I Slept in My Van in Muskoka’s Most Beautiful Town!

I’m stealth camping overnight in my minivan in beautiful Port Carling, Ontario—one of my favourite small towns in Muskoka! Come along for a full van life adventure packed with amazing local food, waterfront scenery, antique shops, historic locks and the famous Port Carling lift bridge.
Port Carling is often called the Hub of the Lakes, and this trip shows exactly why summer here feels so special.
I begin with a quick drive through downtown Port Carling before stopping at Pie Wood Fired Pizza Joint for what might be one of Muskoka’s best pizzas. I order the Ultimate Canadian, topped with mozzarella, smoked bacon, crispy bacon and a maple chili glaze, along with garlic aioli and a refreshing Lake of Bays beer. The waterfront view is incredible, and the pizza delivers an unforgettable cheese pull!
After dinner, I explore the Port Carling locks, docks, shops and the iconic “Wall” mural made from thousands of historic photographs. I also grab my favourite chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream and visit beautiful Hanna Park before finding a discreet place to park and setting up the minivan for a night of stealth camping.
Was it a peaceful overnight stay—or did I get caught? I wake up to a truck backing nearby, but there are no tickets and no warnings! After breaking camp, the morning continues with a latte and egg croissant, followed by a chocolate pistachio croissant and coffee from York & Mason.
The adventure keeps going with visits to Port Carling’s fascinating antique shops, where I find vintage signs, collectibles, KISS memorabilia, a life-size Deadpool and plenty of unexpected treasures. I also stop at Pete’s Links to support a local business and try a delicious peameal bacon sandwich with honey mustard.
To finish the day, I return to the locks and bridge to watch boats travel between Lake Muskoka and Lake Rosseau. The lock gates open, the water level changes, and the lift bridge rises to let larger boats pass—an amazing Muskoka experience!
