest is also angry at Judas for having led people to a man whom he sees as a false prophet. Meanwhile, Jesus drives away Satan, who had offered him an Earthly kingdom, and he protects a woman caught in adultery. The words he draws in the sand are revealed to be the sins the accusers themselves committed.

Judas turns over Jesus. Mary confronts her son and tells him to flee from the danger that is coming. Jesus replies that it must be done for the salvation of all peoples.

Jesus goes to the Garden of Gethsemane where he is soon captured by the Roman soldiers and betrayed by Judas. Judas' life is saved, but, upon seeing that Jesus is going to be killed as a result, he is horrified. Judas takes a rope that the Romans had used to bind Jesus' wrists and runs off. Jesus is beaten and then presented by Pontius Pilate to the crowd. Mary pleads for the life of her son and Mary Magdalene speaks for him but Caiaphas bribes the crowd to shout against Jesus.

Jesus is taken away to be crucified. Jesus is crucified and his enemies throw insults at him. When Jesus does die, however, a great earthquake comes up. The tree where Judas had hanged himself, with the rope used to bind Jesus's wrists, is swallowed up amidst bursts of hellfire. The people who had mocked Jesus run in terror, and the veil covering the Holy of Holies in the Jerusalem Temple is torn in two.

The tumult ends when Mary looks up at heaven and asks God to forgive the world for the death of their son. The chaos ends and the sun shines. Jesus is taken down from the cross and is buried. On the third day, he rises from the dead as promised. Jesus goes to the Apostles and tells them to spread his message to the world. He tells them "I am with you always" as the scene shifts to a modern city to show that Jesus still watches over his followers.

▸▸Santa Claus is an 1898 British short silent drama film, directed by George Albert Smith, which features Santa Claus visiting a house on Christmas Eve. The film, according to Michael Brooke of BFI Screenonline, "is believed to be the cinema's earliest known example of parallel action and, when coupled with double-exposure techniques that Smith had already demonstrated in the same year's The Mesmerist (1898) and Photographing a Ghost (1898), the result is one of the most visually and conceptually sophisticated British films made up to then." It has been described as the very first Christmas movie and a technical marvel of its time.

PLOT

Two children are being placed in bed by a maid. She turns off the lights and the children fall asleep. Santa Claus enters the room from the fireplace and proceeds to trim the tree. He then fills the stockings that were previously hung on the mantle by the children. After walking backward and surveying his work, he suddenly darts at the fireplace and disappears up the chimney. The children wake up to see that Santa was in their bedroom. This film surprises everyone and leaves them to wonder how St. Nicholas disappeared.

The next day, Tom prepares a new candle, demonstrating the values of responsibility and Christian stewardship.

▸▸Scrooge is a 1935 British Christmas fantasy film directed by Henry Edwards and starring Seymour Hicks, Donald Calthrop and Robert Cochran. Hicks appears as Ebenezer Scrooge, the miser who hates Christmas. It was the first sound version of the Charles Dickens classic A Christmas Carol, not counting a 1928 short subject that now appears to be lost. Hicks had previously played the role of Scrooge on the stage many times beginning in 1901, and again in a 1913 British silent film version. Original release date: November 26, 1935

Stylistically this film leans heavily towards German Expressionism and the films of Fritz Lang, involving dark shadows and darkened edges.

The script sticks very closely to Dickens' words.

PLOT

It is Christmas Eve of 1843: Ebenezer Scrooge (Sir Seymour Hicks), a cold-hearted and greedy elderly money-lender, is working in his freezing counting house along with his suffering, underpaid clerk Bob Cratchit (Donald Calthrop). Two businessmen (Charles Carson and Hubert Harben) arrive to collect a donation for the poor, but the old man responds that prisons and workhouses are sufficient resources to deal with poor people. Scrooge catches Bob trying to take some coal but warns him he will be out of a job if he does not go back to work. A visit from Fred (Robert Cochran), Scrooge's nephew and sole living relative, only incites further annoyance, with Scrooge refusing to dine with him and his wife, and claiming Christmas is 'Humbug!'.

That night after work, Bob goes home to celebrate the holidays with his family while Scrooge dines alone at a seedy pub while the lords and ladies of London celebrate Christmas with the Lord Mayor of London. At home, Scrooge encounters the ghost of his seven-year dead partner Jacob Marley (Claude Rains – whose voice is only heard) who wears a chain he 'forged in life' from his own wicked career. He tells Scrooge he will be haunted by three spirits in order to escape his fate.

That night, as Marley warned, Scrooge is haunted by the Ghost of Christmas Past (Marie Ney), who shows Scrooge when he lost his fiancée due to his greedy nature towards others including a debt-ridden couple. Scrooge then sees that his ex-fiancée Belle (Mary Glynne) is now married and has many children.

The next sprit, the Ghost of Christmas Present (Oscar Asche), shows Scrooge just how poor Bob and his family are as they have a meagre Christmas dinner of goose and pudding. The spirit threatens that unless the future changes, Tiny Tim (Philip Frost), the youngest son, who is ill, will die. Scrooge then sees how others keep Christmas before seeing Fred celebrate with his wife and friends.

The Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come (C.V. France) shows Scrooge what lies in store the following year. Scrooge discovers Tim is dead and that the man that was robbed and spoken of by some businessmen was himself after seeing his grave.

▸▸Deluge is a 1933 American apocalyptic science fiction film, directed by Felix E. Feist and released by RKO Radio Pictures.

The film is very loosely based on the 1928 novel of the same name by S. Fowler Wright, with the setting changed from the United Kingdom to the United States. It follows a small group of survivors after a series of unexplained natural disasters erupt around the world and destroy human civilization, including a massive tsunami which inundates New York City.

PLOT

Scientists discover that a violent storm is heading toward New York City and begin the warning process throughout the city. They believe that something is wrong with the natural barometer patterns and that an unprecedented event is imminent. A sudden eclipse of the sun verifies their notions and it seems that global destruction is near. Telegraphs from Rome and London explain days of unending earthquakes and state "The End of the World is at Hand." Tremendous earthquakes hit the Pacific Coast, killing millions, and it is reported that the entire western coast of the US has been demolished. The earthquakes have also caused major tsunamis in the oceans and disaster is just moments away.[citation needed]

Martin Webster (Sidney Blackmer) and his wife Helen (Lois Wilson) prepare for the oncoming disaster by gathering their children and some essentials and head for a high rock formation to escape the floods. Martin leaves Helen and goes back to the house to get more food and clothes, but the destruction of New York begins. Buildings crumble from earthquakes and tsunami waters envelop the city. Martin returns to find his wife and daughters are nowhere to be found. In the aftermath, grief-stricken Martin builds a shelter and tries to survive on his own.

Surviving in a cabin in another part of the New York City outskirts, two men, Jepson (Fred Kohler) and Norwood (Ralf Harolde), find Claire (Peggy Shannon) unconscious and washed up on the shore. As she recovers, the men start feuding and become very possessive. When Claire realizes the situation, she becomes uncomfortable and flees across the water for safety as she is a world-class swimmer, leaving the men angry and vengeful. Jepson kills Norwood and begins to search for Claire, vowing to bring her back.

Claire washes up on another shore, where Martin finds her this time. Martin and Claire become good friends and eventually fall in love. Meanwhile, in a nearby town, survivors have gathered together to start a new civilization. Among these survivors is Martin's wife, Helen, and their children. Tom (Matt Moore), one of the townsmen, found Helen in the aftermath, and has been taking care of her ever since. He has also fallen in love with her, but Helen is convinced that Martin is still alive.

Jepson teams up with a gang of thugs who help him find Claire and Martin and eventually trap them in a tunnel. The townspeople stumble upon the situation and save Martin and Claire and bring them back to their new found city. Once they arrive, Martin finds his children and discovers his wife is alive and well and goes to her. Claire and Tom are devastated.

After the reunion, Martin explains to Claire how he is in love with both his wife and with her and that he will not choose. Helen visits Claire and they have a painful discussion in which Claire says she will not give up Martin. However, when Claire sees Martin with his wife at the town meeting her heart breaks and she runs to the ocean. She swims away as Martin is left watching her go.

▸▸The Scarlet Claw is a 1944 American mystery thriller film based on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes detective stories. Directed by Roy William Neill and starring Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce, it is the eighth film of the Rathbone/Bruce series.

PLOT

Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson are in Canada attending a conference on the occult, when Lord Penrose receives a message that his wife Lady Penrose has been murdered in the small village of La Mort Rouge. Holmes and Watson are about to return home when Holmes receives a telegram from Lady Penrose, issued before her death, asking for help as she fears for her life. Holmes decides to investigate her death.

