Thousands of people gather in the Italian town of Ivrea, to pelt each other with oranges, as part of the tradition known as the “Battle of the Oranges.”
Participants dressed in battle costumes divide into teams, either on foot or in carts, and hurl over 220,000 kilograms (500,000 pounds) of oranges at each other.
The origins of the battle are not clear – one theory traces it back to a medieval legend involving the uprising of townspeople against a tyrant, while another purports it is a re-enactment of the civil war between Napoleonic troops and the people of Ivrea.
The food fight, Italy's largest, is part of the annual Carnival of Ivrea.
