When she was born, her mother refused to take her home from the hospital - meaning Deborah was placed in an orphanage for the first four and a half years of her life, until she was finally adopted by an American family. After bringing her home to Washington, Deborah's adoptive family set to work on helping her find ways to be independent: "I had help getting dressed until I learned to do it myself, my sister helped me do my hair." Deborah soon developed her own technique - using her feet as hands, which has allowed her to be fiercely independent ever since: "I use my feet to open doors, reach a mug out of the cupboard, straighten my hair." But it wasn't all smooth sailing for Deborah growing up - she would often "get the comments, get the stares" from other children at school - something she still experiences to this day: "It's constant - sometimes a kid will be like, 'Ew, what's wrong with your arms?'" And Deborah was in and out of hospital as a child too, for surgeries to shave down the bones in her arms as they regularly grew out of her skin - all whilst struggling to come to terms with her birth mother's decision not to raise her: "There's times I really struggled with [the fact that] she just left me there." However, with the support of her adoptive family, Deborah grew in confidence and now has a family of her own - a loving husband, Nathan, and their son, Matthew. In 2021, Matthew introduced his mum to TikTok and Deborah began posting videos showing how she does everyday things, as simple as folding clothes or cooking a meal. Soon, the comments were flooding in - including some that were "weird" - "hundreds of comments like 'You look like a dinosaur' or 'I thought T-Rex's were extinct?'" Deborah decided it was time to hit back, posting a video wearing T-Rex arms on the end of her fingers - a video that very quickly went viral and enabled Deborah to find her voice when addressing common misconceptions: "People say what they want to say and it's up to you how you want to respond... I try to have a positive, funny outlook." Four years ago, Celia's digestive system shut down and she has been unable to eat or drink since, so the Hickman line delivers all her food, drink and medicine directly into her bloodstream. Running the feed for 14 hours from evening to morning every day, she has the remaining 10 hours "unplugged" to go about her life. Celia was born with an ultra rare condition called Loeys-Dietz syndrome (LDS) - a genetic disorder that affects the connective tissue throughout her body. Celia described to truly how it affects her day-to-day: "It causes a lot of chronic pain, it makes me incredibly tired and also I'm incredibly susceptible to various different illnesses. Many of my organs have now either not formed properly or started shutting down." Because of the wide-ranging effects LDS has on the body, the average life expectancy for someone with the condition is 36 years - so Celia and her family have to live in the knowledge that "it could happen tomorrow, it could happen in five or six years, but it will happen out of the blue." This is not lost on Celia's dad, who also has LDS and from whom Celia inherited the condition: "I am the gift that keeps on giving, that's the problem." And while the support of her parents and her husband, James, crucially enable Celia to live her best life, only one in every 70 million people have the condition and very little is still known about it. Celia has dedicated her working life to advocacy for and on behalf of disabled people - campaigning and lobbying to ensure their rights are not forgotten - and hopes to bring more attention to super-rare conditions like LDS: "One of the reasons that they're rare is because people don't know about them. If you do meet somebody that has a rare condition... Ask questions, be insightful, be respectful and be kind." And Celia's parents could not be more proud of what she has achieved up to now: "She's amazing, she gets up every day and she gets on with it. Michael, 66, had just come out of a 17-year relationship when he was matched with Aaron. They met in the summer of 2017 when Aaron was 23 and Michael was 61 and had a whirlwind romance, although they didn’t want to admit how much they liked each other. Aaron explained: "We blog geared towards age gap relationships, so obviously, you get some, negative feedback referring to, 'daddy issues'". Other comments claim he is a "gold digger" and that "daddy pays [the] bills". Aaron admitted that it can be "a little annoying sometimes, I'm authentically into older men." Adding: "The only thing that bothers me is that I work really hard. I'm lucky to be in a good job and I'm lucky to be able to make good money. But the thing is, I realise that I could be able to say earning a million salary a year, people will still comment gold digger." I Found Out I Was Intersex At 17 | BORN DIFFERENT truly 2023-10-29 | SUBSCRIBE to Truly: http://bit.ly/Oc61HjFOR the first 17 years of Sydney's life, she was "raised as a girl" - but during puberty Sydney started to experience symptoms that she now knows were signs that she was actually born intersex. At 15 years old, Sydney went to see the doctor, as she was struggling with "severe cystic acne". Test results showed "heightened levels of androgens, or what are sometimes called male hormones" and Sydney's doctor prescribed hormone treatment "to make [her] 'normal'." The treatment did work on her acne but, just two years later, Sydney was back at the doctors again after discovering that she had no vaginal opening. She remembers how the gynaecologists "didn't really believe [her]" until they looked for themselves - at which point they agreed, with Sydney, to operate and create a vagina for her. While Sydney was happy with the outcome of the surgery, she does "wish that the word 'intersex' had been uttered" - it was only in her "early twenties", as Sydney immersed herself in her local queer community, that she learned her true identity. Since then, Sydney has taken to TikTok and created "a new community for [herself]" where she educates others and raises awareness of what it means to be intersex. Trolls have accused Sydney of being "a liar" - the kind of ignorance that causes her mom, Dana, to "worry about [Sydney's] safety". But in the face of everything, Sydney is defiant: "The best way that I can battle the difficulties that I face is to continue to educate others... Living With 70% Burns After I Survived A House Fire | BORN DIFFERENT truly 2023-10-20 | SUBSCRIBE to Truly: http://bit.ly/Oc61HjSERGIO does not remember life without the burns that cover roughly 70% of his body. When he was just two years old, he and his younger brother, Daniel, ran out to the garage and pulled a gallon of gasoline off the top shelf. Sergio explained to Truly what happened next: "The gasoline ran all the way to the water heater and that ignited