Holmes and Watson arrive at the village and discover that the inhabitants are all convinced that the murder is the work of the legendary monster of La Mort Rouge, which roams the marshes around the village. The "monster" is even later seen by Dr. Watson, who describes it as "the mostly ghastly apparition... like a roaring furnace spitting fire in all directions".

Holmes, however, is skeptical, and recognizes Lady Penrose as Lillian Gentry, a former actress, who was involved in a famous murder case several years before when actor Alistair Ramson killed another actor in a jealous rage over her. Ramson was believed to have been killed in a prison escape two years before, but now Holmes believes that Ramson - a master of disguise - is living in the village, having created a new identity, perhaps several, for himself.

Holmes then turns his attention to Judge Brisson, another inhabitant of the village with a connection to the case, as he passed sentence on Ramson. Despite Holmes' warnings, Brisson is murdered. Holmes tracks Ramson down to his hideout and discovers there is a third person that Ramson is preparing to kill. While Ramson is holding Holmes at gunpoint, Watson blunders in and Ramson escapes, albeit before Holmes can learn who Ramson's final target is.

Holmes learns that the third victim is to be Journet, the local inn-keeper, formerly a prison guard. However Journet has gone into hiding. Ramson then kills Marie, Journet's daughter, for not revealing her father's hideout. Holmes finds Journet and convinces him to spring a trap for the murderer.

Holmes and Watson announce that they are returning to Britain, and Journet comes out of hiding and lets it be known that he will be going to a church across the marsh to offer a prayer for Marie. Ramson attacks Journet out in the marsh, only to find that it is Holmes in disguise. The two men struggle, but Ramson escapes only to be killed by Journet with the murderer’s own weapon, a five-pronged garden weeder.

▸▸The Hunchback of Notre Dame is a 1923 American drama film starring Lon Chaney, directed by Wallace Worsley, and produced by Carl Laemmle and Irving Thalberg. The supporting cast includes Patsy Ruth Miller, Norman Kerry, Nigel de Brulier, and Brandon Hurst. The film was Universal's "Super Jewel" of 1923 and was their most successful silent film, grossing $3.5 million. The film premiered on September 2, 1923 at the Astor Theatre in New York, New York, then went into release on September 6.

The screenplay was written by Perley Poore Sheehan and Edward T. Lowe Jr., based on Victor Hugo's 1831 novel, and is notable for the grand sets that recall 15th century Paris as well as for Chaney's performance and make-up as the tortured hunchback bellringer Quasimodo. This was the seventh film adaptation of the novel. The film elevated Chaney, who was already a well-known character actor, to full star status in Hollywood, and also helped set a standard for many later horror films, including Chaney's The Phantom of the Opera in 1925.

PLOT

The story is set in Paris in 1482. Quasimodo is a deaf, half-blind, hunchbacked bell-ringer of the famous Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris. His master is a man named Jehan, the evil brother of Notre Dame's saintly archdeacon Dom Claude. One night, Jehan prevails upon Quasimodo to kidnap the fair Esmeralda, a dancing Roma girl (and the adopted daughter of Clopin, the king of the oppressed beggars of Paris' underworld).

The dashing Captain Phoebus rescues Esmeralda from Quasimodo, while Jehan abandons him and flees (later in the film, Quasimodo hates Jehan for abandoning him and is no longer loyal to him). At first seeking a casual romance, Phoebus becomes entranced by Esmeralda, and takes her under his wing. Quasimodo is sentenced to be lashed in the public square before Esmeralda and Dom Claude come to his aid.

Dom Claude restrains Quasimodo from violence.
To their dismay, Jehan and Clopin learn that Phoebus hopes to marry Esmeralda, despite being engaged to Fleur de Lys. Phoebus persuades Esmeralda to accompany him to a ball celebrating his appointment as Captain of the Guard by King Louis XI. He provides her with rich garments and introduces her to their hostess, Madame de Gondelaurier, as a Princess of Egypt.

Clopin, accompanied by his beggars, crashes the festivities and demands Esmeralda be returned. To avoid bloodshed, Esmeralda says that she does not belong with the aristocracy. Later, however, Esmeralda sends the street poet Pierre Gringoire to give Phoebus a note, arranging a rendezvous at Notre Dame to say goodbye to him. Phoebus arrives and is stabbed in the back by Jehan. After Esmeralda is falsely sentenced to death for the crime, she is rescued from the gallows by Quasimodo and carried inside the cathedral, where he and Dom Claude grant her sanctuary.

When Quasimodo finds Jehan attacking Esmeralda, he throws his former master off the ramparts of Notre Dame, but not before Jehan fatally stabs him three times in the back. Phoebus finds and embraces Esmeralda. Witnessing this, Quasimodo rings his own death toll, and Gringoire and Dom Claude enter the bell tower just in time to see him die. The last image is of the great bell swinging silently above Quasimodo's corpse.

The Phantom Carriage is notable for its special effects, its innovative narrative structure with flashbacks within flashbacks, and for having been a major influence on the works of Ingmar Bergman. ▸▸Silent Night, Bloody Night is a 1972 American slasher film directed by Theodore Gershuny and co-produced by Lloyd Kaufman. The film stars Patrick O'Neal and cult actress Mary Woronov in leading roles, with John Carradine in a supporting performance. The plot follows a series of murders that occur in a small New England town on Christmas Eve after a man inherits a family estate which was once an insane asylum.

It was filmed in Oyster Bay, Long Island, New York in 1970 but was not released theatrically until 1972 under the alternate titles Night of the Dark Full Moon, and in 1981 as Death House (sometimes stylized as Deathouse).

PLOT

On Christmas Eve 1950, Wilfred Butler dies in a burning accident outside his mansion in East Willard, Massachusetts. The residence is bequeathed to his grandson, Jeffrey. Twenty years later, in 1970, lawyer John Carter arrives in East Willard on Christmas Eve with his assistant and mistress Ingrid, having been charged by Jeffrey to sell the house. Carter meets with the town's leading citizens: Mayor Adams; Sheriff Bill Mason; the mute Charlie Towman, who owns the local newspaper; and Tess Howard, who operates the town's telephone switchboard. They all agree to buy the Butler mansion on behalf of the town for the bargain price of $50,000, which Jeffrey requires to be paid in cash the next day. Carter and Ingrid spend the night at the Butler mansion, but are brutally murdered in bed with an axe by an unseen assailant. After the murders, the killer places a crucifix in Ingrid's hand and proceeds to phone the sheriff, introducing himself as the house's owner and asking him to investigate Carter's disappearance. While talking with Tess, who forwards his call, the killer calls himself "Marianne".

At nightfall, Jeffrey arrives at the mansion to meet with Carter, but finds it locked and empty. He drives to the mayor's home, where he meets Diane, the mayor's daughter. The mayor has gone to the county's bank to obtain the required cash for the payment, so she redirects Jeffrey to the sheriff's office. Simultaneously, the sheriff heads to the mansion, but first stops at Wilfred Butler's disturbed gravesite, where he is beaten to death with a shovel. Failing to locate the sheriff, Jeffrey returns to the mayor's home, where Diane tells him she has received phone calls for her father from someone named "Marianne" who beckons her to the mansion.

At the mansion, Jeffrey finds his grandfather's diary in the foyer, which reveals he was the one who got Marianne pregnant. The diary recounts how Wilfred grew hostile toward the complacent hospital staff, so on Christmas Eve 1935, he freed the hospital's patients, causing a massacre that resulted in Marianne's death as well. He then ended up faking his death in 1950 and has been living anonymously in a nearby mental hospital ever since before escaping. Jeffrey tells Diane that his grandfather/father is still alive, and that the sheriff, Tess, Towman and the mayor were all former inmates Wilfred sought revenge on for the death of Marianne. The mayor arrives at the mansion armed with a rifle, and he and Jeffrey open fire, killing each other. The killer, revealed to be the elderly Wilfred Butler, finally appears, and Diane grabs Jeffrey's gun and shoots him dead.

A year later, Diane takes one last look at the Butler mansion before it is destroyed by a bulldozer crew.

▸▸ Lionel Atwill, Fay Wray, Melvyn Douglas, and Dwight Frye star in Frank R. Strayer's 1933 Pre-Code horror film The Vampire Bat.

PLOT

As the residents of Kleinschloss die from blood loss, the mayors believe that vampirism is on the rise, but police inspector Karl Brettschneider remains doubtful. The victims are cared for by scientist Otto von Niemann, who investigates their condition. Martha Mueller, a bat-attack victim, is visited by Hermann Glieb, a mentally challenged man who likes bats because they are "soft like a cat" and "nice."

