Traditional Chinese Peasants Stool 四腿八叉 John Zhu 2020-11-25 | I made 4 stools to furnish our kitchen. I decided to use the traditional Chinese peasant's stool as the model for my chairs. This style is called "4 leg 8 splay" (四腿八叉), it is always found among the poor; if you pay any attention to Chinese culture you'll notice this style of stool is not used by the aristocratic or the ruling class or the wealthy class. It is truly an utilitarian peasant's stool. The 四腿八叉 chair is extremely strong and durable, lasting for generations. So it shouldn't be surprising that those with little means would want the highest value for their hard earned silver.These chairs are made from store bought yellow pine and mahogany. I didn't want to get into the details of how to make one of these 四腿八叉 "4 leg 8 splay" stools in this video. Perhaps in the future, God willing, I will make an instructional video. How to Make a Router Plane Made From a Block Plane John Zhu 2020-10-28 | I wanted to make a smaller router plane to go with my Stanley #71 1/2. I wanted my smaller router plane to be made from metal. I had an old block plane that I bought for ~$5 when I first started to do woodworking. And I used this block plane as the starting of my new smaller metal router plane. I used a threaded rod connector to form the height adjuster knob of the router plane. I cut a rod connector to an eight degree angle for attaching the handles. The handles of my small router plane are made from walnut. The base is made from a piece of oak . The height adjuster knob and blade collar of my small router plane is shaped from a solid block of aluminum.The major problem that I ran into while making my small router plane is having the blade glide up and down smoothly. The blade glides down easily, but when coming back up, the blade would get "pinched." To solve this problem, I added a guide plate on the side of the router plane to.I demonstrate the usefulness of my design near at the end of the video. Inflatable Sander Replacement John Zhu 2017-05-01 | In this video I show you how to make a simple inflatable sander replacement. Inflatable sanders are really expensive, and the replacement sleeves are outrageously expensive. The expense would be justified if inflatable sanders were reliable, but they are notorious for leaking air. If you want to sand concave surfaces there aren't any commercially available alternatives. So I decided to make one from some scrap wood, a 1/4" bolt, and some adhesive velcro. DIY13The total cost is probably less than $1, but $1 is a nice and round number. Continuous Uniform Grain Drawer Front John Zhu 2017-03-04 | I wanted to make a continuous and uniform grain drawer front for my portable workbench. I cut out the rectangular walnut drawer front and framed it with red oak. Then fitted the drawer back into the bench front to maintain the uniform and continuous look. Typically, a continuous and uniform grain drawer is done by slicing the front apart and gluing the piece back together minus the drawer pieces. This method leaves the grain of the frame ~1/8" off, so if one looked at the frame one can see the mismatched grain.The method I decide to try, leaves the frame grain intact, and whatever space is lost to the kerf is replaced a secondary frame. Dual Mortise & Tenon a Waste of Time in the Modern World? John Zhu 2017-02-28 | Joinery was developed for functional reasons, and one functional consideration is the movement of wood due to seasonal humidity change. The form of joinery is a secondary effect. The modern air conditioned world keeps indoor humidity relatively low and constant. One of the reason to use double (or multiple) tenons is to reduce the cupping of wood as humidity level changes; so is multi-tenons obsolete? Or does the aesthetic nature of the joint still warrants its use? Dual Mortise and Tenon by Hand + Asian vs Western Mortice Making John Zhu 2017-02-26 | I demonstrate how I cut a dual mortise and tenon joint for a portable workbench that I have built. There are 3 sets of dual mortice and tenon joints in the workbench; I am showing you how I cut one set of mortise and tenon using only hand tools. Typically mortise is cut first followed by the tenon. In this this I cut the tenon first, albeit over sized. Once I chopped the mortise I then trim the tenon to fit, basically a mortise first method.In addition to cutting dual mortise and tenons, I show you how the Asian woodworker typically cuts a mortise and how he is different from his Western counter part. Leather Cover for Chisels John Zhu 2017-01-31 | This is the