This guide is based on 5000+ hours of experience playing and doing challenge runs in the Souls series over the last 6 years, condensed into one complete video showcasing all of the mechanics of the combat system.
This guide covers combat in Dark Souls 1, Dark Souls 2, Dark Souls 3 and Elden Ring. Major spoilers for areas and bosses in those games are included, alongside a couple clips of Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice and Nightreign.
I will start with fundamentals for beginners and returning players, then dive into more complex combat mechanics with advanced tips and tricks along the way, and then give my insight as a long term player on how to survive and overcome the world of Souls games.

This build does not require any runes farming, you can reach the estimated level (125-135) just by playing through the main bosses.
It also doesn’t utilize consumables, so if you die against a boss, you can try again at full strength without having lost any precious materials for buffs (sleep pots for Godskin duo are the exception).
Disclaimer: This build focuses on optimizing items and buffs in synergy with the weapon's strengths in order to demolish everything in the player's path. This broken build effectively turns the game into easy mode for players who don't want to spend too much time building their DLC character or want to get Mohg out of the way quickly to access the DLC and is effectively a Mohg cheese. For a more measured and balanced experience, I recommend not using most of these buffs and just enjoying the weapon as it is.
I consider this as one of, if not the best strength build in Elden Ring.

This upload is an archive. The kill was originally done on February 25th, 2023, on Elden Ring (and Maliketh's) 1 year anniversary.
After 100 to 150 hours studying Maliketh for challenge fights and multiple guides for challenge/hitless communities, a final showdown of the culmination of the most optimal and aggressive strategies I've developped for this spectacular bossfight.
A solo battle against my favorite boss of the entire FromSoft series, Beast Clergyman / Maliketh the Black Blade, at Level 1, New Game +7 (max game difficulty), using a non upgraded base torch, and without talismans to confer more survivability or damage. The fight lasts 37 minutes (about 13:30 minutes of phase 1 and 24 minutes of phase 2) of no hit gameplay.
The mechanical mastery and the knowledge of the boss's behavior required to succeed this challenge are the following:
- Perfect knowledge of each of his attacks, follow-ups and mix-ups potential at every point of his combo trees. Often enough the boss will get stuck against a pillar or the edge of the arena mid-combo, and the positioning difference will affect the choice of his next attack, to which you will need to react in the fraction of a second.
- Knowing how to avoid a good portion of his attacks without rolling (strafes) to optimize stamina usage and have more time to punish, but also the roll timings for every attack in the rare case scenario where the boss gets stuck against terrain and make an attack impossible to strafe (numerous of those scenarios requiring a reaction/decision making time as short as 0.2-0.3 seconds).
- Mastery of spacing and positioning in order to be able to not only trigger desired attacks for better punish opportunities, but also perform optimized and more difficult variations of those strats. Example with his p1 melee combos for which it's optimal to to trigger his final ground stab for a charged attack: sneaking in extra hits during his attacks within the combo for more damage, as well as positioning in order to almost brush against the hitbox of the attack and perform a fully charged attack + a quick attack in the same window of opportunity.
- Active use of jumps as dodges allowing bonus hits (e.g above his double swipe in p1) and, in the various case scenarios where the character enter in collision with the boss during the jump, which pushes the character aside and changes timings, knowing how to manually reorient the jump mid-air to avoid falling back into the attack all the while inflicting an attack punish on Gurranq's head.
- Perfectly knowing the hurtbox of the boss and managing the lock-on in order to free-aim torch attacks (which otherwise miss a majority of the time because the reach is too short to touch Maliketh's slender model).
- Dealing on the fly with intricacies and other bugs of Maliketh's moveset unknown to the majority of the playerbase and runners, such as pseudo-random Destined Deaths from neutral, the glitched double spin, and more.
- And countless other details too hard to explain without falling into a deep technical jargon.