Dr. von Niemann encounters one of the townsfolk Kringen on the road home. Kringen says that he was attacked by a bat which was actually the vampire which had changed form. He withheld the story from the town in order not to spread fear. However, Dr. von Niemann urges Kringen to reveal his tale. Kringen becomes suspicious that Glieb is the vampire because of his obsession with bats. Glieb collects bats off the streets and lives with them.

The doctor returns to his home, which also contains the hypochondriac Gussie Schnappmann, her niece Ruth Bertin, and servants Emil Borst and Georgiana. Glieb is quickly suspected to be the vampire around town causing people to become afraid of him. Dr. von Niemann and another doctor, Dr. Haupt, determine that Ms. Mueller, as with all of the previous deaths, has died from blood loss. Upon seeing the corpse, Glieb runs away screaming.

The next morning, while Dr. von Niemann, Brettschneider, and Bertin are discussing vampires inside the house, Glieb enters the garden. The town fathers arrive to the house and inform of Kringen's death and Gleib's disappearance. An angry mob hunts down Gleib and chases him through the countryside and into a cave, where he falls to his death.

On that night, Dr. von Niemann is observed controlling Emil Borst, who picks up Georgiana and takes her to Dr. von Niemann's lab, where a strange organism is observed and they drain Georgiana's blood from her neck.

Brettschneider and Dr. von Niemann are informed of Georgiana's death after Schnappmann discovers her body in her bed. They find Ms Mueller's crucifix, which Glieb toyed with the night Dr. von Niemann went to see her. Because no other plausible explanations for the deaths exist, Brettschneider believes that vampires are present in the village. They conclude that Glieb is guilty after seeing him in the garden that morning.

However, upon hearing of Glieb's death, Brettschneider's conviction is decimated. Brettschneider is instructed by the doctor to return home and use sleeping pills, though the doctor has given him poison instead in an attempt to drain his blood. Bertin observes Dr. von Niemann controlling Borst telepathically at Brettschneider's residence. It comes to light that the doctor has created an artificial being and is using the blood to keep it fed. Bertin is tied up and gagged in Dr. von Niemann's lab. Brettschneider enters disguised as Borst, with the real Borst's body on a trolly, whom Brettschneider says is himself. Dr. von Niemann approaches 'Borst', who is really Brettschneider, and Brettschneider pulls a gun on the doctor and goes to unbind Bertin. Brettschneider drops the gun when he is attacked and wrestles with Dr. von Niemann. Borst takes the gun and shoots Dr. von Niemann as the two men fight. Borst then shoots himself as well.

▸▸The Pied Piper of Hamelin, a musical film based on the Robert Browning poem of the same name, became the first television film when it aired on NBC on November 26, 1957. That evening, The Nat King Cole Show and The Eddie Fisher Show followed its airing. Pete King arranged the music of Edvard Grieg with special lyrics by Hal Stanley and Irving Taylor. The film stars Claude Rains, Van Johnson, Lori Nelson, Jim Backus, and Kay Starr. Bretaigne Windust (a veteran of Broadway) directed this film. Nearly all of the dialogue in The Pied Piper of Hamelin is rhymed, including lines directly lifted from Browning's poem.

Unlike most live family shows of the period, this picture was shown on Technicolor three-strip motion picture film rather than being live. Hemo the Magnificent and Our Mr. Sun were one-hour science productions which were the only prior television sequences to use three-strip Technicolor. Erroneously, theatrical prints state that the film was made in Eastmancolor.

Due to the film's success, a record album was created, and the picture was rebroadcast on NBC in 1958. It was then syndicated to a number of local stations, where it was rebroadcast annually for many years in the same manner as other holiday specials. It was only briefly shown in movie theaters in 1966, with poor results.

Due to fond remembrance of Van Johnson's excellent performance, he returned over a decade later as The Minstrel, a Pied Piper-like criminal in the Batman TV series.

PLOT

The Pied Piper is first spotted working magic in Hamelin by a disabled boy named Paul while playing his signature melody, 'In the Hall of the Mountain King.' Paul tells his best friend, the schoolteacher Truson, who bears an uncanny resemblance to the Piper, about the Piper's magic, but he is skeptical.

A mysterious Piper suddenly appears before the mayor and his councilors, offering to eradicate the town's vermin in exchange for all the money in the treasury. When the Piper plays a joyful tune for the children, Truson and the children are the only ones who can hear it. When he plays "In the Hall of the Mountain King" and leads the rats to their demise in the river, only the materialistic adults such as the mayor can hear the music.

After the piper eradicated the rats, the mayor and his cabinet attempt to fool the Piper into signing an agreement that, among other legalistic devices, requires him to deposit money to guarantee that the rats will not return. The Piper is angry at the mayor and leaves without his payment. The mayor plans to use the gold to build the chimes. Truson (who is in love with Mara, the mayor's daughter) is jailed for speaking out against the injustice.

The Mayor plans to marry Mara to the king's emissary, but the Piper takes his revenge by playing a happy variation of "In the Hall of the Mountain King," leading the children of Hamelin away into a beautiful kingdom concealed in a cave that magically opens for the children. The cave magically seals before Paul, who has fallen, can pass through.

Hamelin's leaders attempt to blast into the mountain with cannon fire. When this fails, the mayor scapegoats Truson, using his resemblance to the Piper as one excuse, but Truson appeals to the people and is chosen as the new mayor. Before Truson and Paul depart to deliver money to help the refugee population of Hamelout, Truson leads the town in silent prayer. The sound of a Piper's pipe is heard and the children are freed. Truson is magically gifted with the Piper's pipe, which he gifts to the former Mayor who has recently been repentant for his actions.

▸▸John Ford's Three Bad Men (1926) is an American silent Western film. According to Bob Mastrangelo, Three Bad Men is one of John Ford's greatest silent Westerns. It is possible that Akira Kurosawa's 1958 film Three Bad Men in a Hidden Fortress, which is known as The Hidden Fortress elsewhere, was inspired by it.

PLOT

In 1877, gold was discovered on Sioux land in the Dakotas. Dan O'Malley, the Carltons, a group of outlaws led by "Bull" Stanley, among numerous others, came to Custer in hopes of finding gold and acquiring land when the land was opened for exploration. On their way to steal horses, the outlaws save Lee Carlton from other outlaws who have murdered her father. The outlaws, in turn, decide to protect her on their way to Custer. The sheriff and his cronies are involved in various rackets and conspiracies, including learning where the gold is located and trying to get to it before the others.

PRODUCTION

The shooting of the movie took place over a fifteen-month period in 1925 and 1926. During filming, Olive Borden, Priscilla Bonner, and Grace Gordon, three of the film's actresses, became infected with paratyphoid fever and were hospitalized.

The film was shot in the following locations:
- A desert near Victorville, California
- Jackson Hole, Wyoming and the surrounding areas

▸▸Les Illusions fantaisistes (or Whimsical Illusions in English) is a 1909 French silent short film directed by Georges Méliès.

PRODUCTION

George Méliès has the lead role in the film where he plays a magician, alongside the actor Manuel as his assistant. This film is another example of some of the early special effects in the film industry. Stage machinery and substitution splices were the main tools and techniques used in creating these effects.

The magic tricks in which a head comes out of a crate and chases the magician around the stage, and the one where giant playing-cards come from a display stand, were actually ones that Méliès had previously performed live on stage at his Paris theatre of illusions, the Théâtre Robert-Houdin. (This latter stage illusion was created by Méliès as "Le décapité recalcitrant" in 1891, with the head being that of a talkative pedant, Professor Barbenfouillis.)

RELEASE

The film was released in 1909 by Méliès's Star Film Company and is numbered 1508–1512 in its catalogues. A surviving print of the film was rediscovered in the 1920s by Jean P. Mauclaire, director of the French art house cinema Studio 28. (The print was one of a batch of Méliès films that had been owned by and shown at the Dufayel department store in Paris, and which had then been stored at the Château de Jeufosse in Normandy, where Mauclaire came across them.)[2] Mauclaire exhibited the film as part of the Gala Méliès at the Salle Pleyel on 16 December 1929.

The surviving print of the film is hand-colored, but it is unclear when the coloring was done; the Gala Méliès program identified the print as an original copy, but it is known that some prints shown at the Gala were hand-colored in 1929 specifically for that event. One legend claims that the 1929 coloring was done by Berthe Thuillier, an artist who had collaborated prolifically with Méliès on film colorization at the turn of the century. However, this was disproved in an interview with Thuillier herself in the journal Le Nouvel Art Cinématographique (volume 5, January 1930, page 74).

