When Partying Becomes Political - Summer Solstice at Stonehenge Feed the Machine 2023-08-29 | Stonehenge, England's most famous prehistoric monument, is open to the public on the nights of the summer and winter solstice. It’s the only time you can go right up to and touch the stones.At the start of summer, this draws thousands of people to celebrate the sunrise on the longest day of the year.But before the year 2000, there was a period of 15 years where access was denied to the public. This was part of a violent crackdown of the free-party movement, which throughout the 70's and 80's grew to a size that became a threat to the establishment.
