Dumping fish to make room for more valuable catches is illegal in the EU. However, shocking footage and eyewitness accounts suggest that “highgrading” is still happening.
The absence of effective control mechanisms at sea means that there is little incentive for discard-prone vessels to stop dumping lower-value fish to make space for more valuable species.
To stop this hugely damaging practice, all vessels with high discarding risk should have cameras onboard to ensure transparency and protect ocean ecosystems.