▸▸The Last Time I Saw Paris is a 1954 American romantic drama film directed by Richard Brooks and starring Elizabeth Taylor, Van Johnson, and Donna Reed. The screenplay by Julius J. Epstein and Philip G. Epstein is based on F. Scott Fitzgerald's short story "Babylon Revisited". The film won the Academy Award for Best Cinematography (color) and was nominated for Best Art Direction (color). It was the last film in which Taylor and Reed worked together.

PLOT

While covering the post-war celebrations in Paris, World War II correspondent for Stars and Stripes, Charles Wills (Van Johnson), is grabbed by a lovely woman who kisses him and then vanishes. He follows the throng to Café Dhingo and meets Marion Ellswirth (Donna Reed), another lovely woman. Their instant mutual attraction is noted when she invites him to participate in her father's celebration of the end of World War II in Europe. When they arrive at the Ellswirth residence, they find that the woman who had kissed Charles is Helen Ellswirth (Elizabeth Taylor), Marion's younger sister. Claude Matine (Jean-Pierre Aumont), Marion's persistent French suitor, accompanies them.

James Ellswirth (Walter Pidgeon), their father, survived World War I and raised his two daughters to want the same drifter lifestyle that he now had. Helen, who is heir to her father's traits, uses her beauty to sustain a life of elegance and luxury, even though they are flat broke. Marion, on the other hand, seeks serious and conventional men like Claude, a future prosecutor, and Charles, a novelist in the making, who is seeking a girlfriend.

Charles chooses to date Helen instead of Marion. Charles and Helen fall in love and following her near-death bout with pneumonia they get married and settle in Paris. James joins them happily, and Helen eventually has a baby girl, Vickie. After Charles left Marion for Helen, Claude reunited with Marion and marries her. Charles struggles to make ends meet with his meager salary and has trouble writing his novels while looking after Vickie.

Charles continues to have all his novels turned down by publishers, however James' oil wells in Texas finally began producing oil around this time. Since Charles had received the oil as part of his dowry, he quits his position as a newspaper reporter. Charles parties away his cash and Helen and James quit attending parties to begin throwing them instead. Helen became more responsible after gaining sudden wealth, but begins to flirt with attractive tennis player Paul Lane (Roger Moore) and Charles begins competing in a Monte Carlo-to-Paris road race with divorced Lorraine Quarl.

After the competition, Charles returns to Paris, only to discover Helen sitting at Café Dhingo with Paul. An angry Charles goes home, chains the door, and drinks to the point of being disoriented, making it so that the door can only partially open. Helen gets home and cannot get in. She cries for help, but Charles is passed out on the stairs and drops the bottle as she cries. Helen is forced to walk to her sister's house in the snow and rain as a result. She catches pneumonia again and dies as a consequence.

Marion petitions the court for and wins full custody of Vickie, and Charles returns to America. Several years later, having written a book and quit drinking, Charles returns to Paris in an attempt to convince Marion that he has reformed. The only drink he has per day, he tells her, is one. Marion refuses to hand over Vickie to Charles because she still dislikes him for having fallen in love with Helen rather than herself and for causing Helen's death. Claude explains to her that Charles and Vickie belong together, and that she is punishing Charles for not recognizing that Marion loved him by marring Helen instead.

As Claude and Vickie wait outside, Marion enters Café Dhingo (where a large photo of Helen is on the wall) in order to find Charles (who is looking at the portrait). When Marion finds Charles, she tells him that Helen would not have wanted him to be alone. The two of them make their way outside and when young Vickie sees Charles, she runs to him and the two of them walk away together.

▸▸The film The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, from the Selig Polyscope Company, is the earliest surviving film version of L. Frank Baum's 1900 novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Because of contractual obligations related to Baum's personal bankruptcy caused by The Fairylogue and Radio-Plays, it was created. Although the musical The Wizard of Oz (1902) was based on it, the film focuses on the Wicked Witch of the West, who does not appear in the musical.

PLOT

When Dorothy Gale (Bebe Daniels) and Imogene the Cow are chased by Hank the Mule, Dorothy runs to the cornfield and discovers that the family Scarecrow (Robert Leonard) is alive. They realise a cyclone is approaching, so they all hide in a haystack. As Dorothy, Toto, Hank, Imogene, and the Scarecrow are swept away to the Land of Oz, soldiers are frightened away by Witch Momba (Winifred Greenwood), who attacks the Wizard of Oz (Hobart Bosworth) as a result of his threat to her reign. Glinda the Good Witch (Olive Cox) changes Toto into a real protector as Dorothy plays with him. Dorothy meets the Cowardly Lion who joins her in her journey. They then come upon the Rusty Woodman and oils his joints for him. Eureka the Cat befriends some children, but they get abducted by the Witch Momba. After abducting children, the Witch is confronted by Dorothy. Dorothy tosses water onto the Witch Momba, killing her and liberating the children and animals. Dorothy and her friends come to the Emerald City, where the citizens dance and the Scarecrow declares kingship through the reading of a note from the Wizard. Dorothy and the Wizard leave the Emerald City in a hot air ballon.

▸▸In 1915, D. W. Griffith directed The Birth of a Nation, a silent epic drama film based on Thomas Dixon Jr.'s 1905 novel and play The Clansman. Griffith co-wrote the screenplay with Frank E. Woods, and Harry Aitken produced the picture.

The Birth of a Nation is a prominent film landmark, according to the film's technical prowess. It was the first non-serial American film ever produced, with a running time of 12 reels. It tells the tale of the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, who was murdered by John Wilkes Booth, and of two families, the Stonemans and Camerons, as they struggle for supremacy during the Civil War and Reconstruction eras. It was the first American film to feature a musical score for an orchestra. It introduced closeups and fadeouts, and it was the first film to include a carefully staged battle sequence with hundreds of extras that appeared to be thousands. A 13-page 'Souvenir Program' was included. President Woodrow Wilson and his family viewed the film at the White House with members of his cabinet, making it the first film screened at the White House.

The film has been a subject of controversy ever since its release, as it has been described as "the most offensive film in Hollywood history." The image of Lincoln as a Southern sympathizer is at odds with the Lost Cause narrative, which promotes sympathy for the South. The film has been condemned for its racist portrayal of African Americans. Because the Ku Klux Klan (KKK) is depicted as a virtuous organization that defends American values and protects white females from sexual assaults by blacks, the film has been condemned for its racist portrayal of blacks. The film has also received criticism due to the fact that white actors play blacks in blackface, and because the film portrays blacks as unintelligent and sexually aggressive towards white women.

Because the movie was popular across the country, its success was both a consequence of and a contributor to racial segregation in the United States. Across the country, black Americans organised and protested after seeing the film's negative portrayals of black people and Civil War history. In Boston and other localities, the NAACP and black leaders campaigned unsuccessfully to have the film banned because it was believed to provoke racial tensions and violence. Griffith's Intolerance was produced the following year in response to the controversy over Birth of a Nation.

Despite being divisive, The Birth of a Nation was a nationwide commercial success, grossing more than any previous film, and it had a significant impact on both the film industry and American society. An unfortunate consequence of the film was that a few months following the film's release, the Ku Klux Klan was revived, inspired by the movie. The film was inducted into the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress in 1992 because it was deemed to be culturally, historically, and aesthetically important.

PLOT

The movie comprises two equal-length sections. It follows two families, the Northern Stonemans and the Southern Camerons. The Stonemans become connected with the Camerons when the Cameron brothers visit the Cameron estate in South Carolina, representing the Old South. While Phil Stoneman falls in love with Margaret Cameron, young Ben Cameron idolizes Elsie Stoneman. When the Civil War starts, the young men of both families enlist in their respective armies.

▸▸Phil Karlson directed Kansas City Confidential, a 1952 film noir crime film, starring John Payne and Coleen Gray. It was released in the United Kingdom under the title The Secret Four. Another film noir, 99 River Street, which was directed by Phil Karlson and starred Payne the following year, was followed by Hell's Island, a film noir in colour.

Mr. Big (John Payne) is timing the arrival of the armored car, which picks up cash from a bank and a flower delivery van. Boyd Kane (a cop-killer), Peter Harris (a gambler wanted for murder), and Tony Romano (a womanizing getaway driver) are all ready to rob the armoured car as soon as it arrives. A mask is used to conceal his identity as he interviews them, as each has a reason to flee the country.

The heist goes as planned, with each crook wearing a mask to prevent identification. Rolfe unknowingly drives away as the gang arrives in a lookalike floral van. The gang subdues the armored car guards, grabs the money, and escapes. Mr. Big gives each gang member a torn King card. He tells them to keep the cards and that, if something goes wrong and Mr. Big cannot make it, they will be able to identify them to whoever he sends. His other associates await the payment in Mexico.

