It's when you'rehappy and in the flow that they can come out in all their beauty.We played 3 tunes on this impromptu session in front of the cameraand I was playing Leo Eimers' new archtop guitar which he had broughtfor me to test drive. Kevin plays on his Eimers D hole guitar.We chose Paquito for our last tune (all 1 takes) and by then we were relaxedand happy.Paquito is a wicked tune to play and is one of the tunes which is has really caught on in the Gypsy Jazz scene recently. Howard is a guitarist I respect tremendously and someonewe can all learn a lot from. His knowledge of Jazz is vast. I wanted to findout about his way of playing and his take on Gypsy Jazz.We jammed on 'Djangology' and he gave some great tips on improvising as wellas a cool tip on chord voicings to get the Freddy Green rhythm guitar sound.I asked him if each of his fingers in fact had independent brains but he referred toan old teacher who was recommended to him from Barney Kessel, who had got him intothat finger ballet. Number 1 - Robin Nolan Trio - Gypsy Blue Launch Party gypsyjams 2013-09-29 | http://www.GypsyJazzSecrets.com"Number 1" is an old favorite in the Robin Nolan Trio repertoire and it's actually the first tune I wrote in the Gypsy Jazz genre back in 1996. It always seems to go down well with the audience and Thursday night was no exception! I could here a few "Yesssss's" in the room when we played the opening riff. The chord sequence is classic and the melody simple, and with the driving Latin rhythm of my brother Kevin, the tune rocks nicely. I opted for the extended ending in this version and enjoyed playing over the turnaround until arriving at 'Somewhere Over The Rainbow' to bring it to a close. It was a wonderful night at Zeppos and it was a buzz knowing there were many around the world tuning in online. It was a life changing experience for me then and it inspired me to follow my passion of playing jazz.Fast forward to a few months ago in London and I'm sitting with Martin Taylor in my brothers' house making music and swapping stories with my old friend. It was just as inspiring as the first time round and I was so happy that we captured it all on film so we could share the magic.My interview with Martin lasted over an hour and we ran the whole unedited version in Gypsy Jazz Secrets Magazine, and also a couple of duets.The video you're watching now is an impromptu version of Swing 42 which is an old Hot Club De France classic written by Django & Stephane. The Lost Fingers.I remember chatting about The Lost Fingers with Jazz guitarist Martin Taylor in a car on the way to a festival in Sweden where we were both playing a few years ago. He asked me if I knew of The Lost Fingers and I told him they had asked my brother Kevin to play with them, that I'd checked them out on YouTube and liked what I'd seen. Martin had also liked what he had heard and thought they would be right up my alley. He was right.When I got home and with a clear case of serendipity I was contacted by the band to see if I would join them on a couple of shows in Canada. A no brainer for me, I gladly accepted and then began to seriously check out their music and got really excited about the prospect of playing with them. They were like a breath of fresh air to me and I loved the pop direction they were taking Django's music. I loved the pink suits, the tongue in cheek humor and the choice of material from AC/DC (I'm a huge fan) to Samantha Fox (not a huge fan) but what the heck! Musically they presented a liberating experience crossing boundaries, having fun and all in the name of Django Reinhardt!The shows in Montreal and Quebec were fab and I was impressed by the hoards of fans they had and the guys in the band were sweethearts, talented and dedicated to their music.The show in Quebec was amazing with 50,000 people going crazy as the guys made their entrance by driving on stage in a pink Cadillac!It's a million miles from the kind of shows that any Gypsy Jazz band I know of put on and they are bringing Gypsy Jazz to a mass pop & rock & roll audience.

I show you up close how to play them in the context of A7 with two different 'landing' notes which create individual colors. Try the first five notes of the lick up and down the fretboard every three frets to create the diminished sound which totally works well over the dominant 7th. Now you know!

Flying High - Nuages above Sydney gypsyjams 2010-12-04 | http://www.RobinNolanTeaches.com "Nuages" above Sydney When I was in Sydney Australia this week I had the fantastic opportunity to go flying with my buddy Ian Cooper (amazing musician) who took me up in the skies above that beautiful city. Couldn't help thinking of Django's 'Nuages' as we climbed into the heavens and that in turn brought to mind a simple yet awesome move over that tune that Ian Date (guitarist extraordinaire) had been talking about earlier that day. Ian Date shows us how to bounce off the 4th chord (Minor 6) at the end of Nuages. When you land on the home key of G major at the end of the sequence instead of playing the Am7 -- Bbdim -- G/B sequence just bounce of the Cm6 chord and back to the G. Ian Date explains this concept with chords and soloing ideas. Ian has a wealth of killer diller tricks and a great insight into Jazz which can help us all keep the Jazz in Gypsy Jazz!
