In a world full of "goofy ahh," "skibidi," and "Ohio rizz" brainrot, it's only natural to grow tired of TikTok lingo and crave a more refined lexicon to revitalize your silver tongue! With the slang of today leaving much to be desired in the realm of sophistication and potency, one must dive into the history books to study the wonderful words of times past!
When people today imagine how someone from the 18th century spoke, they tend to imagine a sophisticated and fanciful construction of words, all pieced together masterfully like a work of art. However the reason one would be drawn to this conclusion is actually an example of survivorship bias. Because people today tend to only be familiar with the greatest, most influential, and most classic pieces of literature and writings from the 18th century, we tend to come to the conclusion that everyone around that time must have spoken in a similar way to the writings of the American Declaration of Independence or Gulliver's Travels. But if you were willing to sit down and take the time to study the letters and notes from common folk around this time (or words recorded by observers who are, themselves, literate), you'd find a similar frequency of slang and jargon just like we use today!
In this video, I explore what the environment of slang, idioms, and jargon looked like in 18th century England, used by the most wretched and cretinous members of society! And maybe, with a bit of societal effort, we can bring some of these phrases back into the spotlight today!

The pirate life is a fuse that burns fast and bright. Living it grants brothers in arms, unparalleled freedom, and grand adventures. Yet, shackled to these boons are high risks of death, unpredictability, and the relentless pursuit by law and judgment. Due to these downsides, the vast majority of notable pirates ended up either killed at sea or hanged for all to see. As with most criminal professions, the pirates with the best chances of survival were those who kept a low profile and left the life slightly richer after a year or two.
But what if you didn't want to keep a low profile? What if you didn't want to settle for a modest profit? What if you wanted to forever etch your name into the annals of history as the King of the Pirates? For this video, I researched the Golden Age of Piracy to uncover what factored into a pirate's success. What steps would one have to take to not only be successful, not only become a legend, but also find a way out of the life loaded and unscathed?
By studying pirates like Henry Every, Zheng Yi Sao, Bartholomew Roberts, Blackbeard, and others, we can learn from their collective successes and failures to formulate the ultimate "Pirate King Guide."The Worst Pirates Youve Never Heard OfBlueJay2024-03-15 | Play World of Warships here: wo.ws/4aTRziA Thank you World of Warships for sponsoring this video. The concept of the pirate life is one that has fascinated children and adults alike for generations. It's the idea of pure unadulterated freedom, living free from the shackles of responsibility, regulation, and reality. On a lone vessel dancing along the waves of a vast ocean, the world is truly your oyster, and the possibilities are endless! This swashbuckling fantasy has been fueled time and time again by classics like Pirates of the Caribbean in the early 2000s, Treasure Island in the late 1800s, and A General History of the Pyrates in the early 1700s. So considering how impactful the pirate genre has been on the greater populace, it might come as a shock to learn that our understanding of real pirate history is relatively meager. That last listed classic, A General History of the Pyrates by Captain Charles Johnson, remains one of our most primary sources for pirate history during the Golden Age, a novel which we know to have exaggerated and stretched the truth for sensational effect. While unfortunate, it does make sense that accurate recordings of the true history of piracy are scarce given the criminal and elusive nature of pirates themselves. One isn't really an efficient criminal by making their personal information as known as possible. Combine that with the fact that most pirates came from poverty and low social status, and the fact that many primary court documents have been lost to time, it makes sense that this history can be hard to accurately map and result in much speculation. In this video, much speculation must be made to connect the dots we have about Stede Bonnet's life for example. Naturally, this can lead to inaccurate assumptions, so with that in mind I tried my best to choose language carefully when telling this story. Take note of the numerous sentences initiated with, "It's believed" for some insight into when speculations are made.
The illusiveness of pirate history feeds into the fantasy. After all, these were criminals, and if we could go back in time and ask them, we'd find many of them wouldn't choose this way of life if given the choice. The story of piracy is the story of class struggle, with rare exceptions like Bonnet aside, the lowest rungs of society were the ones who populated the pirate ranks. Poor sailors who lost their livelihood, impressment victims seeking freedom, privateers losing their state-backed support, and those with nowhere to turn but the sea were the ones who became pirates. It's a position born out of struggle and poverty, the same struggle that can be seen with the Somali pirates in the modern day. In essence, they are no different than the glorified pirates of the Caribbean: disadvantaged victims of society merely doing what they can to survive.