Rolfe's alibi checks out, and the real robbery vehicle is discovered. Because he maintains his innocence, the police arrest Rolfe and try to beat a confession out of him. Rolfe loses his job and decides to find the criminals and clear his name. Harris has fled the city, so Rolfe tails him to Tijuana. Rolfe correctly believes he is one of the robbers, so he pursues Harris.

Rolfe discovers and brutalizes Harris into divulging the gang's meeting place. At the airport, police shoot dead Harris. Rolfe realises he can impersonate Harris by wearing the mask and holding the torn playing card.

Rolfe meets Kane and Romano in Borados, unaware that Tim Foster (Mr. Big) is also present. Scott, an insurance investigator from Kansas City, is amazed to discover that Foster has summoned him to Barados. Foster's plan is exposed when he talks to Scott: he had no intention of allowing the three thugs to get away with the money. He will pretend to have solved the robbery and take the reward for doing so, thus regaining his position as a Kansas City police officer.

When Foster's daughter, Helen, a law student, arrives, his plan is thrown off. She tells him that Kansas City's mayor agreed to look into the scandal that cost him his job and cost him his job. Helen tells Foster that she likes Rolfe. That night, Rolfe shows the gang members the torn card as part of a poker game. Kane and Romano react, but Foster does not. He realizes that Rolfe is not Harris. Rolfe catches Romano searching his room and beats him up. After Romano submits, they agree to cooperate until he receives his money....

▸▸Creature from the Haunted Sea is a 1961 horror comedy film directed by Roger Corman. Written by Charles B. Griffith, the film is a parody of spy, gangster, and monster movies (mostly Creature from the Black Lagoon), concerning a secret agent, XK150 (played by Robert Towne under the pseudonym Edward Wain), who goes under the code name "Sparks Moran" in order to infiltrate a criminal gang led by Renzo Capetto (Antony Carbone), who is trying to transport an exiled Cuban general with an entourage and a large portion of the Cuban treasury out of Cuba. Filmgroup released the film as a double feature with Devil's Partner.

PLOT

During the Cuban Revolution, deported American gambler and racketeer Renzo Capetto (Anthony Carbone) comes up with a get-rich-quick scheme and uses his yacht to help a group of loyalists headed by General Tostada (Edmundo Rivera Alvarez) escape with Cuba's national treasury, which they plan to use to stage a counterrevolution.

American secret agent XK150, using the alias Sparks Moran (Robert Towne, credited as Edward Wain), has infiltrated the gang which consists of Capeto's brazenly felonious blond girlfriend Mary-Belle Monahan (Betsy Jones-Moreland); her deceptively clean-cut younger brother Happy Jack (Robert Bean); and a gullible, good-natured, and homicidal oaf named Pete Peterson Jr. (Beach Dickerson), who constantly does animal impressions.

Unfortunately, despite his other role as the story's omniscient narrator, Sparks is too much the Maxwell Smart-style bumbler to figure out what is going on because of his own incompetence and his hopeless infatuation with the completely uninterested Mary-Belle, who regards his attempts to rescue her from a life of crime with an amused contempt.

Capetto plans to steal the fortune in gold and then to claim that the mythical "Creature from the Haunted Sea" rose and devoured the loyalists, but it is he and his crew who murder the Cuban soldiers with sharpened, claw-like gardening tools and leave behind "footprints" made with a toilet plunger and a mixture of olive oil and green ink. However, he does not know that there really is a shaggy, pop-eyed sea monster lurking in the very waters where he plans to do the dirty deed and that the creature may make his plan all too easy to pull off.

When the monster's insatiable hunger upsets his scheme, Capetto decides to sink his boat into 30 feet of water off the shore of a small island and then to retrieve the gold later. Complications ensue when the male members of his gang get romantically involved with the natives, with Pete hooking up with Porcina (Esther Sandoval) and Jack with her pretty daughter Mango (Sonia Noemí González), and local working girl Carmelita (Blanquita Romero) takes an instant liking to Sparks.

Capetto and his gang go scuba diving to attempt to salvage the loot, but the creature picks them all off one by one except for Sparks and Carmelita, and the movie ends with the creature sitting on the undersea treasure and happily picking its teeth. The creature burps and the bubbles roll up with the credits.

▸▸The Black Pirate is a 1926 American silent action adventure film shot entirely in two-color Technicolor about an adventurer and a "company" of pirates. Directed by Albert Parker, it stars Douglas Fairbanks, Donald Crisp, Sam De Grasse, and Billie Dove. In 1993, The Black Pirate was included in the annual selection of 25 motion pictures to be added to the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress, being deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.

PLOT

The film begins with the looting of a ship already captured and badly mauled, by the pirates. After relieving the ship and crew of valuables, the pirates fire the ship, blowing up the gunpowder on board, sinking her. While the pirates celebrate, two survivors wash up on an island, an old man and his son. Before dying, the older man gives his signet ring to his son (Douglas Fairbanks). His son buries him, vowing vengeance.

The Pirate Captain and Lieutenant bring some crew to the other side of the same island to bury some of their plunder. They then plan to murder the other pirates: "Dead men tell no tales." But first, the son appears as the "Black Pirate", who offers to join their company and fight their best man to prove his worth. After much fighting, the Black Pirate kills the Pirate Captain. The Pirate Lieutenant sneers, and says there is more to being a pirate than sword tricks. To further prove his worth, the Black Pirate says he will capture the next ship of prey single-handed, which he does. He then uses his wits to prevent the pirates from blowing up the ship along with the crew and passengers, suggesting that they hold the ship for ransom.

When a woman is discovered on board, the Pirate Lieutenant claims her. Being in love at first sight for her, the Black Pirate finds a way to temporarily save her from this fate by presenting her as a "princess" and urging the crew to use her as a hostage to ensure their ransom will be paid, as long as she remains "spotless and unharmed".

The pirates cheer the Black Pirate, and want to name him captain. The Pirate Lieutenant jeers but consents to wait to see if the ransom is paid by noon the next day. However, he secretly has a confederate destroy the ransom ship later that night to ensure it will not return. Then, when the Black Pirate is caught trying to release the woman, the Pirate Lieutenant exposes him as a traitor and the pirates force him to walk the plank.

It is the first feature-length film to utilize the Vitaphone sound-on-disc sound system with a synchronized musical score and sound effects, though it has no spoken dialogue. The film is inspired by Lord Byron's 1821 epic poem of the same name. The screenplay was written by Bess Meredyth with intertitles by Maude Fulton and Walter Anthony.

Don Juan stars John Barrymore as the hand-kissing womanizer. The film has the most kisses in film history, with Barrymore kissing (all together) Mary Astor and Estelle Taylor 127 times.

PLOT

In the prologue, Don José, warned of his wife's infidelity, seals his wife's lover alive in his hiding place and drives her from the castle; abandoned to his lust, he is stabbed by his last mistress, and with his dying words he implores his son, Don Juan, to take all from women but yield nothing. Ten years later, young Don Juan, a graduate of the University of Pisa, is famous as a lover and pursued by many women, including the powerful Lucrezia Borgia, who invites him to her ball. His contempt for her incites her hatred of Adriana, the daughter of the Duke Della Varnese, with whom he is enraptured; and Lucrezia plots to marry her to Count Giano Donati, one of the Borgia henchmen, and poison the duke. Don Juan intervenes and thwarts the scheme, winning the love of Adriana, but the Borgia declare war on the duke's kinsmen, offering them safety if Adriana marries Donati; Don Juan is summoned to the wedding, but he prefers death to marriage with Lucrezia. He escapes and kills Donati in a duel. The lovers are led to the death-tower, but while Adriana pretends suicide, he escapes; and following a series of battles, he defeats his pursuers and is united with Adriana.

The film tells the story of a phony spiritualist racket. The film is prominently featured in Alton's book on cinematography Painting with Light (1949).

The film stars Turhan Bey, Lynn Bari, Cathy O'Donnell, and Richard Carlson. Eagle-Lion Films signed a contract with Carole Landis for the part played by Bari, but Landis committed suicide a few days before filming began.

PLOT

Christine Faber (Lynn Bari) awakes one night to the sound of her late husband's voice calling out. She walks outside her beachfront home to investigate. There, she encounters a stranger named Alexis (Turhan Bey), a mysterious spiritualist who seems to know all about her. She hears her late husband's favorite musical composition, Frédéric Chopin's Fourth Prelude from Opus. 28 in E minor, and is unnerved by it. After more nights of eerie vocal manifestations, Christine and her younger sister Janet (Cathy O'Donnell) decide to consult with Alexis. Over time, they become enmeshed in Alexis's strange life. One evening, he stages a surprisingly convincing séance for the two women. After they leave, however, he is surprised by the appearance of Christine's dead husband, Paul Faber, alive and well. It turns out that Paul (Donald Curtis) had faked his own death two years earlier. Having now returned, he schemes for ways to dispatch Christine in order to get his hands on her wealth. He begins by blackmailing the crooked Alexis into continuing his con of the two sisters.

