Woody is demonstrating the value of variety in a workout routine, proving that changing the workout periodically is vital for continuous growth. He emphasizes the use of lighter weights, showing that one doesn't need heavy dumbbells to build strength. The video highlights the importance of focusing on good form, a critical aspect particularly as one ages. This not only ensures effective muscle engagement but also prevents injuries, making the workout safe and beneficial.Video 9 - The Amazing Power of GF 99 (FINAL Video based on Andy Davis’s article)DIVE TALK+2024-03-22 | GF99 (Woody calls it “the speedometer of Gradient Factors”), if used properly with PROPER TRAINING, can be very powerful!
Quoted from Andy Davis below in his article “Shearwater Dive Computer Settings: Become A Power User!”
Know if you are absorbing or releasing nitrogen.
Understand your off gassing efficiency.
Help avoid causing decompression stress.
Have flexible real time control over conservatism.
Optimize the length and depth of safety stops.
Monitor how quickly your nitrogen level drops.
Conduct ideal multi level dives.
It’s totally OK to leave your Shearwater computer on the default settings. In fact I recommend you do until properly trained and fully show an instructor that you have a very good understanding of the settings discussed in this series. But Shearwater computers are powerful and if utilized correctly, you can take advantage of your Shearwater’s dive instruments (such as GF99 and SurGF) and really enhance the efficiency of your off gassing.

buymeacoffee.com/andydavistech/e/233171Supplemental Video 4 - GF Low, why is it so difficult? (By Veronika Sievers).DIVE TALK+2024-03-21 | GF Low - why is it so difficult? We understood now that GF Low is the one that defines where to do the first stop on the ascent, but no one wants to tell anyone where to set it. Why? When setting the GF Low, we have to take into account that maybe on our first stop, just the fastest tissues desaturate, while medium and slower tissues are still ongassing. And this is what makes it so difficult: Stopping deeper might stop the bubble formation, but if it leads to a higher saturation in other tissues, bubbles may form out of these tissues later. And unfortunately, this field is still full of insecurities.

And we all heard they cause DCS. But wait - how clear is this relationship between an actual dive, bubbles and DCS? Unfortunately, there is just one word to describe it: Chaotic. The same person can do the same dive profile on different days, once she gets no bubbles at all, once lots of bubbles. Two persons can do the same dive, one gets bent, the other is not even tired. So, there is actually not very much we know. The few things that are certain: - no bubbles, no DCS - leaving the water with a lower GF means a lower risk (but never zero) Thats it. The rest is a big questionmark. Be careful, dive safe and embrace the small risk you can not avoid - it’s worth it!
By Veronika Sievers, Punkfish Academy http://punkfish-academy.comVideo 8 - The Relationship Between GF99 and SurGF (Based Off Andy Davis’s Article)DIVE TALK+2024-03-19 | In this YouTube video, I will explore Andy Davis’s discussion in his article titled “Shearwater Dive Computer Settings: Become A Power User!”, (link to his article is scubatechphilippines.com/scuba_blog/shearwater-dive-computer-settings), where he discusses the relationship between the GF99 and surGF displays in shearwater dive computers. Dive computers are essential tools for monitoring and managing dive profiles, and understanding what these displays are telling you and how they work together can be really helpful.
GF99, tells you the real-time relationship between the pressure of nitrogen dissolved within your body and the ambient pressure surrounding you.
Andy in his article takes us through a NDL dive and shows us the GF99 and SurGF displays as you progress through the phases of this dive. We will look at the descent phase, the bottom time phase, the end of the bottom time phase, the start of the ascent phase, during the ascent phase, the start of the safety stop phase, the end of the safety stop phase and surfacing from the dive phase.
Understanding the relationship between GF99 and surGF becomes even more meaningful when planning multi level multiple dives in one day (the subject of the next video). By understanding these settings, divers can control the dive to find the right balance between dive time, depth and safety.
Join me in this video as we dive deeper into the GF99 and surGF displays on shearwater dive computers, exploring their impact on dive planning and safety. Whether you are a novice diver or an experienced professional, understanding these settings will enhance your diving knowledge and help you make informed decisions underwater. I hope you enjoy this video as I found Andy’s example very informative as it relates to rhetorical relationship between GF99 and surGF in shearwater dive computers on an example NDL dive he takes us through.Supplemental Video 2 - GF Low & NDL (by Dominik Elsasser of Punkfish Diving).DIVE TALK+2024-03-18 | Dominik Elsasser (SSI Instructor at Punkfish Diving, an SSI Diamond Instructor Training Center), does an outstanding job of discussing the relationship between and use of GF Low in recreational no decompression limit “NDL” diving. More on his amazing dive center at punkfish-diving.com/start.html .Video 1(A) - MUST watch before watching any of the other videos in this series.DIVE TALK+2024-03-17 | Before you delve into the other videos in this series, it's crucial to watch this one first as it relates to exploring Andy Davis's insightful article titled "Shearwater Dive Computer Settings: Become A Power User!". You can find the article at scubatechphilippines.com/scuba_blog/shearwater-dive-computer-settings
I urge you to practice safe and conservative diving. Recreational divers should refrain from altering the Gradient Factor settings on their dive computers. It's strongly advised to stick with the most conservative default settings until you've gained substantial knowledge in this area and have perfected your buoyancy and trim control underwater. There's no need to rush. Let's foster a learning environment for everyone and together, create a more welcoming world of diving.
The field of Decompression Sickness is still very much a theoretical one, and even the leading minds admit there's a lot left to learn. Use these videos to understand these settings but never as a justification for non-conservative diving. Regardless of your skill level, even if you're a dive professional, safety and conservative diving should always be at the forefront of your scuba diving adventures. Enjoy the journey and never stop learning!Correction Video 1 (correcting Woody Screw Up In Video 4)DIVE TALK+2024-03-16 | Woody (me) screwed up in video 4 and said GF Low had to do with the “slowest tissue”. I was corrected (rightfully) by one of our amazing viewers who said “GF low has nothing to do with the slowest tissues, they are very likely not yet involved. It means the supersaturation of the LEADING tissue during your ascent….” And a the rest of the correction is in this short “correction video 1” and I also edited video 4 by adding a snippet to the begging of it. These correction videos are going to make this series outstanding and so valuable for all (especially me) to learn from! :)Video 4 - Gradient Factor Low (Based off Andy Davis’s Article)DIVE TALK+2024-03-16 | Hello everyone, welcome back to our channel. Today, we're going to dive deep into an important concept that gets overlooked quite often, the Gradient Factor Low, specifically on a Shearwater dive computer. This might sound a bit technical to some, but I promise to keep it simple and easy to understand.
In a nutshell, the Gradient Factor Low is all about the saturation level of the leading tissue in your body during the deepest part of your dive. It's a crucial setting that determines your first decompression stop during an ascent. GF Low has nothing to do with the slowest tissues, they are very likely not yet involved (I made an error saying that in the he video btw). It means the supersaturation of the LEADING tissue during your ascent, and you stop when the leading tissue reaches the x% (Low GF setting) of its M value. But don't worry, I will break it down further for you in this video.
Towards the last minute and a half of this video, I have an awesome illustration and explanation of the Gradient Factor Low, taken from a video by Dr. Simon Mitchell titled "Decompression Controversies". It's a fantastic resource which I highly recommend you to check out. I have included the link to Dr. Mitchell's full video in the description below. You can watch it by clicking youtu.be/UY61E49lyos.
All of the information that I am going to share with you today is based on the comprehensive article titled "Shearwater Dive Computer Settings: Become A Power User!" by Andy Davis. This article is a treasure trove of information for anyone looking to understand their dive computer settings better. Again, the link to this article is in the description below. You can access it directly by clicking scubatechphilippines.com/scuba_blog/shearwater-dive-computer-settings/.

