Stretch and strengthen your core simultaneously with these "Intercostal Crunches" using a Coregeous® sponge ball from Tune Up Fitness®. Here, Jill Miller demonstrates an exercise that features both concentric and eccentric strengthening for your entire torso and abdomen. In particular you will experience the expansion and retraction of the ribcage as you extend and flex your spine over the ball.
This exercise is helpful to elongate the muscles and soft-tissue of the upper body while building strength for better posture. It will also help increase the volume of breath. Jill Miller On America Now - Tips For Staying Pain Free At Work TRANSCRIPT
“Fitness Guru Jill Miller says you don’t need pills for pain, you need movement — especially at the office “ says Leeza Gibbons, host of nationally syndicated show America Now with Leeza Gibbons and Bill Rancic.
Jill: “We spend so much of our day sitting at our desks. That sit leads to a slouch, which leads to pain. Here’s how to eliminate it.
“First of all, if you have to sit, sit right. Pelvis underneath your rib cage, skull over the ribs, and then reinforce that with strength.
[Jills arms raise above her head.] “Hands interlaced on the back of the head. Push your head firmly into the palms of your hands to stabilize. WHen you let go your head will [feel like its going to] levitate off your body and you will feel better posture.
“The forearm muscles from holding onto that mouse. That mouse, which isn’t lightweight, is like a toddler pulling you off to the side constantly. Take your Yoga Tune Up therapy balls or tennis balls, stick them in a tote, place them on your desk. Take your forearm and drive it between the inside of the balls. That rolling action will knead and compress those tight tissues. And you will be free of pain.
“Lastly, one of these areas that are unknown but causing us tons of agony are the muscles that connect your thumb to the rest of your hand. Plop your hand right on top of that ball, use the other hand for added pressure, and then mow the hand up and down letting the ball caress into that junction; go side to side; or my favorite, spin the ball in the palm like you’re juicing oranges. When you finish your hand will feel juicy and pliable.
This is how you stay pain-free at work.”
