Does metformin help or hurt bodybuilding progress? What should you monitor if you use Equipoise? Can bodybuilders still make meaningful gains after 50? And do SGLT2 inhibitors have a place in harm reduction for enhanced athletes?
In this video, Big Paul breaks down some of the biggest questions around bodybuilding, PEDs, health, and longevity, with a practical focus on balancing progress with risk management.
Topics covered include metformin, insulin sensitivity, IGF-1 and muscle growth; Equipoise and its potential effects on estradiol, hematocrit, hemoglobin, red blood cells, creatinine and cystatin C; why complicated first cycles often create more problems than progress; allopregnanolone and its potential role in sleep, anxiety and high-androgen environments; SGLT2 inhibitors for glucose control, kidney protection and cardiovascular health; immune support for bodybuilders; and how training, nutrition, recovery and PED use may need to change after age 50.
Paul also explains why he prefers a more conservative approach to exercise selection as lifters age, why sleep and micronutrient status matter for immune function, when a mini-cut may make sense versus committing to a full cut, and why getting lean can create a better runway for future growth.
And to finish things off, he shares five metal tracks from his gym playlist that always deliver when itโs time to train hard.
If youโre interested in bodybuilding, hypertrophy, PED education, bloodwork, harm reduction, longevity, contest prep, or staying muscular and healthy as you get older, this video covers a lot of ground.

Combine a leg curl with a hip hinge, focus on actually contracting and loading the hamstrings, and donโt sacrifice execution just to move heavier weight. Training them consistentlyโaround twice per week in this exampleโcan also help provide enough quality volume.

Depleted glycogen and changes in water retention can make you look smaller and can also affect body-composition readings. The real concern is when the calorie deficit, cardio, and fat-loss drugsโespecially T3โare pushed too aggressively.
The video also explains why bringing food back up around the show can quickly restore fullness, with many competitors returning close to where they were within a few weeks post-show.

The conversation then moves into PEDs and bodybuilding pharmacology, including low-dose tren during a cut vs. bulk, YK-11, frequent injection schedules, clenbuterol side effects, ephedrine vs. clen, old-school pre-workouts, biological hormones, and how Paul would have approached cycling differently when he was younger.
We also cover common issues lifters face after years of training: arthritis pain, BPC and TB peptides, tennis elbow, golferโs elbow, shoulder pain, sleep and cardiovascular concerns, and Paulโs experience with a prostate procedure for BPH.
If youโre interested in bodybuilding, muscle growth, strength training, PED discussion, contest prep, injury management, powerlifting, or the enhanced bodybuilding world, thereโs a lot packed into this one.

Before adding more sets or more training days, make sure youโre creating proper tension in the muscle youโre actually trying to grow. Once technique is dialed in, smaller muscle groups like the arms can often handle more frequency and volume.

GH Causes GYNO? How Good Is Turinabol? Offseason Mitochondrial PeptidesAnabolic Bodybuilding | Big Paul2026-09-04 | Can HGH cause puffy or sensitive nipples even when estrogen is under control? Is โlow-dose trenโ actually worth adding to TRT? What PED options carry a lower virilization risk for women? And where do GLP-1s fit when the goal is bodybuilding, fat loss, or metabolic health?
In this Anabolic Q&A, Big Paul answers member questions covering performance enhancement, bodybuilding, training, nutrition, blood work, health markers, and harm reduction.
We get into HGH and IGF-1, gyno concerns, low-dose trenbolone with TRT, Anavar and other PED considerations for women, Turinabol for bodybuilding vs. endurance performance, GLP-1 drugs during contest prep and the offseason, maintaining protein intake when appetite is suppressed, cholesterol management while using PEDs, GH-related sleep changes, and more.
Training also gets plenty of attention. Paul breaks down how he structures a Push/Pull/Legs A/B split when a single leg day becomes too taxing. He also discusses mind-muscle connection, mechanical tension, strict form, training volume, progressive overload, and why constantly changing training styles may hold back progress.
Finally, the conversation goes beyond the physical side of bodybuilding with a discussion about mental health, coaching and the importance of keeping a mind, body, and overall life in balance.
Topics covered include: โข HGH, IGF-1 and nipple sensitivity/gyno concerns โข Low-dose trenbolone for โTRT+โ approaches โข Anavar, Primo, NPP and growth hormone โข GLP-1s for fat loss, bodybuilding and metabolic health โข Peptides, nootropics and offseason supplementation โข Cholesterol, LDL, ApoB and cardiovascular risk reduction โข Growth hormone and sleep quality โข Mind-muscle connection, training blocks, volume and progressive overload