the fire." The two boys were soon engulfed in flames and when their parents "heard the screaming", they ran out of the house to face the horrifying scene. The boys' mum quickly grabbed Daniel while their dad, Marcelo, had to reach deeper into the fire to pull Sergio to safety. Sergio is under no illusions as to how much danger he was in: "I do believe my dad saved my life." However, serious damage had already been done - Sergio was immediately taken to hospital, where he "fell into a coma from the shock". On arrival at the hospital, his parents were warned to "be ready in case I were to pass away" and Marcelo was "fighting with the doctors to do something but they couldn't do anything." Sergio eventually stabilised and, after months in hospital and numerous skin grafts, he was finally able to return home. He was, however, left blind in one eye and his childhood would be spent "in and out of hospital". As Sergio grew the scars did not stretch with his skin, so surgeries and skin grafts have been a regular feature of his life - he now estimates that he has had "over 150/160 surgeries" in total. It is likely that Sergio will "never" stop, as he explained to his dad that "every time I go to the hospital and get a new surgery, I just see it as me improving my health a little bit more". Sergio has built up a huge following on TikTok, where he seeks to "educate people on different aspects of being a burns survivor and to make people laugh as well". His public platform does attract trolls but he is defiant in his response to their comments: "It doesn't bother me... I don't even remove them because then that means I'm paying attention". And, as Marcelo attests to, Sergio's determination not to let anything get him down has had a lasting impact on those around him: "I'm proud of him... On a ski trip with his school, he had a "minor fall" which triggered his first ever "tic attack" out of the blue. Josh told Truly: "I started convulsing, involuntary movements, I couldn't control my arms or legs... I felt scared, I felt angry at myself, I felt guilty, I felt confused." And Josh remembers how his family at the time were "just completely gobsmacked with what was actually going on... I also had family and friends asking, 'Can you not just stop?'" But it soon became clear that he couldn't and within 6 months, Josh had been formally diagnosed with Tourette's syndrome. Josh's early tics were more physical, so his future career prospects were unclear - but when he "made a big decision" to leave the family business and set himself up as a barber, Josh had no idea that would lead him to where he is today. 3 years ago, Josh set up his own barber shop and began building a loyal, local client base - then, about a year ago, his fiancée, Lucy, suggested that he record his haircuts and post them to his TikTok. Josh has now gained a huge following on social media, where he posts clips of his tics whilst cutting hair and answers questions from followers about his condition. His content receives a huge amount of love and support but has also attracted negativity: "people have accused me of faking it." But the one thing that Josh says "really gets me going" is seeing that his videos are reaching other young people coming to terms with Tourette's syndrome. Ashley says "I feel really unique when I know that there's less than 100 people that have my condition... and I kind of like that". Ashley’s forearms are significantly shorter and she was born without a jaw or thumbs - so when she was younger, doctors repurposed parts of her skull to create a jaw and rotated her index fingers to create thumbs. Ashley has had 35 surgeries and spent long periods of her childhood in hospital. Growing up, she was bullied at school - "They would call me names like 'T-Rex', 'alien'... I was crying every night" - and dating was always difficult for her. She remembers "a lot of times where people didn't really give me the chance". Ashley met her partner, Matt, online 14 years ago and remembers how he "didn't really treat me like I was different" before officially becoming a couple when they finally met in person in 2019. However, when Ashley and Matt are out in public, they regularly receive stares - something Matt cannot stand: "It gets me really frustrated... I don't like it at all". Knowing that Matt has her back has given Ashley a newfound confidence though: "All I feel is amazing to know that I have a significant other who supports me... we are like partners in crime". And recently, that confidence has skyrocketed further - when Ashley found a local dance teacher whilst scrolling on TikTok: "I saw Rick, I just loved everything about him - his environment, his attitude". Still, she remembers feeling "very nervous putting myself out there. I didn't know how people were going to react to me physically". Falling in love, they dated for a year before moving in together and eventually getting married in 2021. Yesi was born with diastrophic dysplasia, which is a very rare type of dwarfism. She told Truly: "Only one in one million people can get it. The main issues are my arms and legs are shorter, and our cartilage and all the joints get degenerate faster." Continuing, she said: "People used to always tell me 'Oh you should only date a little person', At one point even my mom thought that she would rather have me date a little person because she thought an average-sized person would discriminate and treat me badly. And in fact, I’ve never in my life, dated a little person." For Bryan, her height was never an issue: "I thought she was very pretty when I first saw her photo. I knew she was a little person because it was a full-body photo. We decided to meet up for dinner one night, she was very well-spoken and we got along really well," he explained. While Kanisha survived the accident, she sustained burns to 60% of her body. Speaking to Truly, she explained: "I also was burned down to the third layer of my skull, so I am able to grow my hair back. I lost an ear lobe and they had to take fingers from both hands as they were so badly burned." For Kanisha, her life-changing injuries meant that she was subjected to cruel taunts in the playground. "Kids were mean, they were bullies. They would pull my wigs off. I was never called by my first name. I was called 'the burned girl' or 'the girl with the lizard skin'", she explained. The negative comments knocked Kanisha's confidence and she admitted, "They made me feel like the world was a very cruel place. Because no matter how happy or how much I tried to boost myself up, when I went out into the world, people were still staring." However, when Kanisha became a mum, her kids totally changed her perspective on her appearance. She explained: "When your own children are born, they don't notice your scars. They know mum just how she was. So I stopped paying attention to my scars after that."
