. I tested the dissolved oxygen in 26 tanks across my shrimp room—and some of the results were not what I expected.
I compared floating-plant coverage, water movement, bubblers, fluffy algae and livestock. Every tank tested was in the Good or Optimised range, but the patterns between them were fascinating.
The biggest findings:
• Heavy surface plant coverage did not automatically mean low oxygen.• Water movement showed a clearer positive relationship with oxygen.• Bubblers did not show a notable direct oxygen increase, although they still help circulation, filtration and tank cleanliness.• Tanks where fluffy algae was recorded tended to have lower oxygen—but that result needs more testing.• The Vallisneria tank reached 8.4 mg/L, roughly 96% saturation at an estimated 22°C.
Remember: this was a practical one-session room survey, not a controlled laboratory experiment. These are correlations worth investigating, not proof of cause and effect.

The meter used was the Milwaukee MW600 PRO Portable Dissolved Oxygen Meter. It reads from 0.0 to 19.9 mg/L with 0.1 mg/L resolution and uses a refillable polarographic probe. Calibration and correct probe care are important when comparing readings.
