Said The Whale - Record Shop [Official Video] Said The Whale 2019-06-20 | The video you are watching was created with 129 spinning vinyl records shot in sequence. There were NO visual FX or digital animations used in the making of this video. The idea for this video was based on the first widespread animation device called a Phenakistiscope introduced in 1833 (similar to the more widely-known Zoetrope). The device was a disk with a series of pictures showing sequential phases of an animation. As the disk spins, the user would look through evenly spaced slits on another connected disk to see the pictures animate before their eyes. This similar effect can be achieved by looking at the spinning disk through a camera with the proper frame rate and shutter speed. The idea was to use this effect to create an entire music video on a 45rpm record player using a series of spinning vintage records. Through a lot of trial and error and countless hours of experimentation, we developed a system to create a connected sequence of animated records that would actually sync up with the music. Once we figured out that process, we then had to produce 129 12-inch stickers, each with their own stroke information that would allow a machine to cut out the edges around the subjects on the stickers so we could see the unique vinyl texture on each vintage record. From there, we spent hours peeling off and discarding the extra sticker material cut by the machine. We then filmed each record at multiple angles spinning for approximately 1.3 seconds and then combined them all to create the final video you see today. Directed by Johnny Jansen. Pre-order now at saidthewhale.com About the song: In 2007 at the very beginning our our careers, we were asked to open up for our (at the time) new friend Dan Mangan at a venue called Chapel Arts in Vancouver. It was the beginning of a long friendship with Dan. The staple of his set at that time was a song called So Much For Everyone. He would get the room singing a simple “ohh ohh” part, while he built the song into an emotional crescendo which peaked with the line “I will drop my gun”. His performance at that show was a life-affirming example of how powerful music can be and how important it is. That song still brings me to tears. ‘Old Soul, Young Heart’ is a song that I wrote as a thank you to Dan for making art that moves me. After writing the first verse of the song, it sat on the shelf for many years. I had visions of writing a new verse for every person in my life that had ever inspired me, but ironically the words never came. In the end, I decided to complete the song with a verse about my dad, who aside from my mom, has probably been the biggest influence on my writing. In hindsight, “A Tale of Two Dads” would have been a great title for this song. So a phone call was arranged to discuss the possibility of working together. I dialed him up and we started chatting. As we spoke, it became immediately apparent that Kevin was in the bath, which was both disarming and strangely relaxing. The gentle lapping of bath water was somehow putting me at ease as I talked to one of my musical idols. At some point during the conversation he said to me “man, just do what you do best: write a pop song!”And so, listen: when Kevin Drew tells you to write a pop song, you sit the fuck down and you write a pop song. So that’s what I did. We didn't end up working together on the record, but our conversation sparked this song and that's good enough for me!I would like to clarify that UnAmerican is not specifically about Kevin Drew, rather, I just liked how it sounded when I hung up the phone and said aloud to myself “Hmmm. The cover of the album proudly displayed the A&C logo, and as a result Arts & Crafts became my hub for musical discovery - Stars, The Dears, Apostle of Hustle, Most Serene Republic... Every time I bought a record from Arts & Crafts, it felt like all I had to do was read the liner notes and I could discover my next favourite band. It instilled in me a sense of family among musicians, which is something Said The Whale has always strived for in our career and the way we carry ourselves. To now be a part of that family feels really special, and we’re excited and honoured to work with everyone at the label. And we cannot wait to start rolling out this album!

Said The Whale // HEAVEN [official video] Said The Whale 2018-03-08 | We started off at a kinda sketchy mirror-cutting warehouse in Phoenix, AZ. (Did you know that mirror-cutting warehouses exist?? ME NEITHER). We picked up 7 giant mirrors which had been cut to our specifications, loaded up the van and headed west into the desert. When we were about 5 minutes away from the Hoover Dam, our van broke down. We had to wait 4 hours for a tow truck to come and replace our rental van. While we were waiting, we conveniently found some cool canyons near where we broke down, so we hiked a few miles carrying these giant mirrors (not recommended) and filmed some of the video there. One of them shattered within the first hour of shooting, which sucked because cleaning up shards of glass in the desert is hard, but also kiiiiind of a relief because it meant we only had to hike back out with one mirror. So anyways, we were down to 6 mirrors now, we got the replacement van, and decided to spend the night in Vegas because we were tired and hungry and we felt like we deserved some decadence in the form of an all-you-can-eat buffet. Vegas is super weird. The buffet was sub-par. We woke up the next morning and drove out to Death Valley, which is where we shot most of the video. It's a really beautiful and diverse place. Every time we saw something cool at the side of the road, we pulled over, hiked the goddamn mirrors into the desert in the 35+ degree heat, got some shots, applied sunscreen, used many bottles of windex to keep the mirrors clean, and did our best to stay hydrated. After 3 days of intense shooting, we drove back to Phoenix, celebrated at an In-N-Out burger, and flew home. We actually shot this video in March 2017, but held off releasing it for a whole year because we wanted the video release to coincide with some cool news. Well, here we are a year later, and the cool news is coming NEXT WEEK. So stay tuned for that. Now that I think about it, this song is a little bit like a re-hash of ‘Mo Money Mo Problems’ but targeted at insecure, privileged millennials. *shrug emoji*
