Porth Wen Brickworks first built by Charles E Tidy, is now a disused Victorian brickworks which produced fire bricks, made from quartzite (silica) used to line steel-making furnaces. The substantial remains include a number of buildings and the remains of some of the machinery, but has some damage from sea erosion.
Porthwen Brickworks includes quarries, an incline tramroad to the works, and includes a crushing house, moulding shed, drying sheds, and kilns. The brickmaking operation was supported by storage hoppers, engine house, boiler house, chimneys, warehouse and a quay.

This watchtower is called Lady Emily’s Tower. It’s near Cefn yr Ogof and is a familiar landmark to everyone who drives along the A55 north Wales coast road between Abergele and Llanddulas. It’s a 1930s folly commissioned by Lord Hesketh’s wife, Lady Emily, so she and the children could go painting and take in the air.
Lady Emily’s Tower is connected with Gwrych Castle. From its perch, high above North Wales’s A55 road, you can see breathtaking views east and west along the coast. Looking out to sea from the tower is stunning, with the windfarms peppering the northern horizon.

Dinorwic quarry is a large former slate quarry, now home to the Welsh National Slate Museum, located between the villages of Llanberis and Dinorwig in Wales. At its height at the turn of the century, it was the second largest slate quarry in Wales, after the neighbouring Penrhyn quarry near Bethesda. Dinorwic covered 700 acres consisting of two main quarry sections with 20 galleries in each. Extensive internal tramway systems connected the quarries using inclines to transport slate between galleries.

The Göta Canal was one of the largest civil engineering projects ever undertaken in Sweden. The canal stretches from Sjötorp on Lake Vänern to Mem on the east coast. It has a length of 190 kilometres and a total of 58 locks. Of this distance, 87 kilometres were dug by hand.
To start the work on the aqueduct, the canal first had to be drained and after that 25 000 cubic meters of rubble was removed from the sides and bottom of the canal.
Instead of building the aqueduct on the location, it was transported ready-built by boat to Kungs Norrby. It weighed 4,500 tons and was moved a distance of 70 metres on land. After lifting the aqueduct on twelve jacking points, four horizontal jacks were used to push it forward. The 47-metre long and 18-metre wide structure was moved at a pace of three metres an hour until it was finally in place.

The High Coast Bridge (Swedish: Högakustenbron), also known as the Veda Bridge/ Höga Kusten (Swedish: Vedabron), is a suspension bridge crossing the mouth of the river Ångermanälven near Veda, on the border between the municipalities of Härnösand and Kramfors in the province of Ångermanland in northern Sweden. The area is often referred to as High Coast, hence its name. The older bridge across the same river is the Sandö Bridge, in a new extension of the European route E4. It is (as of 2016) the third longest suspension bridge in Scandinavia (after the Great Belt Fixed Link in Denmark and Hardanger Bridge in Norway), the fourth longest in Europe, and the 21st longest of the world.
The total length is 1,867 metres (6,125 ft), the span is 1,210 metres (3,970 ft), and the column pillars are 180 metres (591 ft) tall. The max height for ships is 40 metres (131 ft). The bridge was constructed between 1993 and 1997 and was officially opened on 1 December 1997 by king Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden.

