Elegant and yet, so obviously past its prime, the Hollywood Tower Hotel carries traces of something sinister and, in the same breath, intriguing. Its cracked stone edifice is evidence of the ensuing years, though some of Tinseltown’s more…jovial celebrities seem blissfully oblivious to such details, waving at fans from a sunny verandah above. Untamed vines climb snakelike up and around the ghosts of lavish courtyards and gardens now crawling with weeds. A once luxurious lobby now sits draped in cobwebs and coated with impermeable layer of dust. There’s no denying the eerie, abandoned feeling in this space, giving us goosebumps and a creepy, foreboding feeling. Like a movie star whose façade could not outlast the persistence of time, this place still retains remnants of its former splendor, and of the status it once held as the gathering place for Hollywood’s show business elite at the height of its golden age.
Today, we find a sort of haunting beauty in the space now occupied by nothing but the whispers of wind in the trees. It’s almost welcome, this sense of absence and nothingness, away from the bustling, unrelenting energy of Hollywood Studios beyond. Here, tranquility seems to transcend the present and enter a realm of the intangible, inviting us to wander into the entanglement of its enigma. Venturing deeper into the throes of our own curiosity, our technicolor world fades to black and white, and we are transported into another dimension entirely. Gravity and reality alike are suspended in time and space, and nothing but a little bit of Magic (and the foresight to just take the stairs next time) could see us back on the sun-soaked sidewalks of Sunset Boulevard, newly awoken from a very surreal dream…
