Sergio Guidetti, Director for Navy & Special Ships at T. Mariotti, introduces the Italian Navy's future "Olterra" SDO-SuRS (Special and Diving Operations – Submarine Rescue Ship) vessel. The interview was recorded during Sea Future 2025.

=====================

T. Mariotti in October 2025 celebrated the launch of the Olterra, the first vessel of the SDO–SuRS (Special and Diving Operations – Submarine Rescue Ship) program, destined for the Italian Navy. The event, held at the Genoa shipyard, marked a key milestone in the ship's construction and in the shipyard's history, marking the first military project undertaken by T. Mariotti.

The SDO-SuRS will have to autonomously conduct the search and location of a distressed submarines and rescue of its crew thanks to a new deployable rescue system allowing operations up to 600 meters and under development and procurement with a separate contract awarded to Saipem and DRASS, and the capability to alternatively accommodate a NATO-navies’ provided system such as the NATO Submarine Rescue System (NSRS) and Submarine Rescue Diving Decompression System (SRDS).

Ensure the role of support unit for the operations of the diving unit (GOS, Gruppo Operativo Subacquei, GOS) of the COMSUBIN Command. In this contest, in addition to main GOS activities including underwater works & inspections, salvage diving, submarine crew rescue and EOD/IEDD, the new SDO-SurRS will play a key role in supporting other Ministries such as for example in ensuring the surveillance and control of underwater infrastructures and deep water operations, as already conducted by the Anteo and GOS unit. Moreover, In addition to the Anteo and tomorrow the SDO-SuRs, the GOS unit also ensure a SPAG (Submarine Parachute Assitance Group) unit as a rapid deployment operators team to provide immediate intervention in case of submarine in distress;
Ensure the support unit role for operational and training activities in the amphibious/underwater domain for the special forces unit or Gruppo Operativo Incursori (GOI) of the COMSUBIN Command;
Act as mother platform for an expeditionary Special Forces Command in support of national and NATO operations;

Ensure the rescue and medical assistance to the civil underwater activities and disaster relief in case on needs as already demonstrated in various operations such as the Concordia accident.

The SDO-SuRS and its new generation submarine rescue system and saturation diving system will greatly expand the Italian Navy underwater capabilities in support of present and new generation U212 NFS submarines, as well as special forces and national underwater infrastructure security.