Döda Fallet translated in to English is "The Dead Falls". Spring floods use to thunder through Storforsen, but suddenly fell silent. The waterfall at Storfosen was a barrier. Tännforsen began to become a tourist destination as early as 1835, when the Skalstugevägen road to Norway was inaugurated by King Karl XIV Johan. Visitors with time and money to travel and experience new places could then take a boat trip over to the north side of the fall on the quieter Lake Tännsjön upstream from the rapids. The Swedish Tourist Association took the next step and built not only a motorway up to the waterfall Tännforsen but also a tourist station in 1906. It then grew as a tourist destination and the guest book at the tourist station was filling up with stories of guests’ experiences.
The summer of 1953 the waterfall was challenged by two adventurers from Järpen. The goal of Calle Thoresson was to ride a bicycle across the ridge on a rope, with the help of Kjell Zetterström hanging in a swing under the bike and rope, as balance and counterweight. The drama was reinforced by the fact that the rope slackened just as they were in the middle of the fall and Kjell partially came under water. In spite of this, Calle managed to keep the balance and they managed and prevailed to the audience’s relief.
Older photographs of Tännforsen have a large stone in the middle of the waterfall. It was the Björnstenen (The Bear Stone), named after the story that a bear would once cross the waterfall but got stuck in the middle. The boulder came off suddenly during the spring flood in 1992, without anyone seeing.
Like many other waterfalls, Tännforsen has been threatened by hydropower expansion. The last time that happened was during the 1940s when the Swedish National Water Board wanted to curb the water. People living in the area protested and did not want the waterfall to be wiped out and silenced. Strong resistance was made and in 1971 the waterfall was protected as a nature reserve with the purpose of preserving one of Sweden’s largest undeveloped waterfalls. Thanks to their efforts, the area is still a very popular tourist destination.

In the great Northern War, in late summer 1718, King Karl XII instructed his general Carl Gustav Armfeldt to immediately take the then Danish city of Trondheim in order to be able to annex the northern part of Norway. With an army of 10,000 men camped near Duved in Jämtland, Armfeldt moved to Trondheim and besieged the city, which successfully defended itself. The supplies from Sweden could not be delivered due to the onset of winter conditions. By January 7, 1719, when Armfeldt received the news of the death of Charles XII and the order to retreat to Sweden, almost 4,000 soldiers had already died.
Inadequately equipped, starving, freezing and already exhausted from the siege, the almost 6,000 soldiers made their way home. Already on the 30 km long march to Tydal, 200 soldiers died of hypothermia. Four days later, in cold but clear weather, the army set out to cover the 55 kilometers to Handöl.
On the afternoon of January 12th, the army was surprised by a blizzard near Øyfjellet and forced them to a makeshift camp. 200 soldiers froze to death during the night and while the storm continued the next day, another 2,800 men died. On the morning of January 14th, Armfeldt decided to leave with the rest of the survivors despite the still raging storm. On the way to Handöl and from there to Duved to the main camp, Armfeldt lost a further 700 men; of the 2,100 survivors, over 600 were crippled for life by the frost.
In 1892 an obelisk about 4 to 5 m high was erected in Duved in Jämtland, Sweden, to commemorate the campaign and subsequent death march of the Carolinian Army. On the front inscribed are the year 1719 and the words "Caroliner" and a little below that "af fosterlandet" (from the motherland). At each of the four corners of the base there is a small cannon barrel with the muzzle pointing downwards.

The water falls 50 meters wide and 14 meters deep down along some rocks. Depending on the season the amount of water that falls is from 100 to 400 m³ per second. The waterfall provides a moisture damp that gives the woods a unique microclimatic there some rare lichens and mosses thrives very well. A wooded island splits up the river and divides the waterfall in two parts, both from the north and south side you can only see one side (but in this video you can see both sides). I feel the song chosen for this video, "Where's My Other Half" by Mikki Aglaganov not only title fits perfectly with this 2 sides waterfall but also the sound of it.
In the winter when the river is frozen you can go to the island where there is a stone-cave. The cave is about 14 meter long and has two entrances. Guided tours over the frozen waterfall and to the ice-caves can be booked at Ristafallet’s reception. This tour can be done by children from 4 years and will take 1,5 to 2 ours.
Ristafallet’s waterfall is known from the movie Ronja the robber’s daughter. A movie made after the book by Astrid Lindgren which had its premiere in 1982. In the movie Ristafallet is called Glupafallet. Ronja sits on one of the big rock in the middle of the waterfall when screaming her ‘spring yell’. A rather funny detail is that the ride on the water towards the waterfall is filmed down streams from the falls. When following the hiking trail through the forest you find a sign showing where Ronja and Birk had their ride on the white water.

