In this video I test both the Video Devices Pix-E5H and the Atomos Shogun Flame external 10-bit ProRes 4:2:2 recording (550 Mbits/s) against a 4K camera's internal 8-bit H.264 4:2:0 recording (80 Mbits/s) to see the value of leveraging an external recorder to salvage what I see as the biggest challenge with internal long GoP recording - clarity in the dark areas of the image.
By exporting a clean 10-bit 4:2:2 4K image before internal heavy compression, do the external recorders salvage the dark areas of the image? Is there something else you need to worry about? Yes, apparently there are camera settings that can actually clip the dark areas of the image making the external recording even worse than the internal recording. I show these in the video.