We break down what really happens after a hard cut when bodyweight jumps 15โ20+ pounds, why that weight isnโt necessarily all body fat or new contractile muscle, and how glycogen, minerals, intracellular fluid, and improved training performance can contribute to a bigger, fuller physique.
We also cover how to transition from a rebound into an offseason mass phase, when a lean bulk actually makes sense, how to minimize unnecessary fat gain while increasing food, and why your metabolism can become a moving target as calories and carbohydrates rise.
For fat loss, Paul explains why doing too much too soon can backfire, how to preserve as much lean body mass as possible during a cut, the importance of protein, essential fats, cardio and a controlled calorie deficit, plus his perspective on GLP-1s and other fat-loss tools in bodybuilding.
Other topics include:
โข Rebound vs. offseason bodybuilding phases โข How long a productive mass-gaining phase may last โข Glycogen supercompensation and rapid post-cut weight gain โข Lean bulking without excessive body fat โข When you may be too high in body fat to start gaining โข Breaking through a fat-loss plateau โข Reverse dieting and increasing carbohydrates after a long cut โข Maintaining muscle while losing body fat โข GLP-1s and bodybuilding physique outcomes โข Peak week electrolyte balance, sodium, hydration and carb loading โข Why extreme water and electrolyte manipulation can ruin your look โข Body-fat ranges for rebounds and growth phases โข Competing in bodybuilding after age 50 โข Why first-time competitors can benefit from a knowledgeable coach โข TRT, anabolic steroids and performance-enhancement risk reduction โข Bloodwork, estradiol management and the lowest-effective-dose mindset โข Recovery considerations after injury or surgery

Heavy shoulder presses donโt always need to come first.
Most lifters already give their front delts plenty of work from pressing. If you want that round, capped shoulder look, putting more focus on lateral delt and rear delt development can make a big difference.
Prioritize your weaker shoulder heads first, then add front-delt work based on what you actually needโwhile keeping long-term shoulder health in mind.

In this episode, we dig into what happens when coming off a GLP-1 after extended use, including appetite, gastric emptying, elevated resting heart rate, and why long-term use may not make sense for every bodybuilder. We also break down magnesium glycinate, elemental magnesium, supplement labels, timing, and whether thereโs any real benefit to mega-dosing or splitting doses throughout the day.
Then we get into several heavily debated PED topics: whether very low-dose Tren can still produce noticeable results, Tren cough and subcutaneous injections, why Deca-only and low-test/high-Deca cycles keep coming back into bodybuilding discussions, options for high aromatizers, Equipoise and Primo considerations, and the unconventional โSHBG protocolโ involving estrogen replacement with compounds like Tren or DHB.
Training and nutrition get plenty of attention too. Big Paul explains how to choose the best horizontal pulling movements for back thickness by comparing stimulus, fatigue, and injury risk rather than blindly chasing heavy barbell rows. We also cover carb cycling and binge eating on high-carb days, breaking through a fat-loss plateau, cardio during contest prep, getting stage-ready six weeks out, posing, Anadrol use around training, and how to structure calories and carbohydrates when trying to transition from getting lean into a productive rebound and lean gaining phase.
Topics discussed include: โข GLP-1 discontinuation and bodybuilding โข Magnesium glycinate vs elemental magnesium โข Low-dose Tren and Tren cough โข Subcutaneous vs intramuscular injections โข Deca-only and low-test/high-Deca cycles โข Testosterone, Primo, EQ, Tren, and aromatization โข Anadrol and pre-workout use โข Lean gaining, rebounds, and carbohydrate intake