One evening, while Alexis romances young Janet just outside the beach house, Christine hears Paul's mysterious voice again. Just as before, she exits her bedroom to search outside but falls partway down a cliff and is ultimately saved by Alexis. Her fiancé, Martin (Richard Carlson), urges Christine to leave her house for safety and stay in a hospital. Christine refuses, helplessly entranced by the recurring voice of Paul. Later, Janet suspects something fishy in Paul's "visitations." And sure enough, when Paul's voice is heard again, Janet searches the beach house and discovers both Alexis and Paul concealed in a small room with microphones, wire recordings, and other tricks of the spiritualist con game. Paul threatens Janet with a pistol, but Alexis tries to protect her from harm. While doing so, he is fatally shot by Paul. The police arrive. Paul shoots at them; but the cops return fire. This time, Paul dies.

▸▸▸▸The Stranger is a 1946 American film noir starring Edward G. Robinson, Loretta Young, and Orson Welles. Welles's third completed feature film as director and his first film noir is about a war crimes investigator tracking a high-ranking Nazi fugitive to a Connecticut town. It is the first Hollywood film to present documentary footage of the Holocaust. The original story by Victor Trivas was nominated for an Academy Award.

PLOT

Mr. Wilson is an agent of the United Nations War Crimes Commission who is hunting for Nazi fugitive Franz Kindler, a war criminal who has erased all evidence which might identify him. He has left no clue to his identity except "a hobby that almost amounts to a mania—clocks."

Wilson releases Kindler's former associate Meinike, hoping the man will lead him to Kindler. Wilson follows Meinike to a small town in Connecticut, but loses him before he meets with Kindler. Kindler has assumed a new identity as "Charles Rankin," and has become a teacher at a local prep school. He is about to marry Mary Longstreet, daughter of Supreme Court Justice Adam Longstreet, and is involved in repairing the town's 400-year-old Habrecht-style clock mechanism with religious automata that crowns the belfry of a church in the town square.

When Kindler and Meinike do meet, Meinike, who is repentant and has become a Christian, begs Kindler to confess his crimes. Instead, Kindler strangles Meinike, who might expose him. Eventually, Wilson deduces that Rankin is Kindler, but not having witnessed the meeting with Meinike, he has no proof. Only Mary knows that Meinike came to meet her husband. To get her to admit this, Wilson must convince her that her husband is a criminal—before Kindler decides to eliminate the threat to him by killing her. Kindler's facade begins to unravel when Red, the family dog, discovers Meinike's body. To further protect his secret, Kindler poisons Red.

Meanwhile, Mary begins to suspect her husband is not being honest with her. She is torn between her desire to learn the truth concerning her husband as a possible monster and the idea of helping him create his new life. Wilson shows her graphic footage of Nazi concentration camps and explains how Kindler developed the idea of genocide. Not until Mary discovers Kindler's plot to kill her does she finally accept the truth. She dares her husband to kill her. Kindler tries, but he is prevented by the arrival of Wilson and his brother-in-law Noah, and escapes from the house.

Kindler then flees into the church belfry. Shortly afterwards Mary confronts him and a gun appears as a struggle between the two ensues; as the clock bell begins to chime most of the town arrives at the foot of the building. Wilson climbs up to the top of the tower where he too confronts Kindler. They fight and Mary ends up holding the gun and shoots Kindler. He staggers outside to the belfry's clock face, and is impaled by the sword of one of the moving clock figures. Weakened by the bullets and the impaling, he falls to his death.

Foreword
"All Heathville loved Dr. Paul Carruthers...the doctor found time to conduct certain private experiments — weird, terrifying experiments."

Dr. Paul Carruthers (Bela Lugosi), a chemist and physician in the small town of Heathville, is offered a $5,000 bonus from his employers for his contributions to the company, a pittance compared to the million dollars in income the company earned from his work. (His employers argue that he took a buyout early in the company's history instead of retaining his partnership stake.) Embittered and insulted, he seeks revenge and develops a system in which ordinary bats are enlarged to massive size, training them to be drawn to a new, pungent aftershave he is testing. He cleverly distributes the lotion to his enemies as a "test" product.

Once they have applied the lotion, the chemist then releases his Devil Bats in the night, targeting the families of his employer's owners. The bats succeed in attacking and killing one of the owners and two of his sons. A hot shot reporter from the Chicago Register, Johnny Layton (Dave O'Brien) gets assigned by his editor (Arthur Q. Bryan) to cover and help solve the murders. He and his bumbling photographer "One-Shot" McGuire (Donald Kerr) begin to unwind the mystery with some comic sidelights.

In the climactic closing scene, Layton dumps a sample of the aftershave on Carruthers, leading the bat to attack and kill its own master. Mary, the last surviving member of her family, runs into Johnny's arms.

The film is the sequel to the Reeves vehicle Hercules (1958) and marks Reeves' second – and last – appearance as Hercules. The film's screenplay, loosely based upon various Greek mythology and plays by Aeschylus and Sophocles, was written by Ennio De Concini and Pietro Francisci with Francisci directing and Bruno Vailati and Ferruccio De Martino producing the film.

PLOT

While travelling, Hercules is asked to intervene in a quarrel between two brothers, Eteocles and Polynices, over who should rule Thebes. Before he can complete this task, Hercules drinks from a magic spring and is hypnotized by a harem girl who dances the "Dance of Shiva", loses his memory and becomes the captive of Queen Omphale of Lydia. The Queen keeps men until she tires of them, then has them made into statues. While young Ulysses tries to help him regain his memory, Hercules' wife, Iole, finds herself in danger from Eteocles, current ruler of Thebes, who plans on throwing her to the wild beasts in his entertainment arena. Hercules slays three tigers in succession and rescues his wife, then assists the Theban army in repelling mercenary attackers hired by Polynices. The two brothers ultimately fight one another for the throne and end up killing each other; the good high priest Creon is elected by acclaim.

▸▸Intolerance is a 1916 epic silent film directed by D. W. Griffith. Subtitles include Love's Struggle Throughout the Ages and A Sun-Play of the Ages.

Regarded as one of the most influential films of the silent era (though it received mixed reviews at the time), the three-and-a-half-hour epic intercuts four parallel storylines, each separated by several centuries: first, a contemporary melodrama of crime and redemption; second, a Judean story: Christ's mission and death; third, a French story: the events surrounding the St. Bartholomew's Day massacre of 1572; and fourth, a Babylonian story: the fall of the Babylonian Empire to Persia in 539 BC. The scenes are linked by shots of a figure representing Eternal Motherhood, rocking a cradle.

Griffith chose to explore the theme of intolerance partly in response to his previous film The Birth of a Nation (1915) being criticized by the NAACP and other groups for perpetuating racial stereotypes and glorifying the Ku Klux Klan. Intolerance was not, however, an apology, as Griffith felt he had nothing to apologize for; in numerous interviews, Griffith made clear that the film was a rebuttal to his critics and he felt that they were, in fact, the intolerant ones. In the years following its release, Intolerance strongly influenced European film movements. In 1958, the film was voted number 7 on the prestigious Brussels 12 list at the 1958 World Expo. In 1989, it was one of the first films to be selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry.

The film consists of four distinct, but parallel, stories—intercut with increasing frequency as the film builds to a climax—that demonstrate humankind's persistent intolerance throughout the ages. The timeline covers approximately 2,500 years.

▸▸ Escape From Sobibor is the story of the mass escape from the Nazi extermination camp at Sobibor, the most successful uprising by Jewish prisoners of German extermination camps (uprisings also took place at Auschwitz-Birkenau and Treblinka). The film was directed by Jack Gold and shot in Avala, Yugoslavia (now Serbia).
The script, by Reginald Rose, was based on Richard Rashke's 1983 book of the same name, along with a manuscript by Thomas Blatt, "From the Ashes of Sobibor", and a book by Stanisław Szmajzner, Inferno in Sobibor.

PLOT

On 14 October 1943, members of the Sobibor camp's underground resistance succeeded in covertly killing 11 German SS-Totenkopfverbände officers and a number of Sonderdienst Ukrainian and Volksdeutsche guards. Of the 600 inmates in the camp, roughly 300 escaped, although all but 50–70 were later re-captured and killed. After the escape, SS Chief Heinrich Himmler ordered the death camp closed. It was dismantled, bulldozed under the earth, and planted over with trees to cover it up.

