On #ThisDayInHistory in 1964, a guidance computer designed and manufactured by IBM was used aboard NASA’s Saturn SA-6 rocket test flight, placing a record-breaking 19-ton payload into orbit around the Earth.
The Launch Vehicle Digital Computer (LVDC) was an integral part of the Instrument Unit (IU) section of the Saturn, helping ensure test missions went as expected. Information about the mission’s performance was telemetered in real-time back to Earth, from the IU.
Just over five years later (1969), NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration used the Saturn system to send the first humans to the surface of the Moon.🚀
