carstereochickAre you trying to pair a new phone to your Alpine UTE-73BT, CDE-172BT or CDE-175BT? Are you having Bluetooth connection issues with your Alpine radio? Audio streaming issues? This video explains how to resolve pairing issues with existing phones or how to pair a new phone to your Alpine UTE-73BT, CDE-172BT or CDE-175BT.
Whenever I experience connection issues or audio streaming issues with any aftermarket Bluetooth radio, the 1st thing I do is clear memory from both devices and try to repair. If the issue is still there, I make sure the operating system on the phone is up to date and all apps are up to date. If you're still experiencing issues with a particular app, try deleting the app and re-installing it. Lastly, make sure the firmware in the radio is up to date. These steps are how I usually resolve all Bluetooth connection issues with the Alpine UTE-73BT, CDE-172BT or CDE-175BT.

Does the DMX958XR really have a 5 volt preamp? Kenwood eXcelon car stereos have been known for having that extra punch largely due to their higher voltage preamp. The difference between a 4 volt and 5 volt preamp is truly noticeable even on a display board when doing an A/B comparison between two different car stereos. That extra volt packs a mighty punch. A car stereo equipped with a higher voltage preamp is one truly attractive and sought after feature which is why Kenwood eXcelon car stereo models, such as the DMX958XR, are so popular.
But is 5 volt what you're really getting with the Kenwood DMX958XR? How can you be sure? With supply chain and chip shortage issues, it's hard to know for certain. That's why @carstereochick has been busy testing Kenwood car stereo preamps to find out and verify. Watch this DMX958XR preamp review to find out if this Kenwood eXcelon car stereo is true to its ratings.
The Kenwood eXcelon DMX958XR is appears to have everything an audiophile would want in a double din head unit. Vibrant capacitive display, Micro HDMI input, USB C input, 13 band graphic EQ, 5 Volt front, rear and subwoofer preamp, built in crossovers, digital time alignment, Kenwood Supreme, iDatalink Maestro compatible, HD Radio, SiriusXM ready, WIRELESS Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, short chassis and more!
Compatible with Kenwood's HD reverse camera, the high definition display stands out vibrantly amongst its competitors. The DMX958XR has that signature eXcelon car stereo sound that we've all come to love - smoothness, detail, vibrancy and warmth. But is it REALLY pushing out 5 volts on the front, rear and subwoofer preamp? The results may surprise you.

To execute this Alpine firmware update you will need a small USB flash drive formatted to FAT32.
IMPORTANT - Prior to performing the Alpine firmware update, take note or take pictures of all of your audio settings, EQ, Crossovers, Sub level/phase, radio preset stations etc. Once the Alpine update is complete, you will need to do a full reset on the radio which wipes out all settings/memory. This also clears your phone connection, but this video shows you how to re-establish Apple CarPlay/Android Auto once the Alpine firmware update is complete.
This Alpine firmware update covers: -Wired and wireless CarPlay connectivity issues -Echo when making phone calls with external amplifiers connected to the preamp -Flickering camera screen when selecting camera from the AUX screen -Apple CarPlay disappears from Function Select popup on the device list when the CarPlay connection is changed to another iPhone -RUX-HO2 connectivity with wireless CarPlay -Adds Tidal support
Why perform this Alpine update? Firmware updates are designed to improve functionality and resolve quirks. It's important to keep your Alpine firmware up to date for optimal performance.

Scopemeter results!!!carstereochick2023-01-07 | In today’s video @carstereochick tests the Kenwood DMX709s with her Fluke Scopemeter. Is the Kenwood DMX709s considered a TRUE eXcelon head unit?? The proof is in the preamp! Annie puts the Kenwood DMX709s to the test to find out if it has a true 5 volt preamp or perhaps it's equipped with something a little less impressive. The Kenwood DMX709s and DMX7709s are the direct replacements for the DMX706s and DMX7706s. The DMX709s being part of the eXcelon series with 2 year warranty and 5 volt preamp whereas the DMX7709s is part of Kenwood's regular series, 1 year warranty and 4 volt preamp. The two predecessors (DMX706s and DMX7706s) have been absolute workhorses and a fantastic value so we expected the DMX709s and DMX7709s to be just as robust and reliable.
On paper the Kenwood eXcelon DMX709s is jam packed with awesome features - vibrant capacitive display, Micro HDMI input, 13 band graphic EQ, 5 Volt front, rear and subwoofer preamp, built in crossovers, time alignment, Kenwood Supreme, iDatalink Maestro compatible, HD Radio, SiriusXM ready, wired Apple CarPlay/Android Auto and more! On the display board in the showroom the vibrant display is an absolute stand out. On top of that it sounds like any other eXcelon in terms of the head units detail, vibrancy and warmth.
But is it REALLY pushing out 5 volts on the front, rear and subwoofer preamp? The results are truly SHOCKING!!!

