I’ve recorded electric bass for over 35 years — but I never really played it myself.
Now I do. One bar at a time. Punching in. Taking my time. Doing it myself.
And it’s been one of the most creatively satisfying things I’ve done in years.
As I've started to re-record my oldest material again, this has been a very satisfying journey and while some songs still require synths bass, I've enjoyed both layering real bass below the synth bass as well as hearing how many of these songs have gotten new life with something as simple as a real electric bass.
I don't have much time to practice, but the most important thing to me is getting it done. I know what I want to hear and I just keep going until I hear it. Even if I have to do it one bar at a time. No one knows how long it took to build the great pyramids, but the result is there, that's all that matters.
