Two Gruesome Nightmares: Where Did They Come From? Wait for it.... Alison McMahon 2025-06-07 | What does this have to do with @projectbarleybrewery-lomit3887 (Taps & Grill - Redondo), you might ask?What does this have to do with #TheLighthouseCafe, you might ask.What does this have to do with @soundslikepedro you might ask.No one could be more surprised than I.One thing I noticed in these two dreams is that both have large somewhat communal houses in them. One is wooden and I'm on the second story. It is like a Southeast Asian large rubber plantation structure, so it may be on stilts. The other structure has a concrete foundation with steps up to the front door. it is also two-story, but I was on the first floor. Both have long halls along the right side, with rooms and doors along the left of the hall. In the first, people come into the large room from the hall; in the second, the suits (men in black & men in grey) come out of the hall into the large front room and escort me down the hall to a large mystery room at the end of the hall for some sort of hostile interrogation. What I found in the suitcase outside was presumably a part of someone they had had in that back room. Both have a lot of green outside, in the first, abundant and tall tropical greenery; in the second, a vast well mowed lawn, on an incline, like Midwestern large family homes of the early 20th century (though the structure itself is more late 20th century big box style, plaster outside).Gruesome and frightening dreams, but as you will see at the end, the source for them was merely a part of a nice quiet watercolor figure painting, not the least bit frightening, which I have been tweaking for about six weeks, and apparently weighing heavily on my mind.The parallels of two large buildings with long hallways on the right and numerous rooms on the left are variations on a theme to think about. I just noticed that the men were "suits" and a suit-case was on the green grass outside.I've had three nightmares since the end of April, the first of which was about an experience the days before, and these two are from May.Images from the subconscious often have quite a sense of humor.#alisonmcmahon #nightmarestories I #dreaminterpretation #whenmyartkickedmyass

Alison McMahon 2025-05-08 | I'm using domestic liquor and imported liquor and travel and Customs Duty as examples. How much/many can you bring in duty-free?To clarify: import taxes are paid by the importer, not the exporter. The exporter sells the product at their domestic price, the price at which it can be bought in its country of origin. When it comes into the U.S., it is taxed (like Tea was). The importer pays the tax to the US Government, and the importer passes the extra cost on to the consumer by increasing the selling price. The American taxpayer is welcome to buy imported goods if he wants to pay extra, and that extra amount is the import tax, collected by the US government, not the exporter.You've seen duty-free shops? French perfumes are expensive because they are heavily taxed. When you travel in international airports, once you have checked through for your international flight, you can shop duty-free. When you return to the US, you have a limit of items to bring in duty-free. Liquor is limited to two bottles. You fill out a customs declaration on the plane before landing back in the U.S. If you bring more without declaring it, the excess will be confiscated. If you bring more and conceal it, you are smuggling contraband.When you drive down to Mexico and return across the border to the U.S., you go through a US port of entry/ border check. They look in your face and in your car, through your window, and ask you, "Do you have anything to declare?" You say no, or if you do have duty free items, you say yes, and tell them what you have. "Yes: I have two bottles of Tequila." Two bottles is the duty-free limit. Who knows what it is now. If you're looking sheepish or squirrelly, they might look in your trunk to see what you're hiding (aka attempting to smuggle). At best, you'll only be pulled over and sat in a room while they search your car further for contraband.When you walk across the border, same. However, if you have dark hair and brown eyes, you might have some questioning. I remember crossing on foot with a Jewish friend. The agent said to me, "Go ahead, I know you're a Paddy," and talked to my friend a bit before she got through. Another time. with the same friend, we had to go through an internal checkpoint off the 405. The agent looked at her and decided he needed to go through the trunk of my car. lifting out the baby stroller and accessories for my friend's son (he must have been with us too), looking for people we might have hiding in the trunk. It hurt. Nonetheless, we took them good-naturedly and wryly, and the agents were polite. It took a while to joke it off in the car driving home.Going into Canada. four of us in a VW or a compact car, we were detained in the border patrol waiting room while they tossed the car for contraband. Nerve-wracking and time-consuming.These events were in the late 1960s, early 1970s. It must be absolute Hell now, with a hostile punitive government installed. #peopleunclearontheconceptI'm trying to provide real-world examples so people can understand just where the extra money, tax money, goes. It goes out of your pocket and into the US government coffers, which are being raided by the grifter-in-chief; so MAGA, buy imported products to send your tax dollars to Donnie, all cleaned and laundered.Dolls and Christmas. Make it the Year We Made Soft Dolls for our Girls, or sewed new wardrobes for the dolls they already have. Repurpose the fabric you already have, including that in clothes you don't wear anymore, or which have worn spots or rips.Make it a handmade Christmas.It might be fun for this year's generation of girls to have a 2025 Christmas rag doll in their collections. "Oh yes. that was the year a spiteful toddler president tried to get us to give him more money by taxing Santa Claus. My mom and my aunt/ my Grandma and mom/the lady down the street" made all my American Girl's clothes from our old clothes, and I treasure the love they put into it for me."Good doll clothes patterns are available on line. Simplicity and McCalls have their catalogs online now. Share the patterns you have. Check where things are made. Use what you have and buy American to avoid tariffs.If you don't mind paying US taxes, go ahead and buy imported goods. The extra cost money is not going to the sellers abroad. Tube Watercolor Chat VIII: Test Strips After 24 Days. Cheng Du Watercolors Are Holding Up Well.! Alison McMahon 2025-04-26 | Test strips went up in the window on 1 April 2025. This videoo was made on 25 April. 24 days in direct sunlight.The rose red seems to be an Alizarin Crimson: those burn out quickly in all watercolors. It is plant-based and so can also grow mold right on the paper in tropical climates!The Sap Green was an olive green at full intensity and is now more like a sap green. It would be diffucult to work with even knowing how it would change with time. watercolor is difficult enough as it is: because it is wet, the colors always look darker than they will when dry: when you spill water on your clothes, it's darker where the water is.The violet faded somewhat. The Green Lotus is actually a violet, so use that instead of the one labeled violet.They are back up in the window for further light testing.Interestingly, the two that burned out, the rose red (a red-violet) and the Sap Green (a yellow-green) have a relationship on the color wheel: they are opposites on the color wheel and are tertiary colors. Keep your pigment fresh in the tube and load sparingly, not in the bottom of the well).The folding palette boxes in school are actually travel palettes. The pigments are in pans so you csn pick the color and put it in the lid with water for use. Not made to be pools of degraded pigment of uncontrolled intensity. Those schoolroom boxes have created a huge misunderstanding of how watercolor works.When you get up into high-end watercolors, you'll see why we conserve pigment in the tube.Even if they dry out in the tube, you can peel the tube off and use chunks of pigment in your palette, anchored at the top edge of the well. Old watercolors never die -- unless you stroke them to death in the pan.Not testing color fastness with this page. This is the second "never do but I just did:" When I sign a piece, it's done. I don't sign and date work until I have gazed at it in different places, in photos, in video and am sure it's done. It's a helpful discipline.This one I signed in the bar, which I do sometimes. I worked on this a little several times after signing it. I put my sketch/drawing chop on to indicate it was done, took pictures, made & posted youTube video, watched it on the big tv screen and still had to go in with the tweaks I'm making in this video.It's done.
