It is interesting to find out what is inside digital multimeters or DMM. We ripped apart on of the low cost ones you can easily find not he Internet as it gives a good idea of what to look for.
In this video I take this DMM apart to look at the various elements inside it. You will learn lots about these instruments by watching and understand them far better.
The teardown shows the probe contacts leading to the overall printed circuit board and the various resistors that are on the board along with the main processor.
Although the board appears to be simple and straightforward it packs in a lot of functionality. The unit can measure volts up to 600V on both DC and AC, although there are far more DC ranges. It measures DC current from a whopping 10 amps down to 200 microamps full scale and there are also ranges for diode and transistor measurements.
It was noticed that even for the high voltage ranges the small surface mount resistors are used,. They are often specified to these high voltages, but I am a little wary about subjecting them to some of the higher voltages, and current levels that the meter can carry.
The liquid crystal display is also interesting. Connected via pads on the main PCB and there is also a reflector and backlight.
Overall a very compact unit which gives a lot of functionality for a very small cost//For more information about digital multimeters: electronics-notes.com/articles/test-methods/meters/dmm-digital-multimeter.php