easiest and cheapest way to make leather covers for your chisel that is a good long term solution. I can think of easier and cheaper ways like wrapping a piece of leather with tape, but I think that is a bad solution.The most difficult part is using the rightI wanted to do a project that let's woodworkers dip their toe in the world of leather. This was literally the simplest project involving leather. I have use leather chisel covers like these for years and are very satisfied with them. This design has be thoroughly tested. $2 Pop Up Bench Dogs - Quick Easy Simple Cheap John Zhu 2017-01-14 | I was looking at Lee Valley and saw the Veritas Prairie bench dogs. I really liked the concept of their workbench dogs, but I really don't have the money to indulge in such luxuries. If you can afford the Veritas Prairie workbench dogs I suggest skipping this video, since these practically the same thing for ~%10 the cost of Prairie dogs. I made these bench dogs using store bought material. The single push latch was from Home Depot in the cabinet hardware section; the cost was $1.98 at the time of this video. Still I am sure you can find it cheaper elsewhere.The dowel is oak that I already had from a different project. I hope you enjoy these pop up bench dogs. They were easy, simple, and cheap, great bang for the buck. 1 hr Shapening Stone Holder - Friday Night Quick Project 1 John Zhu 2016-09-10 | This sharpening stone holder takes about 1 hour to complete, it uses mostly scrap material. Yet another reason to recycle that sliver.I made this sharpening stone holder in ~2hrs, this includes filming time. So anyone should be able to make something similar in less than 1 hour. It used material that were leftovers from other projects. Once you've accumulated enough scrap, you can probably make this.This sharpening stone holder is designed to hold my DMT diamond sharpening stone and two spyderco ceramic sharpening stones. How to Make Leather Shoes - Ballet Flats John Zhu 2016-08-05 | I made this pair of leather shoes for my wife in the style of ballet flats, impart based on the Persian slippers that are found holding tobacco at the residence of Sherlock Holmes. The upper is made from kip leather with sheep leather piping; the liner is made from goat skin; the mid- and out-soles are made from 10 and 16 oz cow hide leather, respectively. All the leather for these shoes (except the sheep leather piping) are vegetable tanned leather. Project 23.Pattern for women’s size 7.5-8 (delayed indefinitely) I am about half way finished digitizing the pattern. The pattern was made from my wife’s foot, so feel free to use it but I suspect you’ll need to make some adjustment to make it fit perfectly for your feet. I plan to do videos on how to draft a pattern based my foot, look for those videos in the future.Vegetable tanned leather are more stiff than the common chrome tanned leather; but veggie tanned leather conforms to the wearer’s body much better than chrome tanned leather.This pair of leather shoes is version 2.0 of a design that I had originally made in 2011. The prototype ballet flats where black w/o any piping. My wife really enjoyed wearing the prototype, in fact, she wore them so much that she wore a hole in them. So instead of fixing it I decided to make her a new pair, and fix some of the problems with the prototype. I hope to do more leather shoe videos; I think it is an interesting subject. Improved Workbench for Woodworking - Workbench 3.0 John Zhu 2016-06-20 | Workbench 3.0. The workbench I use for woodworking has been remade twice. This time I tare the workbench a part to make some improvements. For example, I install a new vise, increase the mass of the workbench, moved the tool-well to the back corner of the workbench so it would be out of the way, and I make and install some drawers for storage. The workbench is on the smaller side about 5' long, but it works well for the types of project I like to do.Workbench 2.0 video: youtu.be/-B-P_NwuQacIn the previous iteration of this woodworking workbench (workbench 2.0) I installed legs and skirting. Workbench 2.0 served me well, for I decided to get a bigger vise, so I took the opportunity to upgrade the workbench to version 3.0. After 2 months of using workbench 3.0 I am please, but there are some improvements I'd like to make or test new devices to see if I like them. I am using the old (smaller) vise to make a portable workbench that I can use at craft fairs, farmers' markets, and just as a secondary bench. I plan to make the portable workbench from pine, walnut, oak, and beech.