The stance-breaking (or posture, poise, stagger etc) system is one of Elden Ring's strongest mechanics, but it's often underused or associated exclusively with heavier weapons like colossals... but smaller weapons can be just as efficient to get those juicy staggers, and some like the club are even better at landing stance-breaks left and right! So let's put this mighty weapon to the test.
Build: Strength/endurance (exact stats spread shown after each major fight)
Weapon: Heavy Club + Cragblade
Support gear: Battle Axe [Golden Vow]
Talismans: Radagon's Soreseal, Ritual Sword Talisman, Green turtle talisman, Axe talisman, Viridian Amber Medallion +2 (once reaching Haligtree)
Bonus items: Strength-knot tear (+10 strength), Spiked crystal tear (increased charged attacks damage), Hero/Ronin armor set (don't ask me where I got the second one).
Note: This video has been on hold for a while, as such the footage was recorded on Elden Ring patch 1.09 and doesn't benefit from the poise breaks and critical hits buffs from patch 1.10. So if you're trying this build yourself, this means you'll do even more damage on critical attacks (backstabs/ripostes) than I did in this run!

The outcome was as balanced as expected with every boss melting in seconds and fights being effortlessly no damage, and most being first try (excepted... that one woops).
Are these claws balanced in their current state? No. Are they overpowered and should be nerfed? Probably, but they're fun to play so whatever :) Part 2 against optional bosses like Mohg and Malenia incoming eventually, maybe. Soon :tm:.

Full Challenge Run Rules :
- Level 1, +0 weapons (no upgrades)
- Solo, no summons
- No status effects (bleed/frost/poison/rot etc) or blackflame sources
- No Ashes of War/affinities (or infusions)
- No major glitches or boss cheeses, AI breaks etc
- No Great Runes, weapon buffs (greases or Ashes of War), or buffs besides the Wondrous Physics
- Melee only, No magic (exception on Fortissax to prove a point about how anti-melee this fight is). Throwing knives were allowed as a backup resource to maintain bosses posture in situations where their attack patterns align to provide them with a free poise reset.
- No taking damage/hits to bosses (exception Godskin Noble belly bump, due to being nigh impossible to react to in the context of an endurance parries-focused fight)
In this context, "All Remembrances/Required bosses" refer to all bosses giving a Remembrance and/or being required to reach a Remembrance boss (like Margit, Godskin Duo or Gideon Ofnir). No exceptions. The Leyndell sewers route with the fake Mohg bossfight was used in order to reach Deeproot depths and fight Lichdragon Fortissax. Enjoy !

Each bossfight was done with different setups and playstyles with a focus on cinematic fights over true efficiency from my usual challenge kills, and I think it turned out pretty well !

This is meant to be a "pure" fight condition to showcase as best as possible the most aggressive and latest strategies I've developed since the game release, including the new p2 follow up baits and incorporating throwing knives in the middle of his combo mixups to damage his posture and keep him from doing arbitrary poise resets via the projectile attacks, which is one of the main annoyances in prolonged phase 2 fights where ripostes damage are of important value. The fight being on 125% speed, on top of being a test of reflexes, also help prove these strats are safe and reliable, since they can be successfully pulled off even with much less time to react as long as the correct timing / positioning is respected.
For the sake of making the fight more intense, dynamic and reaction intensive, I used a speedhack contained within Cheat engine to set the game speed to 125%, or x1.25 speed. This affects the game engine itself, causing both the player and the boss to gain speed as well as accordingly increased stamina regeneration. As a result this also sped up the skybox cycle, the trees/grass moving, etc. It does not however speed up the audio files such as Maliketh's opening and death dialogue or his boss theme, which serve as proof of the entire game being in 125% speed and not simply the footage. This can be distinctly heard at the end of the kill where I turn the volume to max for it.

I considered adding a stagger counter on the top right corner for fun, but ultimately scrapped it because it was distracting from the beauty of some fights. Regardless, continuing the trend of staggering bosses at least once, most 2-3 times per fight. Even Radahn and his massive 200 poise did not wisthand the sheer poise damage despite how short the fight was.
Build : Cold/Heavy Great Mace + Cragblade ash of war
Talismans (equipped as slots get unlocked) : Radagon's soreseal, Axe talisman, Ritual sword talisman, Starscourge Heirloom, Old Lord's talisman for endgame fights

Wondrous physics flask : Greenburst (max stamina) and Spiked (enhanced charged attacks damage) tears, both found under the Minor Erdtree in Mistwoods.
Bonus spells/Incantations : Flame, Grant me Strength (found next to Fort Gael in Caelid).