A grade II listed structure, the Folly is possibly late 16th century in origin remodelled in later 18 century. Coursed roughly square rubble walls. Roofless. Square on plan. Now partly ruinous tall structure, western wall has gone. Large roundheaded arch with dressed stone voussoirs and
projecting imposts on east side. Signs of extensive alterations include traces of
windows built up and there is also evidence of a fireplace on the 2nd floor and a
staircase.
The Pleasure House is first mentioned by that name in a letter of 1738 and is first
shown on an early 18 century map of the Abbey drawn to show the estate at the time of the 2
William Abbots. The second Paul Orchard (1739 - 1812) is reputed
to have altered the building so that he could back his carriage in and admire the
view.

The remains of the Nynehead Boat Lift are of historical significance as it is the only one of the seven that includes a substantial amount of masonry. The image below shows the lift in 1999, after two years clearance work.
These lifts were certainly the first in Britain, and possibly the world, to be commercially successful and operated for nearly 30 years. In their day they were at the forefront of technology. One has to respect the courage and imagination of the Engineer and Proprietors in building such mechanisms when materials technology and iron founding were in their infancy. There is sufficient remaining of the lift at Nynehead to give an idea of what the structures must have looked like.
The operating machinery was removed shortly after closure in 1869 but a detailed description of the operation together with engineer’s drawings still exists. James Green’s lifts worked on a simple balance principle. Later generations of canal lift were hydraulically or electrically operated. Green’s tub boats carried 8 tons of cargo; there are now lifts in Europe that can accommodate 1350 ton boats.

Loch Etive (Scottish Gaelic, Loch Eite) is a 30 km sea loch in Argyll and Bute, Scotland. It reaches the sea at Connel, 5 km north of Oban. It measures 31.6 km (193⁄4 miles) long and from 1.2 km (3⁄4 mile) to 1.6 km (1 mi) wide. Its depth varies greatly, up to a maximum of 150 m (490 ft).
The name Etive is believed to mean "little fierce one" from the Gaelic goddess associated with the loch. It heads east for half its length alongside the main road and rail link to Oban, before heading northeast into mountainous terrain. A road along Glen Etive makes the head of the loch accessible from Glen Coe. The narrow mouth of the loch results in its most unusual feature, the Falls of Lora. Part of the north bank has been designated a Special Area of Conservation in particular due to old sessile oak woods. Surprisingly, a small colony of around 20 common seals is resident in Loch Etive.

Swindon Borough Council’s contractor, Alun Griffiths Ltd, built the new underpass underneath the M4 motorway to meet one of the planning conditions for the 4,500-home Wichelstowe development, which will also support a new district centre and around 2,000 new jobs by freeing up 12.5 hectares of employment land.
The engineering project was made all the more impressive because the motorway was kept open throughout. This was possible due to the creation of specially-built embankments either side of the M4, which were used to redirect lanes of traffic while work took place to excavate and build the underpass below.
The new underpass will eventually allow traffic to enter and leave Wichelstowe and join up with a new junction at Hay Lane and Wharf Road close to Junction 16 of the M4.

Chew Reservoir is a reservoir at the head of the Chew Valley in the Peak District National Park in Greater Manchester, England.
The reservoir scheme in the Greenfield and Chew Valleys by the Ashton Stalybridge and Dukinfield Waterworks Joint Committee commenced in 1870. Chew Reservoir was built to hold 200 million gallons of water. Intended to be a compensation reservoir, it also had a filtration plant so that it could be used for drinking water in times of drought. Completed in 1912, the reservoir was the highest constructed in England, at 1,600 feet (488 m) above sea level, until the Cow Green Reservoir in the North Pennines in Teesside was completed in 1971. The reservoir is connected to the larger Dovestone Reservoir further down the Chew Valley by the Chew Brook.