The Cold War had a very unique origin in that the main adversaries (the United States and the Soviet Union) had just previously been allies in a separate, historically monumental war. Taken at face value, one might hear that sentence and imagine the Cold War took the combatants by surprise, how could friends so quickly become enemies, after all? But the great irony was that not only was the Cold War not a surprise, but both sides knew it was coming. Even when they had been allies. The Cold War was as pure of a war of ideologies as one could get, not a war of armies and weapons, but one of influence and power. The United States sought to align the world with their capitalist economic model while the Soviets put their effort into reinforcing the communist model, this clash of economic ideologies led to a lot of tension, amplified by the fact that if one side was pushed too hard, nukes would follow. That possibility made this war one of the scariest, even though no shots were fired. For as Albert Einstein is often quoted to have said, "I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones."

The study of Egyptian Mythology is the study of the origins of humanity. Scholars estimate the first Egyptian myths came to be somewhere around 3100–2686 B.C, around the same time as the origins of human civilization itself. These myths help historians and anthropologists understand the Egyptians as a people, as through the analysis of the gods and their stories, they shed light on their principles and values. Perhaps the most fascinating part to me about Egyptian Mythology, is that while it existed and was worshipped for over 3,000 years, it remained relatively unchanged throughout that time. One would expect stories being told over multiple millennia to eventually be indistinguishable at the end from what it was in the beginning, but it truly is a testament to the deeply traditional values of the Egyptian people that, while changes were made in the mythos, they weren't as drastic as one would expect. Which makes it even more hilarious when you learn about stories such as Akhenaten's attempt to convert Egypt into a monotheistic civilization through the sole worship of Aten, completely throwing thousands of years of tradition out the window. I hope you enjoy this deep dive and gross simplification of Egyptian Mythology! The Dumbest War Nobody Talks AboutBlueJay2023-08-31 | Feel free to join my Patreon, your support is very much appreciated! patreon.com/bluejayyt

The Lobster War is a classic tale of how a dispute can escalate beyond reason, particularly when the pride of nationalism is put to the test. Originating from a dispute over Spiny Lobster fishing rights, this disagreement highlighted the lack of adequate international agreements on the territorial waters and fishing rights of a nation as the events took place two decades before the signing of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. In the 1960's, French fishing vessels traveled to the Brazilian coast to harvest lobster, igniting an international debate on the legality of this which hinged on the answer to a single question: can a lobster be considered a fish? Brazil argued that because lobster crawl along the ocean floor, they are considered an economic resource apart of their continental shelf. The French, for their part, argued that lobsters "swim" as they hop along the ocean floor, making them essentially a fish that can be caught by any country's vessel. The eventual peaceful resolution of this conflict led to the extension of Brazil's territorial waters to a 200-nautical-mile zone, setting the basis for exclusive economic zones of the same length that would come in the following decades.Barcelonas weirdest obsessionBlueJay2023-07-01 | I, for one, think Catholicism could use significantly more dragons in their lore. The Wild West is one of the most iconic time periods in pop culture, making it ironic that it's also one of the most misunderstood. Hollywood paints it as a time of gunslingers, adventure, and cowboy heroes, but as often is the case, the reality is a bit more lackluster. While it was a rather violent place with high murder rates, this can be misleading as even one murder in a small population size can produce seemingly astronomical murder rates, essentially enhancing outliers in data. The truth is, the "Wild West" was a rather calm and boring time where people were much more focused on getting to the next day than robbing trains or saving damsels in distress. But while the dangers painted by Hollywood and dime novels are often over exaggerated and glamorized, that doesn't mean the region and time period was void of danger! So join me back in time to learn about the real history and dangers of the American Wild West!

The Easter Rising (Rebellion) of 1916 didn't pan out the way the Irish nationalists hoped, but it laid the foundation for an independent Ireland that would come down the road. The poor planning, execution, and communication by the rebels during the rising led to an unconditional surrender only six days later, resulting in the brutal execution of 16 of the rising's leaders. What was planned to be a submitting move by Great Britain actually had the opposite effect, as the controversy of the executions only proved to foster support for Irish independence.
The story is complex, fascinating, and definitely not the kind of thing you can sum up in a 5 minute comedy video. So today we're looking at some of the wackier moments from the Easter Rising of 1916.Absurd Historical Fashion that Needs to Come BackBlueJay2023-01-04 | Download World of Tanks for Free on PC! tanks.ly/3X2eYq3

I thought it would be fitting to make a science video, seeing as how I have a scientific background as a chemical engineer. Radioactive chemistry was one of my favorite topics back in university, so I hope to spread the love of science, physics, and chemistry with this video!
The word "radiation" often will often cause hair to stand on end ever since Oppenheimer and the end of the Cold War, however without it, life as we know it could not exist! While often associated with nuclear weapons and fallout, radiation is much more than the scary disasters we read about in the news. Simply put, radiation is just the transmission of energy through particles or waves through space or material mediums, meaning all the warmth, light, and colors you experience in this beautiful world are a direct result of radiation!
I hope you enjoy this surface level dive into the topic of radiation, but please, if this topic interests you feel free to peruse a handful of the sources I used below:

