"I treat clay as if it were fabric used in a quilt. Each piece begins as soft slabs of contrasting colored clays which are torn apart and textured. My texture tools range from clay stamps which I create to imported Indian wood cuts to everyday objects like bits of wood, buttons, screwdrivers, a meat tenderizer, and more. The textured pieces are assembled back into a single sheet of clay like a puzzle. This sheet is then used to create a geometric shape with the help of a tar paper temlate. Soft Slab Construction with Scott Jennings Orchard Valley Ceramic Arts Guild 2018-07-18 | Scott demonstrates how he makes his soft slab functional tableware. Scott Jennings uses thin slabs of white stoneware and paper templates to create his unique hand built tableware. Patterns are added to the slab while flat then the form is assembled and stretched to create volume completely by hand. He leaves clues as to how each piece was constructed in the form of exposed seams or thumbprints. Transparent, brightly colored or matte white glazes are used to finish the work, accentuating the details in the form and adding a vibrant quality to each piece. Scott studied ceramics at California State University Fullerton, earning a B.F.A. in ceramics in 1996. He has worked as a ceramics lab technician and Instructor at The Irvine Fine Arts Center and Mt. San Antonio College. He currently teaches at Ruby’s Clay Studio, Palo Alto Art Center, Higher Fire Studios, and at Clay By The Bay. Surface Design and Treatment with Ben Carter Orchard Valley Ceramic Arts Guild 2018-06-01 | Ben demonstrates various techniques and strategies for surface design used on his pots including slip trailing, paper resist and texturing. Ben Carter is a studio potter, workshop leader, and social media enthusiast based in Santa Cruz, CA. He received his BFA in ceramics/painting from Appalachian State University, and his MFA in ceramics from the University of Florida. His professional experience includes being an artist-in-residence at the Odyssey Center for Ceramic Art in Asheville, NC, as well as Anderson Ranch Arts Center in Snowmass, CO, the Archie Bray Foundation in Helena, MT, and the Ceramic Research Center Guldagergaard in Skelskor, Denmark. From 2010-2012 he served as the Education Director of the Pottery Workshop in Shanghai, China. He has lectured and presented workshops at universities and craft centers in the United States, Canada, China, Australia, and New Zealand. He has exhibited internationally in numerous invitational and juried shows. Carter was recently named the 2016 Ceramic Artist of the Year for Ceramics Monthly and Pottery Making Illustrated.

Wood Firing 101 Orchard Valley Ceramic Arts Guild 2013-11-04 | Information session for those interested in participating in a Wood Fire Workshop a TBD weekend in January or February 2014.The introduction meeting includes a history of wood fire in US and California, and particularly the Spring Valley Anagama and Nobori kilns; types of local clay that have had great results in the Spring Valley Wood Fires; safety gear; glazes; the process. Attendees will be invited to a Thanksgiving weekend firing of the Anagama Kilns to see first hand the process. And, then those that are interested in making the commitment of time and resources will be able to participate in the mid winter OVCAG Wood Fire Workshop.