Maliketh was already a glass cannon and suffered heavily from his low poise and health pool equal to Morgott's, a mid-game boss, and his damage and mobility do not compensate for it enough. With this latest patch, he suffers from it more than ever and what is otherwise a spectacular and mechanically amazing fight can be made into a complete joke with little to no effort. Please give the goodest boi some love, Fromsoft. This is getting ridiculous.
This was not even using physics flask to boost damage and being lvl 1. A leveled character can likely shred Maliketh to pieces within 30 seconds without much effort, now.

A solo, melee only fight at Rune Level 1 (RL1) in NG+7 (max new game cycle) of Radagon of the Golden Order, done without upgrading weapons, without auxiliary/status effects (frost, bleed, poison/rot etc), no buffs outside of the Great rune to wield Alabaster sword, and with no hits taken.
Phase 1 is very fun and good for multiple cr2 punishes since his attacks startups after recovery are slow enough to allow them, even his stomp somewhat. Phase 2 and 3 are where it gets annoying with the threat of cancelling a recovery with a retaliation teleport and especially the quick teleport memes. You are forced to fight much more passive during later phases, and his tendency to teleport around at all ranges to spam spells and get free poise resets, again, don't help ramping up the pace in any way. I had some faster attempts where I was more aggressive but choked on 15-10% health left to teleports or flying aoes timing modified by walls, so I played carefully the end of this fight to make sure it wouldn't happen this time around.

This is a revisited kill with the intent to showcase more aggressive gameplay with a greatsword for comfort instead of the clunky commander's standard. This used to be a popular and decent challenge in previous Souls games, but much harder in Elden Ring to the abysmally low damage and almost non-existent scaling of fists. Hence it's considered by many as the ultimate challenge on ER and the reason why barely any fists only kill has been done so far excluding a couple early game bosses.
This was a fun and slightly messy kill with a bunch of flasks lost to jump direction memes in p1 and glitched spins in p2, but overall satisfying. Special thanks to Youtube's garbage music playlist system deciding to stop playing mid-fight. Good thing Maliketh's p2 OST compensates for it.
Build : RL 299 with stats spread out mostly on strength/dexterity, endurance and vigor.
Talismans : Blue dancer charm, Ritual sword talisman, Green turtle, Ritual shield talisman
Bonus items : No armor, No Blasphemous Claw (obviously as it does massive damage upon parry which would go against the point of the fists only challenge).

This weapon is fun and the double cr2 wakeup after riposte insanely strong, however it's not safe to do in phase 2 as it leaves players vulnerable to getting knocked down by a roar and ruining a no hit attempt. Stupidly overpowered on base NG, more balanced but still strong on max NG.

Another redo of the previous meme kills, only a day after the latest one. Having done previously a Maliketh kill on 150% and 175% speed using Cheat Engine, this is now 200% ingame speed with the double speed limit breached. As usual, still on RL1 NG+7 and no hits taken.
Phase 1 was a nightmare at this speed, and the projectiles attacks in phase 2 very difficult to deal with too. This specific attempt ended up not giving me any opportunities to use Blasphemous Claw parries to deal massive damage to p2, making it longer with much more attacks to dodge and react to, so I'm very glad this ended up being the victorious attempt !

#EldenRing #Level1 #speedrun #veryfast #200%
This was much harder than 150%, with some attacks like the Disengage slash becoming unreactable due to the roll-on-release nature of ER dodging... you physically don't have time to press and release the roll in time because of the attack being next to instant. Is 200% possible ? Honestly maybe, but that would be guaranteed to be an experience.

