Marilyn Manson hosted the event, which featured Blink-182, AFI, Razorlight, and Deftones performing cover versions of Cure songs. Cure frontman Robert Smith joined Blink-182 onstage to perform "All of This", a song he had sung on for their eponymously titled 2003 album. During set changes the audience were shown many of the band's music videos from throughout their career. The Cure themselves closed the show by performing a number of songs including "Friday I'm in Love". Their performances of "Taking Off", and "10:15 Saturday Night" were selected to be shown in the final broadcast, representing bookends of their career ("Taking Off" being their most recent single while "10:15 Saturday Night" was the first track on their 1979 debut album). Tim Weber of BBC News remarked of the performance that "from the first riff it was obvious that they have managed to haul their music firmly into the 21st century. The Cure may still be the masters of mourning, but their performance had an edge and drive that would do any nu metal band proud. Even old favourites like 'Friday I'm in Love' were—almost—purged of the popcorn sound of the New Wave 1980s." Chino Moreno of Deftones]Recorded live at Dynamo Open Air Festival, Kunstijsbaan, Eindhoven, The Netherlands on May 30th 1998.In 1998 Deftones played the famous Dynamo Open Air festival. 1998 had one of the best and most diverse line-ups in the history of the festival. Deftones played on the second day, right after Soulfly. Soulfly, a band formed by Max Cavalera's formely of Sepultura, was on their first tour and named their band after the lyrics of the Deftones song 'Headup' (Soufly Fligh High!). Deftones and Max had been friends for a few years since Max' late stephson Dana Wells was a huge Deftones fan and introduced Max to the band. This song was dedicated to Dana who was killed in a car accident in 1996. I was in the audience during this show and the atmosphere was just great. As you can see in this video, friends and family (along with Stef and Abe) were on the side of the stage watching the performance. I was happy to see Chino appear on this song live and Dutch National Television TMF recorded it. I added a better pro-audio source to the video. Deftones' set at Dynamo after Soulfly was very powerful and aggressive and a little bit better than their show at Pinkpop, 2 days after this (also attended by me). They then drafted Aimee Echo as vocalist after asking if she could scream. John Monte joined as guitarist but did not last long and they went through a string of guitarists before finding Mike Tempesta. The group began opening for large name bands such as Sublime, Helmet, Deftones, and Korn and struck a deal with Hollywood Records. The band also toured the UK with Tura Satana and Coal Chamber respectively in 1997 before playing the UK Ozzfest in June 1998. This trip awarded them press coverage that they did not find in the states.
