For the last TWO films, Godzilla has had a theme that is frankly disrespectful to the previous 70 years of kaiju music. It's a theme, sure, but not one that really says 'Japanese giant monster,' rather more of an average Hollywood creation to fill in the background. There's no rhythm like in Alexandre Desplat's Godzilla(2014), there's no grandiose substance like in Shiro Sagisu's Shin Godzilla, and there's no soul like in Akira Ifukube's numerous film scores. There can't even be an argument to justify an entirely synth orchestra for this since GMK already nailed that aspect(that film score ALSO has a live orchestra though). Already there's no live orchestra to lean on, but then you make a new knock-off of a perfectly good theme(Akira Ifukube's "Godzilla fanfare" specifically). I really don't understand why this was picked over composing a new variation of the fanfare, so to further prove my point, I present this short video, literally taking Tom Holkenborg's Godzilla theme and altering it to sound like Akira Ifukube's "Terror of Godzilla" track from King Kong vs Godzilla. I hope the next American Godzilla film will feature something better than this, but for now I'll be satisfied with Godzilla Minus One.
