For this jam, I wanted to a) do something out of my comfort zone and b) develop a tool that I could use in U.I.G. One of the tools that's central to my final vision for the project is a dialogue system, so I ran with that idea and created a narrative game for this jam, a kind of interactive fiction.
It's a story about a mission control office and its graveyard shift watchman, Colt. Things are put into perspective when he receives a distress call from a young pilot in crisis. I hope you'll check out the game, and I hope you enjoyed learning about the process of making it. 2020 is kind of a crazy year... hope this gives you some respite.

Yep! I'm back with a final devlog to end the chapter of the Unnamed Indie Game. Which, by the way... is no longer unnamed.
A message for everyone who's been here since the beginning: If you've stuck through the hiatus, thank you, truly. Knowing I had an audience that really cared about this game was a big reason why I saw it through to its end, and I have y'all to thank for that. I hope this game lived up to your expectations, even if I had to cut it short—and I hope I did well by you and all the love you all poured into this game.
Though this is the end for A Forest Walk, this isn't the end for KalechippsDev. I truly don't know when I'll be ready to announce my next project or what it'll be, but it's out there and it's coming. And I can't wait :)

Hey y'all! It's been a while!
First, I appreciate the patience y'all have had with this devlog. With my going back to school for the fall, I'm getting less time to work on game dev and, consequently, Youtube. I want to make sure each video has a good amount of new content to share, so with less time to work on the game, I won't be able to release a new video as often.
That being said, I'm excited to try to incorporate new content into the videos that I DO put out, however often that may be. I want to start sharing my development journey holistically, maybe showing daily progress on the game alongside some updates about what's going on in my life. I feel like I'd like to get to know you all better, and not just share 100% development content. Let me know what you'd all think of a little shift :)
All that being said, enjoy the progress I've made over the past month. A new status effect system and an expandable player buff system should open up new avenues for combat bonuses that NPC relationships can give you, as well as make each run fresh and exciting. I hope y'all enjoy it! See you as soon as possible ;D

Hey, y'all! The Unnamed Indie Game devlog series is back this week with gusto: two new enemies, my pixel art technique, and juicier combat than ever. I had some fun with the editing on this one—hope y'all enjoy, too :)

A note about animating UI with the Unity animator: The way that I've suggested in the video is possibly not the most optimal solution. In short, it updates the UI every frame, which means a hit in performance. A really popular video here (youtube.com/watch?v=Ll3yujn9GVQ) explains it well. However, this may have been patched by the Unity team since that video was published, so it may not even be a concern anymore. (See a comment here: imgur.com/7GnQ3gv.)
If you're up for it, you're probably better off using a tweening library, which avoids updating the UI every frame. Otherwise, I imagine for most hobbyist devs performance isn't really a concern, so the solution I suggested offers a convenient workflow that gives great results quickly. Be warned, though: this might have to be refactored if you run into a performance ceiling. Learning new skills has demanded a lot of me both time-wise and motivation-wise so I appreciate your patience with this devlog :) I've been taking stock of my priorities, and have been trying to make good progress on this game my top priority. So if devlogs are being delayed, trust that I'm spending that energy making this game the best it can be.

I'm counting the days until I can get out of the dungeons and start writing up a small town filled with fun characters. But, an inventory system was one of those things that the dungeons definitely needed before I left them for the time being.

Welcome to the second devlog for my indie game, which is going to be a combination of a farming simulator and a roguelike dungeon crawler. This past week, I took a deep dive into procedural level generation, which was a task and a half.
Thank you for the outpouring of support on the last devlog. It really means so much to me that people are engaging with my game, and I'm excited that people seem to like it! I kicked it up a notch this week with the editing for this devlog, so this is a little later than I would like, but hopefully, it was entertaining. Not sure if I'll be able to keep this style up (it took a loooong time) but let me know what you think of it.
As promised, why circular rooms didn't work for me: "Circles don’t fit well on rectangular screens. So you can only really see a horizontal slice of the room at a time unless the rooms are very small, which isn’t really desirable either. As an extension of this, the rectangular camera bleeds into other rooms very easily, and there’s not a great way to make a rectangular camera bounding box over a circular room with other circles in close proximity. Moreover, perfectly circular rooms just feel a little too pristine for a dungeon, which is interesting because perfect rectangles don’t really. Maybe this is the result of there being a larger cognitive burden on players to assimilate the idea of circular rooms, which are much less common than rectangular rooms, so the circles stand out as foreign."