Metal Gear Rising Revengeance is a fantastic game I would 100% recommend to get for normal playthroughs, however for challenge runs the game is quite janky and old (especially the terribly outdated camera and parry system) and doesn't work too well on PC between the Konami code only working with controllers and most recording softwares like Nvidia shadowplay needing some scuffed manipulations of the graphic settings in order to function. Still, the bossfights are worth the detour and the gameplay is satisfying overall.

The character was level 16 for this with Godrick's great rune, base level with points spent only in endurance to simulate what a leveled character built for colossal weapons would be using. This kill was improvised on the spot so apologies for the neighbors drilling and hello to my friend @BigDBrian who was hanging out in vc with me while I was doing this.
The general strategy I believe is safe for a colossal fight : Wait for combos enders in phase 1 (specifically the rocks slings), safely run into all of Beast Clergyman's attacks when re-engaging him as well as most mid-range incantations. Charged R2s are possible on the Ground drag sweep and after each riposte, before he stands up again. For phase 2, always roll into his combos which will lend you plenty of time for multiple R1s or a charged R2, keep running into him for most combos and learn the projectiles dodge timings and you will be golden for this fight. In base NG the sheer poise damage you can dish out will bully him with staggers, which will be harder as you reach higher NG cycles of course but still a great advantage given his low poise values.
List of safe punishes with colossal swords per attacks in each phase :
Phase 1, Beast Clergyman :
When re-engaging Beast Clergyman, a running R1 is always safe, followed by a roll if need to.
For most of his melee combos, it's advised to wait for the final hit (usually a rocks sling throw) which can be punished by a rolling r1. You can also roll away and bait a mid-range projectile instead.
Mid-range projectile throws (rock slings, stone of Gurranq) : Run into him and running R1, if you're too far to run under the rock slings simply roll it and do a rolling r1. This doesn't apply to the disengage versions where Beast Clergyman throws rocks slings while running away, you can't punish those.
Standing slam into beast claws : Roll/walk to the left, and either [rolling r1, roll claws, rolling r1] or simply wait to jump over the claw for a jumping R2.
Ground drag sweep : Go behind him and charged R2.
Ground rupture with rocks : R1 or R2, then run away to clear the rocks and re-engage
Whenever he staggers : R1 him before riposting if you have time, then after riposting immediately perform a fully charged R2 to have a good headstart on the next stagger meter.
Phase 2, Maliketh the Black Blade :
DO NOT roll away from Maliketh's melee combos under any circumstance in that phase. Most of his melee combos let you get a charged R2 inbetween the attacks, but doing 2x R1s is just as good and you don't have to commit as much, allowing you to cancel the 2nd one if you misjudged timings.
Opener combo : Charged R2 then R1, if he does the Destined Death combo run away and clear it.
Running swipe combo : Run into the swipe to strafe it, then 2x R1 or CR2.
Double spin attack : Roll to his side (two rolls is recommended for safety) then do a rolling R1 or R2. If you were close enough to manage dodging it with only one roll, you can do a charged R2 but the timing is tight.
Turn-around quick slam combo : Charged R2, roll the follow-up delayed swipe, rolling r1.
Jump explosion : Run away from him to bait the Aerial spin attack, then run back in to make him land past you and charged R2.
Projectiles into ground crash/jump on pillar into ground crash : Roll under him, then roll again to dodge the follow-up AoE explosion and do a rolling r1. It's also possible to do a jumping R2 if you feel like his stance is about to break, but it's slightly risky.

Talismans : Red feathered branchsword, Strarscourge Heirloom, Green Turtle talisman, Viridian amber medaillon +2

A solo, melee only Rune Level 1 (RL1) fight against Beast Clergyman / Maliketh, the Black Blade on NG+7 (maximum New Game cycle) with no upgrades, no auxiliary effects (bleed, frost, poison, scarlet rot etc), no buffs (Great runes, weapon/body or physics flask buffs), no AoWs, no talismans and no hits taken. This time done without the Blasphemous Claw parries in phase 2.
This is it. My best Maliketh fight, and one if not the hardest showcase of mastery done on him yet. I decided to redo my previous one without Blasphemous Claw parries which shortened phase 2 too much to my taste due to the flat damage inflicted by the parries themselves. However thanks to the making and use of new and more aggressive strats (thanks to Brian, Parallax and Clelia for helping with coming up/refining these strats) in both phase 1 and 2, that kill ended up being barely longer than the original one with a 16:30 mins length whereas the estimation tended to be around 20-25 minutes with these restrictions before - a significant improvement, and an amazing fight.