Youโll hear people recommend ratios like 1:1, 2:1, or 1:2 between different PEDs, but these should only be viewed as starting points โ not a one-size-fits-all formula.
The reason is simple: everyone responds differently to these compounds.
For example, a low dose of Primobolan may lower someoneโs estrogen too much, while another person may require a higher dose to maintain their estrogen levels within range.
Regular bloodwork is essential to understand how your body responds and to make informed adjustments over time.

You might be missing a key difference.
Lower body muscles can often handle more training volume and may require a different approach because of their size, exercise demands, and recovery needs. While fiber type plays a role, itโs not the only factor that determines how you should train.
One of the most important things to look at is your total weekly volume. If your legs are lagging, simply giving them more quality work throughout the week is often the answer.
Train them more frequently, recover properly, and theyโll grow.

Many guys are going through major transformations, losing 50, 70, or even 100+ pounds of fat, and a transformation of that magnitude will often require more than 16โ20 weeks.
When fat loss starts to stall, even though it may sound counterproductive, I actually increase carbohydrate intake. After a long period of dieting, this is often enough to get fat loss moving again.

The guys who blow up in bodybuilding and make it to the top are the 1% of the 1%. But that doesnโt mean you canโt make incredible progress and become the best version of yourself.
Chances are, you have average genetics and an average ability to build muscle. But even average progress compounded over 5โ7 years can completely transform your physique.
And remember: most people donโt even work out consistently.
Itโs all about perspective. Stop comparing your progress to genetic outliers and focus on how far you can take yourself.

Itโs well known in the bodybuilding scene that nandrolone can make joints feel better. This is often attributed, at least in part, to increased water retention, which may make movements and impacts during training feel more comfortable.
But that relief can come at a cost. 19-nors can cause significant side effects in some people, including psychological effects such as increased anxiety. Thatโs one of the reasons nandrolone is generally better kept at a low dose rather than assuming more is better.
Less pain doesnโt necessarily mean the underlying problem is fixed.

Explaining Bodybuilding GeneticsAnabolic Bodybuilding | Big Paul2026-08-20 | How do you know if you actually have good bodybuilding geneticsโand how much do genetics really matter compared with training, nutrition, structure, recovery, and consistency?
In this Anabolic Q&A, Iโm answering your bodybuilding questions on muscle growth, fat loss, training, nutrition, health, and responsible performance enhancement. We get into everything from evaluating bodybuilding genetics and choosing home gym equipment to GLP-1 use, HGH, estrogen management, body-fat testing, bodybuilding research, and bringing up stubborn muscle groups.
We also discuss some of the realities that donโt always get enough attention: why PED response is only one part of bodybuilding genetics, how appetite and binge eating can derail a contest prep, why bodybuilding studies need to be interpreted carefully, and how physical health, hormones, training, and mental health can overlap.

Instead, prioritize good form, mechanical tension, and progressive overload.
Many top bodybuilders have been following the same routinesโand doing the same exercisesโfor years.
If you want to grow, focus less on exercise variety and more on executing each rep well, controlling the tempo, and progressively getting stronger over time.