I’ll break down complex terms into easy-to-understand language, making it perfect for both beginners and seasoned divers. Quoted from Andy’s article “SurGF display lets you know what the pressure difference would be if you immediately surfaced. It allows you to have real time control over your nitrogen dissolved in your body and the water pressure surrounding you.” Be sure to like, share, and subscribe for more in-depth diving content.Video 3 - Gradient Factor High (Based off Andy Davis’s article).DIVE TALK+2024-03-12 | Welcome to my latest video, where I delve deep into understanding the meaning of 'Gradient Factor High' on a Shearwater dive computer (based off Andy Davis’s article “Shearwater Dive Computer Settings: Become a Power User!”
In simple terms, the Gradient Factor High (GF High) is your personal guide to a safe surfacing point during a dive. It's like your trustworthy co-pilot, ensuring you reach the surface safely by controlling the decompression stops towards the end of your dive.
The GF High is the second part of the gradient factor setting on your Shearwater computer, the first being the Gradient Factor Low (GF Low). Together, they help you manage your decompression and ascent rate according to your comfort and safety levels.
This video specifically focuses on the GF High feature, explaining its role in your diving experience. I will walk you through how to set it up, interpret its readings, and use it effectively for a safe and enjoyable dive.
So, whether you're a seasoned diver looking to fine-tune your understanding or a beginner looking to learn more about your gear, this video is for you! Dive in with me as I unravel the mysteries of Gradient Factor High. Enjoy the journey, and let's make diving safer together!Video 2 - Gradient Factors (Based off Andy Davis’s article).DIVE TALK+2024-03-12 | Welcome to video 2 where I simplify the concept of gradient factors on a Shearwater dive computer. Imagine gradient factors as a guide to your underwater adventure, telling you how fast or slow you should ascend to ensure your safety.
In simple terms, Gradient Factors are settings on your Shearwater dive computer that allow you to personalize your decompression algorithm. The lower gradient factor (GF Low) tells you when to start your decompression, while the higher gradient factor (GF High) guides you when to surface.
Think of it as a road trip - GF Low is the point where you start considering taking a break, and GF High is your final destination. By adjusting these settings, you can control your decompression stops and ascent rate to match your comfort and safety levels.
Stay tuned to this video to learn more about how gradient factors work and how to configure them for your next dive. Remember, understanding your gear is the key to a safe and enjoyable dive!Video 1(B) - Become a Shearwater Power User (Based off Andy Davis’s amazing article)DIVE TALK+2024-03-12 | I am thrilled to present a series of videos that delve into Andy Davis's enlightening article, “Shearwater Dive Computer Settings: Become a Power User!”, designed to transform divers into "Shearwater Power Users"! As Andy Davis puts it, “not utilizing your Shearwater computer's advanced settings is like owning a Ferrari but never shifting past second gear.” His article does an excellent job of demystifying the advanced features of Shearwater in a comprehensible manner.
In this video series, I will dissect each feature highlighted in his article, providing a thorough understanding of each one. I believe that breaking down this article into bite-sized topics through these videos could be incredibly beneficial. These videos can even serve as valuable resources for computer training and deco classes.
Creating this series was a learning curve for me too, and I've gained so much from his article. This first video serves as an introduction to what we'll be exploring throughout the series. I hope you find it as useful as I have. I've enjoyed using these advanced settings, which are not just easy to use but also enhance safety. So sit back, enjoy, and let's dive right into it!
