Thailand is full of fascinating history from ancient ruins to more recent wars. The Ayutthaya Kingdom, The Death Railway (Burma Railway) in Kanchanaburi, The Bridge on the River Kwai and Erawan Waterfall National Park are full of stories and all tell us more about the history of Thailand. In this video I go inside the most historical places in Thailand.

The Ayutthaya Kingdom was a Siamese kingdom that existed in Southeast Asia from the 1280s to 1767 and it was centred around the modern-day city of Ayutthaya. It was the second capital of the Siamese Kingdom. During the 14th to 18th centuries, it grew to be one of the world's largest and most cosmopolitan urban areas and a center of global diplomacy and commerce. The Burmese destroyed it in 1767, burning most of the city to the ground and enslaving any remaining citizens. Nowadays, Ayutthaya is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The historical park offers ancient temples and ruins such as Buddha Head in Tree Roots, Wat Mahathat. I opted for a guided tour as I wanted to learn more about the history of this place and didn’t want to miss out on any of the important sites.

The Death Railway in Kanchanaburi also known as the Burma Railway was built during World War II for the Japanese army, which forced local labourers as well as prisoners of war to build 415km of railway connecting Burma to Thailand. During WWII, the Imperial Japanese Army had taken over Southeast Asia and accumulated tens of thousands of skilled and healthy prisoners of war. Over 100,000 people died during its 16-month construction between 1942 and 1943. The lack of hygiene, inadequate medical supplies, and regular beatings from Japanese and Korean guards made for abysmal working conditions. Most died from exhaustion, dysentery, infection, and malnutrition.

Later we made a decision to spend a few hours at the Erawan Waterfall National Park. This national park is one of the most popular in Thailand and offers unique and picturesque waterfalls, where you can swim. There are seven tiers and levels in total to get to each waterfall and require a hike. Afterwards we travelled to The Bridge on the River Kwai which is another must-see historical site in this province.