In this deep-dive conversation with Molecular, we break down what makes Tren so unique, why bodybuilders continue to use it despite its notorious side-effect profile, and what the available research actually tells us about nitrogen retention, body composition, neurological effects, sleep, estrogen and progesterone signaling, kidney health, cardiovascular stress, and more.
We also discuss the surprisingly low doses examined in early human research, how Tren compares with compounds like Anavar, nandrolone, testosterone, Masteron, and EQ, and why dramatic changes in appearance donโt necessarily mean dramatically greater muscle growth.
Topics covered include:
โข Why Trenโs nitrogen-retention data stands out from other anabolic steroids โข Low-dose Tren and whether there may be benefits at doses far below typical bodybuilding protocols โข Why Tren can create such dramatic changes in body composition and โhardnessโ โข Anxiety, increased heart rate, blood pressure, insomnia, and other common side effects โข Why sleep can become especially problematic during contest prep and calorie restriction โข Trenbolone, neurotoxicity, cognitive health, and long-term exposure โข Progesterone receptor activity, gyno, lactation, and why prolactin may be misunderstood โข Estrogen signaling and why Tren can make hormone management complicated โข Kidney markers, cystatin C, liver enzymes, cholesterol, and cardiovascular remodeling โข Why adding more drugs to manage side effects can create even more problems โข Whether Tren actually belongs in an offseason bodybuilding program โข Why advanced competitors may view Tren very differently from newer enhanced lifters
Tren has an enormous reputation for a reasonโbut the same pharmacology that makes it effective can also make it extremely difficult to tolerate.
If you want a deeper understanding of trenbolone beyond gym folklore and bro science, this conversation goes into the mechanisms, research, real-world bodybuilding experience, and risk-versus-reward discussion in detail.

But in bodybuilding, if you truly want to build more muscle while maintaining a lower body-fat level long term, you have to commit to dedicated bulking and cutting phasesโthink 16โ20 weeks at a time.
Permabulking or permacutting wonโt lead to significant progress.
The key during a bulk is to keep your food quality high and your surplus controlled so you keep fat gain to a minimum.
During a cut, donโt crash diet. Keep the deficit reasonable, train hard, and give yourself enough time so you can retain as much muscle as possible.
Commit to the phase youโre in instead of constantly trying to stay somewhere in the middle.

We love getting into the nuances of bodybuilding because theyโre interesting to discuss. But the truth is, most of your progress comes from the boring stuff we already knowโand that most people simply donโt repeat consistently enough.
To really grow, you need at least: โข Mechanical Tension & Progressive Overload โข Prioritize Protein โข Eat in a Surplus โข Sleep at Least 7 Hours
The rest of the nuance can make a difference, but it wonโt give you nearly as much progress as consistently getting the basics right.

Fasting can help with fat loss during a cut, but it may be counterproductive if you're trying to retain as much muscle as possible.
You're already more likely to have lower glycogen levels while dieting, and adding an 18โ24-hour fast on top of that can leave you feeling weak or nauseous. That can make it harder to train well the next day, reducing the stimulus your muscles need to stick around.
Instead of not eating at all, you're usually better off getting enough protein and some carbs to support your training while keeping your overall calories in check.
You can still achieve similar fat loss without feeling horrible or sacrificing your performance the next day.

I usually feel my best during the first half of contest prep, around two weeks post-show during the rebound, and while cruising.
The rest of the time, Iโm either battling the fatigue that comes with forcing down a ton of food or dealing with the fatigue and high cortisol that come from a steep caloric deficit while trying to get the last bit of fat off and reach true stage condition.
There are definitely phases where you feel great, but a big part of bodybuilding is learning how to perform even when you donโt.

We dig into estradiol management on TRT, what really drives muscle hypertrophy beyond just testosterone levels, how IGF-1, SHBG, thyroid function, insulin sensitivity, liver health, micronutrients, and metabolic health can affect your ability to grow, and why optimizing your overall health may matter just as much as pushing anabolic hormones.
We also cover what it really takes to get below 10% body fat while preserving muscle, why getting stage lean becomes a completely different challenge, how to structure a hypertrophy-focused training phase, whether increased training frequency can help lagging muscle groups, and why exercise execution may be more important than simply adding more volume.
Other topics include:
โข Managing high estradiol on TRT and testosterone cycles โข SHBG, free testosterone, boron, and Tongkat Ali โข The physiological drivers of muscle hypertrophy โข Getting from 10% body fat to stage conditioning โข Training after a terrible night of sleep โข Improving lagging shoulders and biceps โข OTC fat burners and what actually matters for fat loss โข Equipoise, nandrolone, testosterone, and hormone management
One of the biggest themes in this episode: stop obsessing over the last 1% while ignoring the fundamentals. Training quality, nutrition, recovery, metabolic health, blood work, and intelligent programming all have to work together if you want to maximize muscle growth and physique progress.

