This video illustrates the concept behind the shape of the grey foam indentor block used in the fold/thrust belt models on this page. The foam block is intended to represent the leading edge of a large anticlinorium (a generally anticlinal thrust unit with internal structures), which is the outermost thrust unit of a mountain belt's "core." Due to its size and support from the orogenic wedge behind it, this outer anticlinorium/thrust sheet is strong enough to remain intact and force shortening to be accommodated by detachments in foredeep sediments, forming a fold/thrust belt.
