On 12 October 2021, Volocopter’s electric heavy-lift drone (better known as the VoloDrone, our cargo-carrying superstar) conducted its first-ever public flight at ITS World Congress 2021. At precisely 3:02 pm it took off from homePORT Hamburg for a 3-minute flight as part of Volocopter's flight testing efforts that saw it climb to a maximum altitude of 22 meters. The electric heavy-lift utility drone was equipped with a load box to simulate its delivery capabilities. What did we achieve during the VoloDrone test flight? Well, we showcased how the VoloDrone can be seamlessly integrated into the logistics supply chain. And we did this by working with our partner, international logistics leader DB Schenker, who became a strategic investor for Volocopter in early 2020. Together, we will be able to bring logistics services to people living in big cities across the globe. What did we learn? In a joint delivery demo with international logistics leader DB Schenker, urban air mobility pioneer Volocopter showcased how the VoloDrone commercial cargo drone model can be seamlessly integrated into the logistics supply chain. The duo demonstrated just how far they’ve come since DB Schenker became one of Volocopter’s strategic investors in early 2020. The 3-minute delivery drone test flight took off at precisely 3:02 p.m. from homePORT Hamburg and climbed to an altitude of 22 meters. For this delivery simulation, the electric heavy-lift utility drone was equipped with a load box placed squarely amid its landing gear. First, the delivery demo teams secured a Euro pallet-sized load to the box under the VoloDrone, which was followed by a smooth takeoff. The commercial cargo drone model then conveyed the payload to a DB Schenker Cargo Bike, next to which it effected a safe, smooth landing. Once the payload was transferred to the Cargo Bike, it continued on to its final destination under the area’s park deck, marking the completion of the fully electric, multimodal last-mile delivery. VoloDrone: Logistics Operations Mockup | Volocopter Volocopter 2021-07-01 | A Cargo Drone That’s a Payload Apart We conducted a joint static proof of concept (PoC) with DB Schenker at Messe Stuttgart with a view to launching VoloDrone ground operations in logistic centers. This was to create the first blueprint for electric small cargo drone ground operations in logistics alongside Fraunhofer Institute, a specialist in material flow and logistics support. The resulting blueprint will be the first of its kind to integrate VoloDrone operations in cargo logistics networks across the globe. During this experiment, we simulated scenarios for VoloDrone integration into a cargo logistics network by examining the ground processes for coding goods, assessing safe cargo loads, testing the automated supply of the small cargo drone through autonomous vehicles, and identifying other necessary pre-flight cargo checks. This helps us to determine safe, standard procedures for the employees on the ground preparing the VoloDrone for integration into tomorrow’s logistics networks. The VoloDrone, Volocopter's heavy-lift and versatile cargo drone, is a fully electric aircraft capable of transporting a 200 kg payload over a max. distance of up to 40 km. Moreover, this electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft features 18 rotors and motors that power its flights. Paris Air Forum 2021: First Flight in France | Volocopter Volocopter 2021-06-21 | During the 2021 Paris Air Forum, urban air mobility (UAM) pioneer Volocopter announced it had kicked off its test flight campaign in Paris. Volocopter & ADAC Luftrettung Test Multicopter Air Rescue System | Volocopter Volocopter 2020-10-14 | Just another science fiction hoax – or a soon-to-be reality that will help us rescue ever more human lives? In a feasibility study conducted by ADAC Luftrettung (German air rescue association) in late 2018 and supported by the charitable ADAC foundation, a multicopter was used in the first-ever staged rescue operation. Covering everything from the alert at the ADAC Luftrettung HEMS base to the emergency treatment of the patient on the scene, a real-life operation was staged. The findings of the research project are scheduled for publication next year. From then on, the theoretical and practical experiences gained have been applied to a real-life pilot project. Air Taxi at Helsinki International Airport – Volocopter Integrated in Air Traffic Management System Volocopter 2019-08-30 | On 29 August, 2019 at 11 am local time in Helsinki, the Volocopter performed a historic flight. The Volocopter 2X was integrated into the airspace of Helsinki international airport. This was the first time an eVTOL airtaxi has flown fully integrated into the air traffic management system at an international airport. The Volocopter 2X flew integrated into the #UTM and #ATM at Helsinki Airport. As the final of seven #GOF_USPACE demos within the Sesar Joint Undertaking, this was a big step towards safe and efficient integration of drones and airtaxis into airspace. Within the Single European Sky ATM Research (SESAR) Programme this demonstration is the final leg of the Gulf of Finland (GOF) u-space project showing how ATM and UTM systems enable Urban Air Mobility (UAM). Urban environments require reliable solutions to enable safe airspace operations given the increasing number of drones and manned aircraft over cities. The GOF U-space flight trial demonstrated how ATM and UTM can act in combination to enable safe and efficient air taxi operation in urban environments, including airports.