The video shows high above Dovestone Reservoir stands the derelict remains from the Victorian age of a building whose origins continue to puzzle local historians. Named the mystery of Bramley’s Cot, remains unsolved.
Suggestions to the building’s former uses include a shepherd’s hut, explosive store or even a lodge or shelter for Victorian shooting parties. It is believed to have been built between 1857 and 1889 possibly by workers from Greenfield Mill (now Fletchers) for one-time owner Bramley Bottomley. Bramley and wife Sarah are buried at St Chad’s Church, Uppermill.
Alternatively, it has been suggested tragic MP James Platt, who was killed in a shooting accident at Ashway Gap in 1857, or cotton manufacturer Abel Buckley MP JP, who bought the estate and moor around 1880, had the hut built.

John Platt of Oldham built a Neo-Gothic mansion at Ashway Gap on the south side of the valley in 1850. It was used as a shooting lodge but after his brother James's death in a shooting accident on the moor above it, the house was left empty. The house was later acquired by the Ashton-under-Lyne, Stalybridge and Dukinfield Waterworks Joint Committee. Boundary stones demarcating the extent of the estate are located at intervals along the footpaths along the south side of the reservoir. During World War I the waterworks board offered the house for use as a hospital. It was demolished in 1981.
The Ashworth Cross memorial to James Platt MP 1857
On the northern end of Dove Stone Moss, above the Ashway Gap, the Ashway Stone is a memorial to James Platt, MP for Oldham, who was killed by an accidental discharge of the gun of Josiah Radcliffe, the Mayor of Oldham.
The reservoir scheme in the Greenfield Valley and Chew Valley by the Ashton-Under-Lyne, Stalybridge and Dukinfield Waterworks Joint Committee commenced in 1870. The scheme was completed with Dovestone Reservoir in 1968 to collect water from the surrounding moorland. The main contractor was A.E. Farr (Civil Engineers) of Westbury, Wiltshire. Its construction was opposed by local mill owners, who claimed that damming the river would cut off their water supply. As a result, a tunnel was built higher up in the hillside to bypass the reservoir.
During a visit in 1981 to attend the wedding of Prince Charles and Princess Diana, King Taufa'ahau Tupou IV of Tonga visited Dovestone Reservoir. To commemorate the visit, a carved stone has been set into the dam wall of the Yeoman Hey Reservoir.

The river rises at Wroughton to the south of Swindon and runs in a generally northern direction, passing to the west of the town via Shaw. Near Roughmoor it is joined from the west by the Lydiard Brook. The river joins the Thames on the southern bank near Calcutt, east of Cricklade, just upstream of Water Eaton House Bridge. Its length is about 7.1 miles (11.5 km) from its source to the Lydiard Brook, and 6.4 miles (10.3 km) from there to the Thames.
The river has been subject to a restoration project run by the Wiltshire Wildlife Trust. The final stage, completed in December 2007, was to build a tunnel near the Great Western Way at Rivermead to allow the nine species of fish to travel the length of the river without obstruction.

Avebury henge and stone circles are one of the greatest marvels of prehistoric Britain. Built and much altered during the Neolithic period, roughly between 2850 BC and 2200 BC, the henge survives as a huge circular bank and ditch, encircling an area that includes part of Avebury village. Within the henge is the largest stone circle in Britain - originally of about 100 stones - which in turn encloses two smaller stone circles.
Avebury is part of an extraordinary set of Neolithic and Bronze Age ceremonial sites that seemingly formed a vast sacred landscape. They include West Kennet Avenue, West Kennet Long Barrow, The Sanctuary, Windmill Hill, and the mysterious Silbury Hill. Many can be reached on foot from the village. The Alexander Keiller Museum also displays many notable finds from the Avebury monuments. Together with Stonehenge, Avebury and its surroundings are a World Heritage Site.
