At this Secret Science Club event, pioneering researchers Francis Shen and Adriana Galván discuss groundbreaking discoveries about the adolescent brain—and how these scientific insights are affecting our legal system, public policy, and society.
Adriana Galván is a professor of psychology and dean of undergraduate education at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). An expert on the adolescent brain and the author of over 100 scientific papers, she has made seminal discoveries about brain development in children, teens, and adults. In 2019, she received the Troland Research Award from the National Academy of Sciences and the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers. Her research on the adolescent brain has played a central role in landmark Supreme Court decisions regarding the culpability and punishment of juvenile offenders.
Francis X. Shen is a professor at Harvard Medical School’s Center for Bioethics and an affiliated faculty member at Harvard Law School. He is a pioneer in establishing the interdisciplinary field of law and neuroscience, and conducts research on how insights from neuroscience and artificial intelligence can make the legal system more just and effective. In 2021, he was awarded the Early Career Scholars Medal from the American Law Institute. He is the director of Harvard’s Shen Lab: Law, Ethics, Neuroscience & Artificial Intelligence, where the motto is “every story is a brain story.”
This Dana Foundation Neuroscience & Society lecture is part of the Dana Education program, which includes the coordination of Brain Awareness Week in mid-March. Alik Widge is a psychiatrist, biomedical engineer, and neuroscientist at the University of Minnesota. In the clinic, he treats patients for a variety of conditions, including anxiety, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, substance addictions, and post-traumatic stress disorder. In his lab, he focuses on the development of closed loop neuro-devices that sense the brain and respond in real time to regulate the brain circuits involved in mental illness. Current technologies being developed include methods for restoring healthy function in brain circuits controlling decision-making, self-regulation, and mental flexibility. The author of over 100 scientific articles, Dr. Widge and his research have been featured on NPR and in Futurism, Science News, Quartz, Gizmodo, and Nature.

In this lecture, we explore the “wired” brain and how research involving deep brain electrodes tells us what's happening in our brains when we gamble. Prepare to explore the inner workings of the “body electric” with neuroscientist Sridevi Sarma.
Sridevi Sarma is a neuroscientist, biomedical engineer, professor, and the associate director of the Institute for Computational Medicine at Johns Hopkins University. The author of over 150 scientific papers, she is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers. Last year, Dr. Sarma was the winner of the inaugural “Pitch It On!” competition for her invention EZTrack, which creates a heat map of the brain to help doctors determine the source of seizures in drug-resistant epilepsy patients. She has appeared regularly as a featured scientist on the Emmy-award-winning NatGeo series Brain Games.