PLOT

The film charts the meeting, courtship and marriage of Julie Gardiner (Irene Dunne) and Roger Adams (Cary Grant) through the playing of popular songs relevant to each time period. After their spur-of-the-moment marriage on New Year's Eve and a night in Roger's train compartment en route to San Francisco, a pregnant Julie rejoins Roger in Tokyo, where he has a stint as a reporter. Julie loses their unborn child in the 1923 Tokyo earthquake and returns with Roger to California despondent, until their friend Applejack Carney (Edgar Buchanan) encourages them to adopt a child. While Roger struggles to keep a newspaper going in the fictional California town of Rosalia, Julie keeps house and fits out the nursery.

They apply at an adoption agency for a two-year-old boy, and receive a call from Miss Oliver (Beulah Bondi) that a five-week-old baby girl is available. Though Roger would have preferred a boy, he falls in love with the baby, and he and Julie care for her during their one-year probation period. At the end of that time Roger has lost the newspaper, and the law will not allow him to adopt the baby without an income. Roger appears before the judge and delivers an impassioned plea to keep the girl, whom he considers his own. The judge awards custody, and Roger returns home to Julie with their daughter.

Years later, Roger and Julie swell with pride as their daughter, Trina, not yet old enough to play an angel in the Christmas play, plays the "echo" instead. The following Christmas, Julie writes to Miss Oliver that Trina has died from a sudden illness. The child's death sends Roger into a deep depression, and Julie resolves to leave him, believing he no longer needs her. Just as she is about to leave for the train station, the couple receive a phone call from Miss Oliver, saying that a two-year-old boy has just become available for adoption. Roger and Julie embrace, ready to rebuild their marriage with a new child.

▸▸Abraham Lincoln, also released under the title D. W. Griffith's "Abraham Lincoln", is a 1930 pre-Code American biographical film about Abraham Lincoln directed by D. W. Griffith. It stars Walter Huston as Lincoln and Una Merkel, in her second speaking role, as Ann Rutledge. The script was co-written by Stephen Vincent Benét, author of the Civil War prose poem John Brown's Body, and Gerrit Lloyd. This was the first of only two sound films made by Griffith.

PLOT

The first act of the film covers Lincoln's early life as a storekeeper and rail-splitter in New Salem and his early romance with Ann Rutledge, and his early years as a lawyer and his courtship and marriage to Mary Todd in Springfield. The majority of the film deals with Lincoln's presidency during the American Civil War and culminates with Lee's surrender and Lincoln's assassination at Ford's Theatre.

Mother (Russian: Мать, Mat) is a 1926 Soviet drama film directed by Vsevolod Pudovkin. It depicts the radicalization of a mother, during the Russian Revolution of 1905, after her husband is killed and her son is imprisoned. Based on the 1906 novel The Mother by Maxim Gorky, it is the first installment in Pudovkin's "revolutionary trilogy", alongside The End of St. Petersburg (1927) and Storm Over Asia (aka The Heir to Genghis Khan) (1928).

The film was banned in the United Kingdom in 1930 after the Masses Stage and Film Guild applied for permission to screen it in London.

PLOT

Russia, 1905. Vlasov is a pipefitter at a factory, an alcoholic, and an abusive husband and father. His long-suffering wife, Pelageya, is protected by their adult son, Pavel. Pavel later agrees to hide a small cache of handguns for local revolutionary socialists under the floorboards of the family home. His mother secretly observes this. Vlasov — a large, hulking man — is plied with vodka by agents of the Black Hundred, a reactionary group, who plan to use him as a thug against the instigators of a planned workers' strike at the factory. During the mayhem of the failed strike, Vlasov is accidentally shot to death by a revolutionary. Pelageya is devastated and pleads with her son to cooperate with the Tsarist police and army who are pressing his case. He refuses. Naively thinking that revealing her son's hidden cache will redeem him, Pelageya betrays her son's secret to the authorities. He is, nevertheless, arrested and tried for sedition under the cool gaze of a bust of Nicholas II and the contemptuous glare of local bourgeois society. His judges are bored with the proceedings and his defense council is incompetent. He receives a sentence of heavy labor for life. Pelageya now makes common cause with the revolutionaries who are planning to foment a prison break during a May Day protest. In the prison yard, the inmates overwhelm the guards and escape. Pavel escapes separately and makes a daring flight across the river on ice floes while under fire. Pavel and his mother are briefly reunited, but he is shot dead by Tsarist troops in the very act of embracing her. Now thoroughly radicalized, Pelageya becomes a defiant standard-bearer holding aloft the socialist flag and is gloriously trampled to death under the hooves of a cavalry charge. A final montage presents images of fortresses, churches, factories and, lastly, the battlements and towers of the Kremlin with the same flag waving triumphantly on top.

▸▸ A Study in Scarlet is a 1933 American Pre-Code mystery thriller film directed by Edwin L. Marin and starring Reginald Owen as Sherlock Holmes and Anna May Wong as Mrs. Pyke. The title comes from Arthur Conan Doyle's 1887 novel of the same name, the first in the Holmes series, but the screenplay by Robert Florey was original.

The 1933 film titled A Study in Scarlet, starring Reginald Owen as Sherlock Holmes and Anna May Wong as Mrs Pyke, bears no plot relation to the novel. Aside from Holmes, Watson, Mrs. Hudson, and Inspector Lestrade, the only connections to the Holmes canon are a few lifts of character names (Jabez Wilson, etc.). The plot contains an element of striking resemblance to one used several years later in Agatha Christie's novel And Then There Were None.

Despite her billing, Anna May Wong only appears on screen for less than ten minutes. Reginald Owen had played Dr. Watson in Sherlock Holmes the previous year; Owen was one of a small number of actors to play both Holmes and Watson. Some of the other actors who played both roles are Jeremy Brett, who played Watson on stage in the United States prior to adopting the mantle of Holmes on British television, Howard Marion-Crawford, who played Holmes on British radio and Watson on American television, Carleton Hobbs, who played both roles in British radio adaptations, and Patrick Macnee, who played both roles in US television movies.

PLOT

Humpty Dumpty is incredibly wealthy, sitting on his gold every day. But it's not enough for him. He wants more and more. He catches a glimpse of the sun and believes it's made of gold -- leading him to command his subjects to build a wall so that he can reach the sun. His people tried to warn him of the dangerous truths, but he didn't listen! When Humpty Dumpty attempted to break the sun so gold can come out, instead flames and lightning appeared, attacking Humpty Dumpty. The sun's power, knocks down Humpty Dumpty's palace wall, causing him to fall and shatter to pieces. The people put the broken shells back on, but when the crown was put back on, Humpty Dumpty collapsed. The classic rhyme is then sung:

"Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall
Humpty Dumpty had a great fall
All the king's horses and all the king's men
Couldn't put Humpty together again"

The Four Troublesome Heads (French: Un homme de têtes, literally "A Man of Heads"), also known as Four Heads Are Better Than One, is an 1898 French silent film directed by Georges Méliès.

PLOT
A magician enters the frame and stands between two tables. He removes his own head and puts it on one of the tables, where it starts talking and looking around. The magician repeats the action twice, with a new head appearing on his shoulders each time, until four identical heads are presented at once. The magician then plays a banjo, and all four heads sing along. He then bashes two of the heads with his banjo over their obnoxious singing, making them disappear. He then takes off his head and tosses it aside before taking the other head from the second table, tossing it in the air and it lands back onto his neck. He bows to the viewers, bids them farewell and then strolls off.

PRODUCTION
Méliès himself plays the magician in the film, which takes advantage of his sense of rhythm, his tendency for elegant gestural movements, and his talent for mime. The Four Troublesome Heads features one of the first known uses of multiple exposure of objects on a black background on film, a special effect Méliès went on to use prolifically. It also marks the first known time Méliès filmed living heads or other body parts separated from the rest of the body, which would become a favorite motif of his. Here, the trick was handled using substitution splices and four separate exposures.
The film was released by Méliès's Star Film Company and is numbered 167 in its catalogues. An illegal print of the film, copied without authorization from Méliès, was released in America in 1903 by Siegmund Lubin under the title Four Heads Are Better Than One. Film critic William B. Parrill, reviewing silent films in the 2010s, called it "doubtless a wonder when it appeared, the first of a wonderful comic line which produced not only detachable body parts but also the replication of any number of magical reproductions of [Méliès's] own image."