This was stressfully hard to do, some of his attacks in p1 (namely the beast slings and backhop swipe) were nigh instant with the speed modifier and ended most of the attempts. Very fun to do, however ! Will I do it again ? Probably not as I still value my sanity, even if slightly.

In this context, "All Remembrances/Required bosses" refer to all bosses giving a Remembrance and/or being required to reach a Remembrance boss (like Margit, Godskin Duo or Gideon Ofnir). No exceptions. After figuring out how much of a garbage gank fight Valiant Gargoyles were with no synergy whatsoever, I went instead with the Leyndell sewers route and fought fake Mohg in order to reach Deeproot depths and fight Lichdragon Fortissax. Enjoy !

A solo, melee only speedkill at Rune Level 1 (RL1) in NG+7 (Max New Game cycle) of DragonLord Placidusax, slumbering master of Farum Azula, without weapon upgrades, status effects like bleed, frost, scarlet rot, etc. Also done without weapon buffs or Ashes of War and with no hits taken.
This is a satisfying kill compared to the base NG version I did a couple months ago, charged R2s of the cleanrot knight sword doing a ton of damage compared to its stamina consumption. The base NG +0 kill was 12 minutes, and I was estimating this one to be 16-17 minutes but got particularly unlucky with phase 3 RNG where Dragonlord decided to stall with thundercloud dives and lasers a lot.
Phase 1 went smoothly with the semi-scripted opener loop to get 11 charged R2s on him and a stagger right off the start, by baiting specific attacks with positioning (go down to his tail during lightning call, tail swipe and to his front for scripted lightning swipe followup into fire breath). Phase 2 was also cleaner compared to my base NG kill where I was playing defensive against the teleports due to the hard to react quick slam AoE, this time being more aggressive and punishing every teleport attack. Phase 3 is where it slowed down with the previously mentioned dives spam. In hindsight I should've done the baiting strat to walls on lasers to get much more damage in, but the tradeoff was harder to dodge thundercloud dives (and not being able to punish them) with potential memes of Dragonlord getting stuck on the walls during the sliding part after dive, which costed me a few lost attempts under 10% health left. So I decided to play the phase 3 safer, and besides enjoying the lightshow more. This boss is incredibely cinematic, for sure.

A solo, melee only kill at Rune Level 1 (RL1) on NG+7 (Max New Game Cycle) of Malenia, Blade of Miquella / Goddess of Rot, without status effects, parrying, Bloodhound's step and not taking hits.
A satisfying fight, huge thanks to my friend @BigDBrian for explaining to me how the point blank circling dodge of her Waterfowl Dance worked. Glad to get a kill with one of these in p1, although she didn't do any flurry in phase 2 which is a shame given I often had 2-3 flurries attempts lost to random p2 stuff before. But otherwise, it's a nice kill with some sneaky interrupts at times.

#EldenRing #Malenia
A compilation of speedkills of all main Elden Ring bosses done at Rune Level 1 (RL1) in NG+7 (Max New Game cycle) and without taking hits. The goal is to down every boss as fast as possible solo, without glitches/extreme cheese/AI breaks etc and melee only (with the strict exception of freezing pots on Malenia to interrupt her Scarlet Aeonia incantation). Loading times during cutscenes aren't counted since they are hardware dependent and would not be fair to everyone as a friend of mine pointed out.
In this context, "All main bosses" refer to all bosses giving a Remembrance, achievements and/or being required to progress into the main storyline (like Gideon Ofnir). The only exception being repeat bosses that are weaker version of later bosses since they are thereby pointless to include (for example Godskin Noble and Ancestor Spirit are excluded since I already fight Godskin Duo and Regal Ancestor Spirit later on in the video). Enjoy !