Her husband, business partner, technician John previously upgraded the full audio system in this 2018 Wrangler using the PAC AP4-CH41R2, JL Audio Twk-88, JL amplifiers, Morel speakers, JL Audio Stealthboxes, etc. However - the client recently started having issues with his 8.4" UConnect display and decided to upgrade to wireless CarPlay with the 9-inch Alpine i509-WRA-JL. In order to replace the Jeep 8.4 Uconnect with the Alpine i509, John had to relocate the Twk-88, but 1st he also had to see why the Jeep 8.4 Uconnect was not working.
If you're thinking about buying the Alpine i509-WRA-JL and installing it yourself, this video is for you. Especially if you're the type that doesn't like to read directions. There is no sugar coating this installation. Especially if you think this is something you're going to tackle over the weekend like some kind of Ikea bedroom set. You know those projects you try and do over the weekend with your spouse, right? Thinking you'll be done in a couple hours and before you know it your Saturday is shot, it's dark out and you still got hours left. It's a bit like that.
This is also what it's like on any given day at the shop! If you're curious about how John and Annie manage work together as a husband and wife team you may find this entertaining. They each have very different approaches to the process. However, their differences ultimately make the end result they deliver to the client much better than either could possibly put forth on their own. We hope you enjoy watching this Alpine i509-WRA-JL installation video.
Towards the end of the installation process you will find the pre-amp voltage testing completed using our Fluke 123B Oscilloscope and Audio Control DM-RTA. The results are quite interesting to say the least!

John and I spent the day together and you'll see what it's like at a day in our car stereo shop. Nothing ever goes as planned or scheduled in car stereo installation. There are unexpected issues that pop up usually during what are supposed to be the simplest jobs of the day in our car audio shop.
The one car stereo installation job that went as planned is the 2020 Jeep Wrangler equipped with an Alpine X409-WRA-JL that all of a sudden would not turn on. After resetting the Maestro module, we had a hunch there may be more to the glitch and ended up doing a 2020 Jeep Wrangler Auxiliary battery replacement at the same time.
There are a couple different ways to tackle the Jeep aux battery replacement, but you'll have to watch and find out what method John prefers to use. I think his is the easier/quicker method. Having just had to replace the aux battery in our own 2019 Jeep Wrangler - which died out of nowhere - it's something that's been on our mind and something we try and make our fellow Wrangler clients aware of. In this video our client Charles (who you may remember from a previous Jeep Wrangler Stereo Upgrade video) brings his 2020 Wrangler to the shop to have his Jeep auxiliary battery replaced and also have his iDatalink Maestro RR module replaced on his X409-WRA-JL.
Added into the mix was a simple Viper Smart Start upgrade from 3G to 4G that turned into a little bit more work than planned. PLUS - check out the Phase 1 Renault Clio!!! Imported from Japan, this is one of 1,555 production vehicles ever made. It arrived to us with a hole in the dash where the car stereo would go and was scheduled to simply get a nice basic Sony single din Bluetooth receiver installed. However, it turned into a bit more than a car audio installation once John got it inside the garage.

The XAV-AX6000 features Wireless Apple CarPlay & Android Auto, 5 volt pre-amp, iDatalink Maestro compatibility, rear USB C input PLUS a Micro HDMI input. In this video I explain what adapters will be needed to utilize this micro HDMI input for either Apple or Android.
The whole reason I made this video is I had a client that really wanted to go with the XAV-AX6000 and utilize the HDMI with his Samsung S20. However, he couldn't bring his phone into the shop for me to test and confirm functionality and Sony wasn't able to tell me with 100% certainty that the adapters I wanted to use would work. Not only did it need to be compatible with his phone, but we needed to be able to mount the HDMI in a clean, flush way in the dash which required a total of 4 parts.
The whole reason I was hesitant is I have seen issues with Alpine whenever trying to use anything other than a straight HDMI to HDMI input. We once had a Toyota Tacoma where we had found a flush mount HDMI accessory specifically for one of the factory knockouts, BUT the backside of the adapter had a micro HDMI and the radio had standard HDMI. Even with adapters in place it didn't work. Alpine explained with THEIR car stereos, you couldn't use any adapters - just straight HDMI to whatever phone adapter. And although Sony couldn't guarantee what I was trying to do would work, they sounded more hopeful that with quality adapters, it would work. Thankfully it all worked!
Of course, Android was a bit quirkier in getting the HDMI to function compared to Apple, but you'll have to watch to see what I mean about quirky. Eventually I got it going using a Samsung S21 for testing. I will say the client's S20 was a bit glitchier, but I did also eventually get his working too.