Faust – A German Folktale (German: Faust – Eine deutsche Volkssage) is a 1926 silent film produced by Ufa, directed by F. W. Murnau, starring Gösta Ekman as Faust, Emil Jannings as Mephisto, Camilla Horn as Gretchen/Marguerite, Frida Richard as her mother, Wilhelm Dieterle as her brother and Yvette Guilbert as Marthe Schwerdtlein, her aunt. Murnau's film draws on older traditions of the legendary tale of Faust as well as on Goethe's classic 1808 version. Ufa wanted Ludwig Berger to direct Faust, as Murnau was engaged with Variety; Murnau pressured the producer and, backed by Jannings, eventually persuaded Erich Pommer to let him direct the film.

Faust was Murnau's last German film, and directly afterward he moved to the US under contract to William Fox to direct Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans (1927); when the film premiered in the Ufa-Palast am Zoo in Berlin, Murnau was already shooting in Hollywood. It has been praised for its special effects and is regarded as an example of German Expressionist film.

PLOT

The demon Mephisto has a bet with an Archangel that he can corrupt a righteous man's soul and destroy in him what is divine. If he succeeds, the Devil will win dominion over earth.

The Devil delivers a plague to the village where Faust, an elderly alchemist, lives. Though he prays to stop the death and starvation, nothing happens. Disheartened, Faust throws his alchemy books in the fire, and then the Bible too. One book opens, showing how to have power and glory by making a pact with the Devil. He goes to a crossroads as described in the book's procedure and conjures up the forces of evil. When Mephisto appears at the roadside, he induces Faust to make a trial, 24-hour bargain with the Devil. Faust will have Mephisto's service till the sand runs out in an hourglass, at which time the Devil will rescind the pact. At first, Faust uses his new power to help the people of the village, but they shun him when they find out that he cannot face a cross. They stone him and he takes shelter in his home.

Faust then makes a further deal with Mephisto, who gives Faust back his youth and offers him earthly pleasures and a kingdom, in return for his immortal soul. Mephisto tempts Faust with the vision of a beautiful woman. He then takes him to a wedding feast in Parma, to meet the subject of his vision, an Italian Duchess. Faust departs with her, leaving the Devil to kill her groom. Just as Faust is making love to her the sands run out. He is obliged to seal the deal permanently in order to continue his love-making; he is Mephisto's forever.

Faust soon grows weary of debauchery and yearns for "Home". Here Faust falls in love with an innocent girl, Gretchen, who is charmed into loving Faust by a golden chain left by the Devil.

Faust comes to Gretchen's room. The devil rouses the mother who sees them and drops dead from shock. The devil then incites her soldier brother, Valentin, to run home to catch her lover. Valentin and Faust fight a duel. The Devil intervenes and stabs Valentin in the back. He then goes around town shouting "murder". Faust and Mephisto flee on the back of a hellish steed.

Valentin condemns Faust for his murder and his sister as a harlot in his dying breath. She is put in the stocks and subjected to jeering. The girl has a child (by Faust) and ends up in the streets. In a blizzard she sees a vision of a warm cradle and lays her child down on the snow, where the child dies. Soldiers find her and she is sent to the stake as a murderess. Faust sees what is happening and demands Mephisto take him there. Faust arrives just as the fire has been started to burn his lover. Faust wishes he had never asked to have his youth back. Mephisto smashes the mirror with Faust's reflection and he loses his youth. He runs through the assembled mob towards Gretchen; and it is as an old man that Faust throws himself onto the fire to be with his beloved.

Gretchen recognizes Faust and sees him in her heart as a young man again as the fire consumes them together. Their spirits rise to the heavens. The angel reveals to Mephisto that he has lost the bet because Love has triumphed over all.

Poor Cinderella (original title as Betty Boop in Poor Cinderella) is a 1934 Fleischer Studios animated short film featuring Betty Boop. Poor Cinderella was Fleischer Studios' first color film, and the only appearance of Betty Boop in color during the Fleischer era. It is the final animated short presented by Max Fleischer and at Fleischer Studios, and the first Paramount Picture series animated short in color.

PLOT

Cinderella (portrayed by Betty Boop) is a poor young woman forced to be the virtual slave of her two ugly stepsisters, who demand she prepare them for the prince's ball while she is left at home to lament her spinsterdom, singing that no one loves her and that her only respite is her dreams, but she holds out hope of being a real princess someday. Cinderella is visited by her fairy godmother, who grants her wish to attend the prince's ball, giving her beautiful clothes, a carriage, and the traditional glass slippers, with the warning that she must leave by midnight before the spell expires.

During the ball, Prince Charming, provoked by a mallet-wielding Cupid, descends the staircase in royal fashion and is instantly smitten by Cinderella. The two have a wonderful time dancing together, but when midnight strikes, she rushes out of the ball, leaving behind her shoe. The prince proclaims that whoever can fit her foot into the shoe shall be his wife; all the maidens in the land line up to try, with none in the queue able to fit until Cinderella arrives and fits into the shoe easily. The two are married, and the ugly stepsisters are left to argue with each other until the end title's doors smack their heads together.

The Ten Commandments is a 1923 American silent religious epic film produced and directed by Cecil B. DeMille. Written by Jeanie MacPherson, the film is divided into two parts: a prologue recreating the biblical story of the Exodus and a modern story concerning two brothers and their respective views of the Ten Commandments.

Lauded for its "immense and stupendous" scenes, use of Technicolor process, and parting of the Red Sea sequence, the expensive film proved to be a box-office hit upon release. It is the first in DeMille's biblical trilogy, followed by The King of Kings (1927) and The Sign of the Cross (1932).

PROLOGUE

The opening statement explains that modern society mocked and laughed at Judeo-Christian morality until it witnessed the horrors of the World War; it then beseeches the viewer to turn back to the Ten Commandments, describing them as "the fundamental principles without which mankind cannot live together. They are not laws—they are the LAW." From there, the Book of Exodus is recounted.

At the point of the Ten Commandments, Moses is seen on Mount Sinai, having witnessed the commandments given as writing in the sky, which he then manually carves into stone tablets. When he returns, he finds that the Israelites have fallen into debauchery and built a golden calf to worship. Furiously, he smashes the commandments, deeming the Israelites unworthy. An Israelite man and woman seducing each other find, to the horror of both, that the woman has hideous sores covering her hands and is now unclean, prompting her to beg Moses to be cleansed. Moses calls on the power of God and the calf is destroyed with lightning.

PLOT

Two brothers, John and Dan McTavish, live with their mother Martha, a strict believer in the Biblical law. The two sons make opposite decisions; John follows his mother's teaching of the Ten Commandments and becomes a carpenter living on meager earnings, and Dan, now an avowed atheist who is convinced that the Commandments never offer him anything, vows to break every one of them and rise to the top.

As Martha evicts Dan from her house, he and John stop for a bite to eat at a lunch wagon. There, Mary, an impoverished but beautiful young woman, steals a bite of Dan's sandwich and triggers a madcap chase after her. She takes refuge in the McTavish house, where John convinces his mother to take Mary in for the night. John also convinces Dan to set aside his grievance and stay; he also introduces Dan to Mary. Dan quickly wins Mary over with his freewheeling ways. Martha's strict observance of the Sabbath causes friction when Dan and Mary begin dancing on a Sunday, and though John tries to convince his mother to show grace, Dan and Mary decide it is time to run off together.

Now out of money, Dan learns that a muckraker tabloid has threatened to expose his operation. His business partner recommends a $25,000 bribe to stop publication, but lacking the funds, Dan instead attempts suicide—his partner stops the attempt, solely because he refuses to take the fall alone, and demands the money. He goes to Sally's brothel to take back a set of expensive pearls he gave her, but Sally refuses and reveals herself to have smuggled herself into the country from Molokai through a contraband jute shipment and is thus infected with leprosy, thus likely infecting Dan as well. In rage, he kills Sally and attempts to flee to Mexico on a motorboat (the S.S. Defiance), but rough weather sends him off course and he crashes into a rocky island. His dead body is seen among the wreckage. Mary, fearing herself to also be infected, stops by John's office to say goodbye, but John insists on taking her in. As he reads Mary the New Testament story of Jesus healing the lepers (re-enacted on screen, with Jesus shown only from behind), a light shows Mary's hands not to be scarred at all, and that her perceived scars had disappeared in the light—a metaphor for the healing salvation of Christ.

ABOUT

All's Fair at the Fair is a seven-minute cartoon released in 1938. A Color Classic produced by Max Fleischer, it was distributed by Paramount.

PLOT

A couple visits the fair grounds where the World's Fair is being held, and find themselves participating in a series of adventures with the ultra-modern mechanism operated by robots. Finally, they reach the dance pavilion, and the wife and husband each are taken in hand by robots and whirled around the floor. Other mechanical gags give them a marvelous meal, beauty and barber treatments, and clinical attention to restore their youth.
