Sand Plotter Test #2 Nick Johnson 2012-04-25 | Test number two of the sand plotter, which now features smoother motion, limit switches, and an insatiable thirst for human blood. Well, two of those, anyway.The jerkiness was eliminated by putting a very thin layer of foam under the sand. This also cut down on the noise substantially.With the limit switches, I no longer need to reset the table manually each time I start it, since it can find a stable zero position on its own.
Sand Plotter Test Nick Johnson 2012-04-21 | First test run of my sand plotter prototype. Apologies for the poor focus in parts - I'm just coming to terms with my camera's unsuitability for video work.The eventual goal is to build a coffee table with a sand plotter under glass; this is a prototype to test out the method. I'm reasonably happy with it, apart from how unsteadily the bearing moves; I'm not sure how to improve on that, as nothing I've tried so far has made much of a difference. Suggestions are welcome.The plotter is controlled over bluetooth; power is supplied via a slip ring in the middle of the rotating disc. Pretty much the entire thing is built from laser cut parts (those that aren't off-the-shelf) with the exception of the gears on each stepper, which are 3D printed.
Prospect Canal Ride Nick Johnson 2012-04-12 | The prospect reservoir canal used to carry water from prospect reservoir to the pipehead southwest of it. It was eventually replaced by underground pipes, and the land was repurposed as a recreational reserve.The canal was filled with rubble to just below the lip, and grassed over, with a paved cycle path down the middle. Because the canal is bordered on both sides by reserved land, this makes for a fantastic ride - though you're in the middle of western sydney, for much of the ride there's neither houses nor cars within sight or hearing.You can see the lip of the original canal to the left and right of the path in the video, and the path regularly dips down to the level of the original canal to go under bridges. At 9:05, the path passes through the canal's aqueduct, now converted into a bridge.
