Many necros have problems in:
-selecting traits
-choosing utility skills
-picking weapons
It is my hope that this mini encyclopedia can help my fellow necros. It breaks down each necromancer traits and skills into objective discussions. I focus on the purposes that each trait or skill serve, and how they can work in specific builds and situations.
This encyclopedia will not instantly make the viewer into an elite necromancer player. There is a lot of practice and experience involved. However after watching this, a player should be much more comfortable and confident with the build that they take into battle. They should know what they want, and know what traits, weapons and skills to take to help that achieve their objective.
In the future I might further expand this encyclopedia to talk about specific topics and discuss updates. So feel free to comment and feedback. :D

Here is my mini encyclopedia on necromancers for Guild Wars 2. It covers all the traits and skills available, last updated as of Mar. 27, 2013. The total run time is around 2 hours and has been divided into 13 parts.

It gives 250 exp every 40 seconds. That is 22500 exp an hour without scrolls. Not too bad for a risk free farm. Even if you disconnect the heroes can take care of the mobs for you. You have almost zero chance of dying and this method works regardless of the class type of your character.
http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Level
e.g.
Inferno
170X3.364=571.88 damage
http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Inferno
Lightning Hammer
130X3.364X1.297 (armor penetration)=567.20 damage

Shatter Hex and Defile Defenses
150X3.364=504.6 damage

http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Defile_Defenses
Decapitate
28+65=93
93X3.364X1.414=442.38dmg (always critical, -20 armor)
http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Decapitate
http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Critical_hit
Final Thrust
Minimal damage: 15+53=68
68*3.364=228.75
228.75*2=457.5 (if below 50% health)
Maximum damage:22+53=75
75*3.364=252.3
252.3*1.414=356.75 (If critical)
356.75*2=713.5 (if critical and below 50% health)
http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Final_Thrust
Conclusion, armor is better than HP in HM. When you face Shatter Hex or Defile Defenses don't use hexes and don't block.
This skill offers very high damage at the cost of all the player's adrenaline and energy. To go around this disadvantage the player need to use skills that costs minimal of neither.
Pros:
-Very high damage.
-Many skills can still be used: Signets, maintained enchantments, etc
-Works great with "For Great Justice!", charging this skill with just 4 hits.
-When used with signets, can use Symbolic Strike exactly twice until Decapitate charges up.
-Great synergy with Purge Signet, which also uses up all the energy.
Cons:
-Uses up all the player's adrenaline and energy.
-The build lack utilities like cripple, breeding or speed boost.
-DPS without Strength of Honor is pretty lackluster, although the damage on the attack itself is still pretty high.
Verdict: A. Very powerful skill with the right build
-One of the highest damage build I have used.
AoE Degen is not popular in PvE. People prefer direct damage or stronger single target degen. I went out to see if it is that bad. I used 3 skills: Suffering, Barb Signet and Oppressive Gaze, all 3 are AoE degen skills. So ideally multiple mobs will suffer from Suffering, Breeding, Poisoned and Weakness at the same time. Worked much better than I expected.
Pros:
-10 arrows of degen actually hurts a lot, even against level 30 mobs.
-Ignores armor.
-Unlike normal AoE DoT nukes, mobs cannot "run away" from the damage. Once affected, the hex and condition need to be removed.
-Multiple hexes and conditions on multiple foes are hard to remove, and mobs rarely have these removals.
-Weakness spread among a few mobs greatly cut down their damage.
-The skills I picked recharges very fast.
-Synergy as cover hexes and conditions for allies.
-Doesn't take an elite slot.
Cons:
-Searing Flames are in some ways better.
-Some mobs are immune to conditions, making conditions unreliable as a degen in some areas.
-Hexes are more reliable, but AoE degen hexes are rare; Only Suffering, Lingering Curse and Ulcerous Lungs (conditional).
-High energy cost. Need intense energy management like duel Offering of Blood to use on a consistent basis.
-Cannot go pass 10 levels of degen. So lack synergy when there is more then one degen guy in a team. Direct damage can stack just fine.
Verdict: B, Very powerful in PvE. However given B instead of A due to the inability to stack with other degen skills. Max degen is 10 arrows.
-Hurts a lot, specially when affecting multiple mobs.
When I think of Iron Mist I think of Spirit Rift. These 2 skills should work well together. After some testing they indeed do since the enemy have a much harder time running away. But the enemy can still escape if they want to.
Pros:
-Great snare at 90%
-Last pretty long
-Does not require any "condition" for the snare. (e.g. on fire)
-Great against hard hitting melee mobs in HM.
-Great against hard hitting melee guys in PvP, when you want to focus on the enemy mages first.
-Works best if you treat this as a "snare and ignore" skill. That means don't bother trying to kill the guy with Iron Mist until the end.
Cons:
-Works horrible in "snare and kill" situations, without the right team setup.
-Enemy become immune to all damage except lightning and life stealing. This is huge.
-The team might hit some enemy for zero damage and get all confused.
-The enemy can still escape Spirit Rift with only 10% movement speed.
-Not maintainable, with a skill recharge of 30 seconds.
-Earth magic is not a popular choice.
-Only snare against ONE target.
-Other snares available where you can still deal full damage against the target.
Verdict: C. Best skill in the game for JUST the purpose of snaring. To sum it up, great for "snare and ignore", horrible for "snare and kill". Given grade C b/c it does its job but has lots of draw backs.
-Need the whole team, not just you, to build around this skill for it to work great.
-At the very least, team members need to be informed that you are bringing this skill. This will avoid confusion. However for PuGs this probably means instant kick.
-Will work pretty well with the right team setup (e.g. everyone is using lightning damage).
-Useful in PvP. However like all snaring skills will have minimum use in PvE.
-Don't remember the last time I seen an elementalist with earth magic in PvE.
Pros:
-HUGH AoE effect area. Very easy to hit multiple mobs with it.
-Only cost 1 energy.
-Works well with the 3 necro heroes to form a 4 men RG nuke team; Allowing everyone to use 3 RGs at once.
Cons:
-Very long skill recharge at 10 seconds.
-Very weak single hit damage. Must have at least 16 in blood magic to deal any decent damage.
-Searing Flames has better dps and burning.
-Lack of any secondary effect or hex.
-When used with Arcane Echo and Mimicry its very easy to interrupt. Both cast in 2 seconds.
Verdict:
-Grade: C. I no longer see this as the worst elite in the game. However it is still pretty bad.
-Weak single hit damage AND long skill recharge doesn't go well together.
-That said, the energy cost is almost free.
-Pretty decent with skill recharge or skill duplication skills
-Without the above (or when they fail) RG is VERY WEAK by itself.
-"Wasting" skill slots to improve the skill recharge of RG.