War, for all of its destructiveness, ironically brings with it big pushes for innovation and creative problem solving. Some famous examples of this include the atomic bomb developed over the course of WWII, or the Trojan Horse from Homer's epic poem, "The Iliad." However, every once in a while an individual with a more zany mind comes up with some rather peculiar plans. In this video, I cover some of the more interesting plans/circumstances that occurred during battles throughout history, including Cambyses II's use of cats and animals during the 'Battle of Pelusium', the world's first "successful" combat submarine, the Confederate-made H.L. Hunley, and the story of some unexpected combatants during the 'Battle of the Bees'.
Thanks to @ArtaxOfficial for letting me use his face.
People often romanticize the Victorian Era as a time of class, aesthetic, and wonder when in reality, you're much better off in the 21st century than you could ever hope to be in the 1800s. From your water to your wallpaper, death lurked around every corner. Public health was such a problem that male tradesmen and laborers of the working class had life expectancies of 25 and 22 respectively. But no worries, if you do ever happen to find yourself in the unfortunate cesspool that is Victorian London, I'm here to teach you all the essentials you'll need to know to survive!
My comment on corsets being dangerous wasn't meant to be a blanket statement for all corset use. While certainly not always dangerous, when the practice was taken to the extremes (aka tight lacing), permanent ribcage and organ deformation could occur (which is the picture I showed in the video). There are skeletons in museums showing the results: rcseng.ac.uk/library-and-publications/library/blog/effects-of-the-corset
I've also been getting a lot of comments on the life expectancies of 25 and 22 being misleading because it includes childhood mortality. It's actually not misleading at all. All I did was a balance of probability. If you are older than the life expectancy of one group, then you would statistically be more likely to be dead at that point in time than you would for the other group with a higher life expectancy. It's basic statistics. Infants are still a part of the equation and you have to account for them because if you were to roll the dice to see if you'd be alive at the age of 26 for example, infant mortalities would affect that outcome.

We've all seen the movies. Two cowboys meet at sundown across the street from one another, hands hovering anxiously above their holsters as a tumbleweed bounces by and a distant flutist plays suspenseful music. Then suddenly, in the blink of an eye, the men draw their cattleman revolvers and fire. But believe it or not, this heavily romanticized Hollywood version of a duel doesn't even come close to competing with how absurd real world duels have been in history! In this video, we'll cover a blunderbuss duel that takes place in the clouds of Paris, a claustrophobic knife fight in a carriage with no means of escape, and a duel between nobles over who's estate had the most birds!

Corrections: - I was wrong about Brits using kilometers. While I knew the UK used the metric system, I did not know how much they mix up units, and apparently they use miles all the time for things like road signs and speedometers. Mentally replace the UK with another European country and the joke will work. - The US flag draped vertically in the background is actually backwards, the stars should be facing to the left. - The pictures of Poland shown at 8:30 are not actually Poland. Google hath failed me. As one commenter pointed out, they are from Norilsk, Russia and the Czech Republic.

While people often think the fads of today are as ridiculous as they come, history has had its fair share of trendy hiccups to give the weirdest styles we've seen a run for their money. From immobilizing skirts to outlandishly extravagant wigs, ornamental hermits to compensating garments, the world of bizarre historical fashion has tales aplenty to keep you entertained for hours. It's quite interesting to look back at what was in vogue in centuries past, wondering how in the world something so ludicrous to us today could ever have been considered fashionable. But hey, who knows, maybe you could try one of these old fashions out at your next gala. Nothing like a little vintage style revival to make yourself the Belle of the ball.

The voyage of the Russian Baltic Fleet (Second Pacific Squadron) in the Russo-Japanese war is a tale of ridiculous blunder after blunder, a disaster from start to finish. The last ditch effort for Russian naval superiority in the Russo-Japanese war required a voyage never before taken by a coal-powered fleet. To help matters, the fleet was crewed by conscripted peasants who had little to no experience or education when it came to naval operation. Over the 18,000 mile journey, the fleet attacked civilian vessels from multiple global powers, shot at their own ships, killed fellow sailors with negligence of safety standards, destroyed city's communication grids, and so much more. This event will go down in history as one of Russia's most embarrassing military performances, but on the bright side, at least it gives you one fantastic hard-to-believe story to tell at your next dinner party!
