A disciple is one who has entered into friendship with the Lord Jesus Christ, and whose life has been radically transformed by that friendship.
Pope John Paul II described the Church as 'a communion of disciples in mission," using the phrase "new evangelization" as a way to explain this mission. Jesus said to His disciples, "Put out into the deep.' His words are a summons to the Church to rediscover the missionary imperative at the heart of the Christian faith. The day of our Baptism is the day that we were commissioned as missionaries.Bishop Daniel Flores at the 2013 Rediscover: Catholic CelebrationRediscover Faith2013-11-14 | At the 2013 Rediscover: Catholic Celebration on October 12, 2013, Bishop Daniel Flores discussed how the Church must be an "engine of evangelization." We must ask ourselves the questions, "What kind of parish am I in? How can I be an agent for the kind of energy that the Church and the Spirit are calling for? How do we teach others how to pray?" The Church is a parish of believers who find joy in serving others. The challenge of our time is to create a civilization of love. Bishop Flores describes love as encompassing three things: sacrifice, thinking of others first and bringing joy. We have been called, taught, fed, and sent by Jesus. If we are to be a model of Jesus, we must invite others into the embrace of the Church. Love is what wins in the end. Faith in Christ, crucified and risen, is the only thing that sustains a people in the hope that we have in the beauty and goodness of life.Michele Denise Michaels performs at the 2013 Rediscover: Catholic CelebrationRediscover Faith2013-11-08 | Singer Michele Denise Michaels performs the hymn "How Great Thou Art" at the 2013 Rediscover: Catholic Celebration, October 12, 2013.Eliot Morris performs at the 2013 Rediscover: Catholic CelebrationRediscover Faith2013-11-07 | Singer/songwriter Eliot Morris performs his original song, "Rediscover," as well as the hymn "Hosea" at the 2013 Rediscover: Catholic Celebration, October 12, 2013.Father Robert Barron at the 2013 Rediscover: Catholic CelebrationRediscover Faith2013-10-30 | Father Robert Barron shares seven points about how to put the New Evangelization into practice at the 2013 Rediscover: Catholic Celebration on October 12, 2013.
As Catholics we must evangelize by leading with the beautiful, avoid dumbing down the Gospel, preach with ardor, tell the great story, emphasize the Augustinian anthropology, stress St. Irenaeus' doctrine of God, and spend time with the old media before using the new media. St. Augustine shows that only God can answer the deepest longings of our hearts in his words, "You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in you." St. Irenaeus said that "The glory of God is a human being fully alive." True humanism is Christianity and we must preach with passion, the joy we have in our knowledge of the Risen Lord.Bishop Andrew Cozzens at the 2013 Rediscover: Catholic CelebrationRediscover Faith2013-10-30 | Bishop Andrew CozzensRedescubre:Rediscover Faith2013-09-12 | Cesar Cruz performs his song, Redescubre:Rediscover—YongRediscover Faith2013-08-19 | Growing up in Korea, Yong was often alone.