Thereโs no one-size-fits-all approach to training. The best split is the one that fits your schedule, supports your goals, and allows you to recover properly.
Most importantly, it should be something you enjoy and can follow consistently over the long term.
Consistency will always matter more than choosing the โperfectโ split.

โข Water retention: ACE inhibitors & ARBs can reduce the hormonal signals that cause the body to retain sodium and water.
โข Increased sympathetic nervous system activity: Beta blockers can slow the heart rate and reduce the force of its contractions.
โข Vasoconstriction: Calcium channel blockers help relax and widen the blood vessels.
Understanding what is contributing to high blood pressure helps healthcare professionals choose the most appropriate treatment.

In this episode, Big Paul breaks down one of the biggest debates in the science-based hypertrophy community: whether a calorie surplus is necessary for optimal muscle growth. While body recomposition is possible under certain conditions, especially for beginners or people with higher body-fat levels, does โpossibleโ automatically mean โoptimalโ?
This discussion explores:
โข Building muscle in a calorie deficit โข Muscle growth at maintenance calories โข Body recomposition versus dedicated bulking and cutting phases โข Why beginners and advanced bodybuilders may require different approaches โข The relationship between body-fat levels, training performance, recovery, and hypertrophy โข Macronutrient distribution and nutrient partitioning โข Carb cycling, glycogen storage, and workout performance โข The difference between gaining productive bodyweight and simply getting fat โข What decades of competitive bodybuilding can teach us alongside controlled research โข Why maintenance calories are a constantly moving target
The goal is not to dismiss exercise science or promote reckless bulking. It is to examine whether a small, intelligently managed calorie surplus remains the most efficient strategy for experienced lifters trying to maximize muscle gain while minimizing fat accumulation.
Can someone become truly massive while staying at maintenance calories indefinitely? Or does meaningful long-term hypertrophy eventually require pushing food?
Share your experience and opinion in the comments. Keep the discussion respectfulโeven when you strongly disagree.

Around my workouts, I combine simple carbs with starchy carbs. This helps replenish glycogen and supports the insulin response and GLUT4 activity that move glucose into working muscles.
On high-carb days, I usually use a 50/50 split of starchy and simple carbs. On medium-carb days, I shift to roughly 75/25.
The goal is simple: fuel your training, support recovery, and put those carbs to work.

L-carnitine is an amino acid derivative with relatively low oral bioavailabilityโaround 15%. However, for most people following a typical bodybuilding diet, dietary intake may be enough to keep their L-carnitine stores replenished.
If your stores are low, supplementing for a few weeks may help restore them. But once your levels are adequate, taking it continuously may not provide much additional benefit.

Hydration levels, inflammation, food intake, glycogen stores, and even a recent workout can affect the results produced by body-fat machines.
Hydrostatic weighingโalso known as the dunk tankโis considered one of the more accurate methods. Because fat is more buoyant than lean tissue, people with less body fat tend to sink more. However, this type of testing can be difficult to find.
For most people, a practical alternative is working with an experienced coach who can assess their physique, track changes over time, and provide a consistent estimate.

In fact, many top-level bodybuilders have moved away from relying on exercises like barbell squats. Instead, they use movements such as leg presses, hack squats, lunges, and leg extensions to train their legs effectively with less spinal loading.
These exercises can help you build bigger legs while managing fatigue, reducing injury risk, and supporting longevity in bodybuilding.
The exercise matters, but how you perform it matters even more. Train with intent, prioritize proper form, and maintain tension on the target muscles.
