Injured Hummingbird with Broken Beak Visits Feeder V23977 HummingBirdChannel 2018-06-22 | This poor female Allen's Hummingbird came in at dusk while I was filming back in March, 2018. Her upper beak appeared to be broken right at the base, possibly due to a head-on crash with something, making it nearly impossible for her to close it properly. In spite of this, it did look like she managed to get some nectar out of the feeder, although getting her beak into the small, bee-proof hole proved difficult. She did manage to fully insert it a couple of times (not filmed), and of course this wouldn't be a problem with most natural nectar sources. Slow Motion Hummingbird Catching Bugs 240fps V22537 HummingBirdChannel 2017-07-12 | Here we see a female Allen's Hummingbird hunting tiny airborne insects for breakfast. In real time this activity appears as a hummingbird buzzing back and forth, seemingly at random for no apparent reason. However, when slowed down 10x we can see that she's actually chasing (and catching) small gnats and other flying insects. Most people are familar with hummingbirds feeding on flower nectar, but small insects also make up a large part of their diet. Hummingbirds Humming: Real-Time B Reel Collection 2 V19021 HummingBirdChannel 2015-09-17 | This collection of close-up scenes features these amazing little birds hovering within inches of the camera and microphone so you get a clear view of the detail as well as the sound of their fast-moving wings making the humming sound that these birds are named for. Hummers of this size typically have wingbeat speeds around 30 cycles per second. A wingbeat cycle consists of one forward and one backward stoke, and each stroke generates a pulse of sound resulting in a hum of about 60Hz (2 strokes per cycle @ 30 cycles per second = 60 pulses per second). Of course this speed varies quite a bit depending upon the bird's size, weight, vigor, and flight mode. Even while they are more-or-less hovering stationary, you can hear AND see the wing beat variation thanks to the high speed shutter, which appears to "freeze" the wings in place at times when the wingbeat speed equals the camera frame rate of 30 fps. Random Hummingbird Nest Camera Setup Clips V16706 HummingBirdChannel 2014-11-22 | Here are a few realtime clips showing a female Allen's Hummingbird coming and going at her nest, along with the camera setup for the entire rearing documentary - viewed from the makeshift "blind" where the camera systems were operated from. At this point in time there was a Canon HF100 (the primary recording device) along with a low-resolution NighOwl IR night vision camera with motion detection/DVR to keep an eye on nest activity after dark. Note the plastic wrap canopy over the nest... The little bird had no way of knowing it at the time, but she had built the nest directly under the dripline of the roof gutter above. During a strong rainstorm earlier in this series, the gutter overflowed placing the nest right under a waterfall. Without the plastic wrap to deflect most of the water, the nest most surely would have been destroyed. Low Rez Hummingbird Egg Laying behavior (IR night vision) V15733 HummingBirdChannel 2014-04-14 | This footage was captured by a low-resolution infra-red night vision camera with motion detection. During the day prior to this footage I was hoping to record her laying the second egg, but by the time daylight faded to dusk, the nest still contained only one, and the HD webcam could no longer see. However, the night vision camera with infra-red illumination continued to see in the dark...The system monitored the nest all night and captured many clips and movement, but this one sequence, captured just after dawn, stood out as containing some rather unusual behavior.At 0:24 she climbs up onto the edge of the nest and begins a series of odd pumping movements, followed by short hop of sorts. A few seconds later she pokes around under her body as if to verify that everything is ok, and then settles back down into the nest. While the actual egg-laying is not visible in this clip, I believe this is when it happened, as I have never seen her position herself on the nest this way before, nor make the movements you see here. Hummingbird nest with egg (round 2) (Recorded Live Stream) HummingBirdChannel 2014-04-13 | 7:45 pm PDT Broadcast ended - Night time for TuffGirl...7:40 pm PDT Broadcast will end shortly - too dark to see!This is the second clutch of eggs for this bird in 2014 - She's just getting started with them... She comes and goes a lot and since the weather is relatively warm she can spend a lot of time away from the nest. She probably won't start incubating in earnest until after the second egg is laid, which will probably happen some time today or tonight.When not at the nest, she spends a lot of her time catching small flies in flight, and chasing other hummingbirds away from the feeder nearby She is very territorial and while she will tolerate other hummingbirds in the area, she will fiercely chase them away from the feeder if any come near it, which has earned her the name "TuffGirl". Of course while she's sitting on the nest, the feeder is fair game! This is a new camera setup and is still undergoing some tweaking. I hope to get a little better resolution, and of course Hi-Def video recordings will be made and uploaded along the way as well. Warbler invades Hummer nest site and fight ensues (low-rez webcam) V15725 HummingBirdChannel 2014-04-02 | A small bird (probably a Wilson's Warbler) gets a little too close for comfort, and mother hummingbird has to lay down the law... While the Warbler isn't really a threat to the hummingbird or nestlings (he's just nibbling the little bugs off of the rose bush), this mother hummingbird isn't going to have any of it and promptly gives the little bird what for! Since this was shot mostly with a low-resolution IR camera for monitoring the nest day and night, the quality and frame rate is pretty poor. Even so, it appears that the hummingbird physically attacks the Warbler several times in what looks like a knock-down, drag-out tumble. This aggressive behavior has been observed between hummingbirds while they are fighting over feeder territory, so it's probably standard operating procedure for small nest invaders as well.
