24 HOURS WITH GARRY KASPAROV // Episode 13: 13th! Levitov Chess World 2023-10-09 | Everything revolved around the number "13" in Garry Kasparov's fate... He was born on April 13th, became the 13th World Champion in 1985 (8 + 5 = 13), etc. Could there be any chance that the main event of his life was not discussed in the 13th episode of the series "24 Hours With Garry Kasparov"?After his fantastic victory in game sixteen in which Kasparov destroyed Karpov and took the lead in the match, the initiative finally passed to his side. After that, he won game nineteen, after which in the five remaining games it was enough for him to score 2 points. 24 HOURS WITH GARRY KASPAROV // Episode 10: On Why They Interrupted The Unlimited Match Levitov Chess World 2023-08-13 | In his autobiographical book, Kasparov referred to the events surrounding the interruption of his first match with Karpov in February 1985 as "game number forty nine". As you know, it was never took place. FIDE President Campomanes, on the basis of his "right to a final decision on all issues related to the World Championship match", decided to put an end to it - and start a new duel, already limited to 24 games. From a 0-0 score.As is often the case in history, both rivals considered themselves deprived. Karpov complained that two points had been stolen from him, because he led with a score of 5-3 ... Kasparov, who clearly seized the initiative in the match by winning games forty seven and forty eight, was angry that he was deprived of even a theoretical opportunity to build on his success. Doing that after game twenty seven when the score was in favor of the opponent 0-5 -a feat nobody thought possible.The question of why Karpov could not or did not want to continue the match has been debated for almost forty years - and it seems that for the first time Kasparov tried to formulate it in simple and clear words. No, not because he was physically and mentally exhausted, but because he simply did not see how he could score a single last win... The psychological background was hopeless, and the future was unclear. "Probably, Sevastyanov, a close friend of Karpov, and part-time chairman of the U.S.S.R. chess federation, played a key role in resolving the issue of closing the match," according to Kasparov. "As an experienced apparatchik, he believed that the main thing was to solve the main problem: cut the losses here and now, and then figure out how to get out of the situation!"How can one forget the historical words of Sevastyanov to Karpov, at a briefing of the match participants closed to the public after Campomanes announced its end: "Sign, Tolya, this is a good paper!" Or about Karpov's question to Campomanes, which was included in all the transcripts, right on stage: "We agreed on something completely different ...""Karpov was definitely a victim of that situation ... Garry Kasparov experienced this before anyone else in history: on September 10, 1984, he was 21 years, 4 months and 28 days old ... What did he feel at that moment? The answer may be surprising: "Nothing!" A new chapter in his life began. The "unlimited duel" started.The fact that Kasparov would meet with Karpov sooner or later, or, in fact, sooner rather than later, was obvious ... The vertical rise of the chess genius from Baku began a few years before they met on the stage of the Pillar Hall of the House of the Unions. Garry became the World Champion among youngsters and the U.S.S.R. Champion, and as part of the U.S.S.R. national team, the Europe Champion and the winner of the Olympiad began to win by a huge margin all tournaments he played in wherever they were held. Finally, he brilliantly passed through the qualifying cycle of the 1982/83 World Championship: he won the Interzonal tournament and three Candidates Matches - against Beliavsky, Korchnoi and Smyslov. FIDE happened to be one of his opponents along the way...Looking at these victories of Kasparov from a distance of forty years ... they seem to be something taken for granted, but it was not so easy to beat the honored veterans, as the duel with Korchnoi began with a defeat. In the future, Garry had only victories, the chronology of the battle with Smyslov was destined even before the start of the meeting. Things were, however, very different when it came to playing against the World Champion.There was an inexplicable disaster at the start, when Kasparov, having lost 4 of the first 9 games at once, was on the brink of the abyss. A best-of-six match suddenly turned into an equation with two unknown for him β when and how Karpov would win the remaining two games. But time passed, and Garry did not lose. First, he opened the score in the 32nd game, and then seized the initiative, winning the 47th and 48th games - 3-5.And then ... FIDE President Campomanes stopped the 1984/85 match in an unprecedented manner.Kasparov has repeatedly talked in detail about the vicissitudes of meetings with Karpov, but each time his assessments sound new, and immerse the interlocutor in the incredible world in which he lived for five long months. It's one thing to turn the pages of the chess chronicle dryly and quite another to hear about it firsthand. 24 HOURS WITH GARRY KASPAROV // Episode 7: Boris Spasskys Piece of Advice Levitov Chess World 2023-05-19 | In the beginning of the 1980s, time became incredibly "condensed" for Garry Kasparov, and in 1981 and 1982 he overcame the last steps before his long-term rivalry with Anatoly Karpov like a knife through butter passing through the elite!Once upon a time, a 12-year-old Garik met with the World Champion in a simul against the teams of the Palaces of Pioneers, but now the 19-year-old Garry had to meet with him one-on-one at the four-teams tournament. The intrigue did not exclusively take place on the chessboard - these two games became the prologue to the "interesting chess dialogue", but also far beyond it.Then, like any ardent young man flying from victory to victory, Kasparov had to go through the "Petrosian School": he received two heavy defeats in won positions against the ninth World Champion in Moscow and Tilburg.