How responsive is the touch screen? Is it really HD? How well does Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto work? How easy is it to switch between devices? Are Alpine's multi-view HD front and rear camera's really worth the premium price? You be the judge as I compare it to the Rydeen CM-HD4 and Kenwood CMOS-740HD.
Want to know what Alpine's RUX-H02 Halo Knob is all about? Check it out here. Can you really use two composite camera's or do you need any additional parts? What is the new EQ section like? That and SO much more is covered in this in depth Alpine iLX-507 review.

I've had a lot of inquires from clients about adding Apple CarPlay/Android Auto to these earlier Range Rover and Range Rover Sport models and for the longest time we had nothing to offer. To my knowledge, there still aren't any options from any US based suppliers, but thankfully there is a product available from ID Core, sold by Unique Auto Developments out of the UK. This Range Rover Apple CarPlay/Android Auto kit is compatible with 2009 - 2012 Range Rover, L322, Range Rover Sport L320 and Discovery 4 L319 equipped with the Denso radio. Product link below:
NOTE: I should add that my correspondence with the distributor from initial inquiry to order processing was extremely professional and their replies to my questions were quite prompt. BUT PLEASE KEEP IN MIND if you do plan to tackle this yourself or even have a professional installer do the work, there is a time zone difference that could potentially affect response time to technical support questions. Thanks to a wonderful video from YouTuber Sam's Motor & Machine, we didn't have any questions or run into anything we couldn't figure out. I highly recommend watching Sam's video!

Car Stereo Chick reviews the Stinger HEIGH10. Using an oscilloscope, AKA scopemeter, she puts the Stinger HEIGH10 to the test to find out if it really and truly has a 4 volt pre-amp or if it's all just a bunch of HYPE. In addition to testing the pre-amp voltage, she looks at the signal to see at what point the pre-amp actually distorts. Does it distort? Or does it stay clean? What about the internal amp? Curious to know at what point that distorts? Watch and find out.
Special cameo appearance by Kenwood KMM-X704. How does the $180 single din Kenwood eXcelon KMM-X704 pre-amp performance stack up against to the big and bad-ass looking Stinger HEIGH10? Be forewarned. And though she be but little, she is fierce. Watch to learn more!

It's a little hard to believe, but the Alpine Halo series head units actually only have ONE dedicated camera input. A bit mind boggling to me considering their entry level iLX-W650 has two composite camera inputs. Go figure. However, there is still a way to do a front and rear camera with their higher end head units like the iLX-F409.
Alpine offers these specific cameras along with the KCX-C2600B multi camera switcher to enable a front and rear camera. These are higher definition cameras that include multiple viewing angles. Easily change viewing angle with the tap of a button. Please keep in mind these cameras are designed specifically for select Alpine head units only! Check compatibility with your model prior to ordering.

Instead what I found was the SMD DD-1+ was a bit temperamental! Confused by the lack of consistency in the readings, I decided to do some more testing with our Fluke MD88 to truly verify voltage on the pre-amp of the Grundig/Stinger GX-3800. What was the real voltage? At one point does the pre-amp distort? Watch and find out.
ALSO - sneak peak at pre-amp voltage testing on the Alpine iLX-407 - is it really 4 volt? Or is it only 3.2? Subscribe to stay posted. My next product testing video is coming soon for the Alpine iLX-407. To be sure we're getting accurate readings, I will be using a Scope, the Fluke and the SMD-DD1+. It should be real interesting! Stay tuned.

This week in the shop we installed an aftermarket Apple CarPlay stereo in a 2016 Porsche Macan using the Metra 95-9616B and Alpine iLX-W650. This clients Porsche PCM Bose radio was no longer working. It was continuously rebooting and shutting down. Rather than repair the factory radio or buy a replacement Porsche PCM Radio, this client had us install an Alpine iLX-W650 featuring Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. We were able to retain the factory reverse camera, park sensors, steering wheel controls and re-use the factory SiriusXM antenna with the aftermarket SXV300 tuner. Steering wheel controls were also retained, however fader control and access to vehicle settings are lost. See how it all works in this Porsche Macan Apple CarPlay video by @carstereochick
